Blue Origin: For Earth’s Sake

Jeff Bezos has a presentation on the future of space exploration. Much of it is very inspiring. He is a highly motivated individual with a vision. Exciting vision.

Okay, landing on the moon by 2024 suddenly seems pretty dang plausible.

Move over SpaceX, you’re about to have some serious competition!

Friendly competition! They are targeting different market segments. I’m fascinated watching how “commercial space” is shaking out — each effort has its own niche and we’re getting a regular cornucopia of infrastructure out of it.

Finally, somebody who thinks O’Neill colonies are a good idea (although they will always be “dependent”, unless they shepherd a water-bearing asteroid or comet to their industrial docks).

Reminds me a bit of the short story “I’ll Build Your Dream Castle” by Jack Vance, though that’s a more fantastical treatment of the idea (with a strong libertarian message).

He has got to be the worst motivational speaker that ever lived. I went through 20 minutes, skipping ahead a few times. Does he ever say anything even vaguely interesting? I listened to about 20 minutes, skipping ahead a couple of times, there’s no way I can sit through a full hour of that.

Wow, you’re not kidding. Low-energy Jeb! But leaving aside the pacing issue, yes, it did eventually get interesting. He talked about big future stuff like O’Neill space colonies, and then described Blue Origin’s plans to go to the moon and the vehicles they’re building.
