Welcome to 2021

Well, here we are, out of 2020 at last.

Happy New Year everyone, I hope each and every one of you have a better year than last year, but forgive me if I’m not overly optimistic. I don’t think I’ve ever hoped for more from, and expected less from, a year than 2021.

You might like to take a look at the pre-recorded New Year’s Eve fireworks/light show for London. It rather nicely demonstrates the merging of popular culture and propoganda that is becoming pervasive over here.

It was going very nicely I thought, with some nods to the NHS and the current health situation, even a laugh about being on mute in zoom. That was when suddenly the fists rose in the blackened sky, and even my own mother said that she wasn’t happy about the use of that particular symbol.
Happy new global racist climate year.

Oh, for me it started earlier, the lines about old habits becoming extinct to make way for the new and hiding away. Very much a common theme these days. In the PRC or Iran this would be good. In a country with an ancient tradition of liberty I find it sinister.

The elevation of the NHS to a status beyond criticism is increasingly worrying too. It was bad enough before Covid-19(84) when “debate” on the NHS was effectivley a bidding war where the options were give it more money, give it a lot more money or give it a s*** load more money. That’s now moving toward just give it the whole damn GDP and it can give us back what it doesn’t use.

The whole show had a distinctly Beijing flavour, maybe next year they could add a show with thousands of people performing synchronised crowd art…
