I heard a fascinating take on Communism/Socialism a while back but unfortunately I can’t remember who said it (apologies if it was on BW!), nor the exact words, but the gist of it was this: Communism is the attempt to structure society as if it were a family.
The Communist motto: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”. It is literally the way a family operates: The parents have the ability, the children have the needs.
It’s an appealing vision to those who are not yet adults (which includes many college undergrads, of course): a vision that holds out the prospect of eternal happiness, love and security. Implementation has been problematic …

It’s partially true, but it’s also this concept of Forbidden Knowledge. Communism loves wearing the label of a Revolutionary, and people want to believe to be part of the “Smart ones” the “Men of Action” who know what’s really going on.
