Ok, so I recently heard this term “Latinx” for the first time a few days ago and now I just got an email from my local community college welcoming me to join the local “Latinx Student Association.” I’m assuming that this is some effort by the gods of political correctness to avoid using the gendered references of Latino or Latina.
So I have a question. If it’s now deemed obligatory to refer to people from Latin America as Latinx, does that mean that I am also equally obliged to now refer to people from China as Chinx?
Oh right, they’re not part of the inter-sectional coalition, so the concerns of Chinese people probably aren’t considered valid by them anyway.

I think too the X is part of the intersectionality olympics and trying to non-gender a noun normally gendered in the language of the people it refers too.
I’ve also read a few people complaining that lumping all spanish speakers and decendants together like that is very offensive. Cubans do not see themselves as Mexicans, and the Costa Ricans aren’t Venezuelans, but these “well meaning, north american whites” not able to see them as different and thinking of them the same, claiming they should all have the same interests and identity just shows how bigoted and blinded they are. At least that’s my paraphrase.
It’s a total invention that proves how completely out of touch activists are with the people they claim to champion.
Short story: no one who speaks Spanish natively could ever have thought the term would catch on. “X” is a very English sound.

If I recall correctly, the letter X is pronounced in Spanish in two syllables like “ec-ey.” So that would sound like “la-tin-ec-ey.”
