Did Trump Advisor’s Anti-China Bias Squelch Prophetic Pandemic Memos?

President Trump’s Trade Advisor, Peter Navarro, sent a memo on January 29 which seems prophetic about the COVID-19 pandemic, in hindsight. He sent another on February 23, but it’s not clear if the president saw either one, because West Wingers marginalized Navarro for his anti-China bias. Can we trust any of these people to set aside their craven ambition and turf wars to protect our health and lives?

I agree with you Bill about the issue with China. I was reading a commentary in my local paper yesterday that pointed out a scary situation. That more than half of our drugs, that’s pharmaceutical drugs come from China. What if China were to decide to withhold those drugs from the United States. China is putting themselves in a position of being able to dictate to the world like they dictate to their own people. We need to start producing more and more of our own pharmaceuticals as well as our own products. This way we can stay independent more.

Why should it surprise us that people in an administration in this country are constantly jockeying for position and advancing their own pet ideas? That process is the essence of living in a democratic republic where all ideas are welcome and expected to be put to the test of exhaustive discussion. Otherwise we could run things as they do in China or Russia or Venezuela or . . .and have edicts come down from the dictator. It shouldn’t amaze us that the members of the Cabinet, etc. are aggressive in promoting their own “hobby horses”. It is such people who are driven by ambition or have made such a mark in the culture already that the President appoints them to these positions. It is one of our greatest strengths in my opinion.
