Took many a train trip as a kid, in the 50’s in Detroit, going to the Grandparents in east Kentucky (coal country). These were always on old steam engines. Today I would much more appreciate this, back then I always wanted to be able to ride on one of the new diesel engined one. It wasn’t quite the trip you enjoyed. Lots of stops a number of layovers in old drafty train stations. Glad I had the experience though.

I guess you are fortunate. One of my most memorable life experiences was taking a ride, in the locomotive, the last steam locomotive on scheuled runs in the country. It was on Danville & Western, AKA, the Dick & Willie. I was 5, and rode from Martinsville to Bassett, Va.

Why not market AmTrak on a cruise model? I was an OTR truck driver, and in all of my years driving, I never got tired watching this beatiful country go by. Seriously, complete with tourist stops, activites, fine dining… Yeah, it could work.

Bill, I am not so far gone as MGTOW, but I am, by choice, a hermit. I am single now, for the last time. I have given up on dating, but not for the lack of trying. As it turns out, even in my age group, the dating pool is overwhelmingly, left-wing feminist. I am nearly 64. My theory is that most conservative women are and have been, happily married. After 2 experiences that challenged my sanity, one of whom almost put me jail, I gave up. Yes Bill, even here in the deep south, it really is that bad.

Went from Chicago to Glacier National Park by train.
The Glacier station is about 100 yards from the lodge.
Rented a big room on the train. Slept like a log.
Train travel is unique because, unlike the freeway or airplanes, the tracks go through America’s back yard. Wonderful way to see the country.
