The play Gas Light (1938) by English playwright Patrick Hamilton (1904 – 1962) is the origin of the term “gaslighting,” something we are all familiar with by now, which is a form of psychological abuse. The play was later adapted into a film in 1944 with Ingrid Bergman, Angela Lansbury and Charles Boyer. I frequently hear people refer to the 1944 film as the origin of the term, but I believe credit should go to Patrick Hamilton.
