The fantasy;
“Socialism is an economic system where everyone in society equally owns the factors of production.”
The reality;
When applied in practice, “everyone in society equally owning the factors of production” means “the state owns the means of production”, including the people.
When the state says, “work the fields”, the people work the fields, when the state says, “work the mines”, the people work the mines …
Under socialism, the people exist to serve the will and convenience of the state.
… or am I wrong?
… and is the west really a ‘moral’ arrangement – or are we just x% slave as the state takes x% of our earnings?

Well, technically we are all slaves to survival, in some manner. Unless we cast off the yolk of this World, move out of our self imposed incarceration (Human Zoo) and trust in the providence of He Who Is to provide for us, both body and soul.
You are correct. The simple one-word definition of socialism is indeed slavery.
