Political Science associate professor Eitan Hersh — author of the new book “Politics is for Power” — says college educated Democrats who read, talk and think about politics, but don’t get involved in any face-to-face local political action, are ruining politics. Branding them “political hobbyists,” Hersh says what they do is to politics as watching SportsCenter is to playing football. Does this Tufts University academic have a point when it comes to conservatives too?

I came away with an entirely different take on this article based on Scott’s description. It sounded to me more like an indictment of the academic elites who hold their opinions above those who actually get out and get their hands dirty doing the grassroots work of politics. Indeed, that seems consistent looking at their attitude vis-a-vis almost any field of endeavor. Those who wear overalls and get their hands doing useful work of any kind are always looked down upon with contempt from the lofty heights of academia.
That being said, Bill had it right. However anyone might disagree, they vote and that vote counts. I may not be able to take part in my teams choice for next season’s quarter back, but having an political opinion that sways other voters by simply dialogue is not even in the same realm of comparison.
Scott, the notion that white, college-educated, liberal Democrats don’t have any unmet needs is laughable. Whether they admit it or not, every Democrat’s unmet need is to control other people’s lives and tell them what to do at the federal, state and local level, essentially destroying their pursuit of happiness. Uh, what Bill said.
Bill, the people sent to Congress are not doing what their constituent “hope” they will do, they are doing EXACTLY what the will of the people want them to do! That’s what a self-governing nation is all about and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This nation will either live or die by the people’s own hand at the ballot box! Even the Bible says they are without excuse!
A Gallop poll today said “Trump Third Year Sets New Standard for Party Polarization.” The media slants this like it’s a bad thing! That’s because global elitist’s and this armchair politician’s idea of Bush’s “Big Tent” philosophy would be for God and Satan to share power equally. They’re probably rubbing their hands with excitement by the inevitable, indubitable result.
Brilliant!!
Great one guys
And BTW – it seems to me that this guy is already preparing the excuse for the 2020 result
Then he will be able to say – I told you so…
His observation is correct in the context of ham and eggs: the chicken is involved, but the pig is committed. That observation is true if you are discriminating between serious political activism versus political entertainment. But most people have real lives and don’t want to make politics the center of their daily lives; it’s more something you have to endure when the news is on or at the Thanksgiving table. But I object to his using the word “white.” What does their being white have to do with it? The Left, which says that we should all be equal, spends a disproportionate amount of time pointing out people’s race instead of focusing on the real issue, presumably because it fans passions. “Educated white Democrats” is a racially discriminating statement. None of our political issues have anything to do with race, unlike what the Left would have you believe. The differences are cultural, not racial. The difference here is the culture of the educated academia versus the culture of activists. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with who you choose to hang with. Beyond certain physical traits (e.g., blacks having a higher risk of developing sickle cell anemia, etc.) that are based on science, “race” has no place in politics at all. But Progressives can’t leave it out. Just count how many times they mention race in their commentary.
What I want out of politics is someone who aggressively and forcefully leaves me alone, leaves my neighbor alone, and makes sure outside third parties leave both of us alone.
I’m in violent agreement with your statement!
The problem with most political theories is that they are much better in theory than in practice. This is fundamentally because the theory is derived from how the theorist wants/wishes/feel things should be rather than what they actually are and can be.
Then when things turnout to be what they don’t want, it is the things that are held to be the problem rather than the theorist’s wants, wishes, and whims. So the obvious conclusion that the things, who are living, breathing, productive human beings, must be FORCED to be what he wants and all will be well. In almost every case, the things become much much worse.
Meanwhile, back at the ivory tower, the political theorist avoids doing anything of value for any living being and produces still more political theories without a hint of any direct contact with reality. Heaven forbid that he would get his hands dirty and invest a bit of sweat equity into actually earning his living. No! He demands that others involuntarily pay for is parasitical existence and complains he is not being given enough.
