Bill and Steve and Scott, I do have to take issue with NO early voting. We, my wife and I, were having to go out of the county for a period of time, possibly over Nov. 3rd. We voted, in person, with IDs at the polling location on our way out of the county. While I do understand and echo your concern with willy/nilly here’s a ballot, fill it out and return it, early voting does have it’s place. With that in mind, a national requirement for ID of some sort, is not “voter suppression” no more than having to have my DL on my person when I drive my auto is driver suppression

I should have been clearer on this comment, we, my wife and I do live in the great state of Texas. I guess we could have requested absentee ballots, but it was a unplanned trip, It happened when the polling places in our county in Texas were opened, so why not take a few minutes to vote. I also don’t have a problem with dipping my thumb in a jar of ink to show that I have already voted. Although, it might be better to use a different finger, one closer to the middle.
Absentee ballots are the way to handle a situation like yours. There’s no good reason to allow just anyone at all to vote early or by mail. Perhaps an in-person option could be added just for absentee ballots – I don’t know whether or not there would be enough demand to justify it, but it surely can’t be a huge effort or expense to implement.
