I believe we call this a colloquialism?

English is not really a hard language, but our ability to speak it properly is apparently hard due to poor education and the fact that everyone around us uses this language improperly.

Lets take for instance this great one from years and years and years which is used improperly.

“Near miss”
We use it as saying X objects narrowly avoided collision. The reality of the language is that they didn’t miss. They Nearly Missed. AKA, HIT.

I am regurgitating George Carlin here on this, but Carlin used language very carefully and liked to point things like this out how we used language poorly and improperly to describe things.

If the objects didn’t hit each other, that would be a near hit.

Scott, i like these. If I can figure out how to use my laptop camera, I may try some.
Thought mine would have some of the accoutrements of Steve Green. though brown not clear.

It does make one wonder if Newsreaders should ever go off script. He clearly thought he was making a good quip. As Patrick notes, better to survive a bad thing than not to survive.

But awareness level 0.
