This week, Nancy Pelosi went to a hair salon and got a haircut. In San Francisco. Where salons have been closed due to the pandemic. And she wasn’t even wearing a mask!
I’ve seen a lot of people covering this story and a lot of different takes on it. Pelosi’s take is that the salon owner “set her up,” or that she was unaware of the law. Tim Pool’s take is that she’s out of touch with her district because she’s unaware of the law. Everyone else seems to be taking it as “rules for thee, none for me.”
I think this is missing the point. This story is a scandal, in my opinion, because Nancy Pelosi accidentally told the truth.
Let’s suppose for a second that instead of covid-19, there’s some sort of Outbreak-style airborne Ebola virus, and to walk outside without a moon suit is as good as suicide. So, basically, what CNN and MSNBC and Pelosi have been saying for months. She wouldn’t have cared whether she was legally allowed to get a haircut sans-mask or not, she still wouldn’t have done it. She wouldn’t be using her privilege as a famous and powerful politician to endanger herself.
She’d only have done that if the virus were nowhere near as dangerous as she’s been saying it is, and the masks and lockdowns are essentially the medical equivalent of TSA security theater.
Basically, what we all know to be the case but no one is allowed to admit publicly. She admitted it publicly, by even being willing to get a haircut, politician-privilege or not. That action, even if it were legal for her to do, is a tacit admission that the rules aren’t for safety, it’s perfectly safe to get a haircut, you’re just not allowed to. By letting the literal mask slip, she let the metaphorical mask slip: she knows that this is BS as much as the rest of us do.
Maybe she’s wrong and it’s actually deadly, but that doesn’t matter: wrong or right, she’s demonstrably been saying things she doesn’t actually believe. And I think that’s why this story has legs.

This is the same kind of idea that “go protest, the cause is worth it” also seemed to ignore. Are you going to get sick? Are politicians telling people to engage in a suicide charge against a well defended position because the bunker must be taken? Most people seemed to take it as “go out, you won’t get sick” but since we can’t vote in person anymore or go much of any other place, it certainly is telling what we may not due contrasted with what they can.
That is a good point Ross! The NYT published an article that basically said that up to 90% of all Covid testing that shows positive results are really useless findings. This is due to iterative testing in an individual sample until the DNA of the virus is found. That is usually at the 35th to 40th cycle. Science says that anything after 30 cycles is meaningless. Blow my mind!
Normally in any disaster, our leaders are trying to calm people down and downplay the problem to prevent panic. The risk is that they’ll downplay it too much and cost lives. With this virus, from the very beginning, the governments of the US have been doing the opposite, trying to foment panic where none would otherwise exist. Pelosi’s actions here show that she doesn’t believe it should exist, but that she’s been creating it for her own ends.
