I’m 99% sure that yes, I am based. I know I’m definitely not debased.
Judging by the craven, cowardly, virtue-signaling supplication that half of the conservative movement has offered to the communists this week, I don’t think I want to associate myself with the term “conservative” anymore, either. It has been drained of meaning since January 6th.
What are you? Are you based?

I’ve read Briggs’ work.
It is writing like that that makes me happy that printing out a hard copy is an option.
And the fact that I pretty much stopped buying notebooks in 1982 (I like using Diaries) when I realized that the college I was going to provided me with reams and reams of pages with notifications that did not apply to me and blank other sides I could write a header on and a page number to use to record all lecture notes.
I saw a lot of clever words of minute (but not nonexistent, it is only fair to admit) significance that I would never waste paper and ink cartridge on.
There is also BS, Pure BS, and the musing of Statisticians.
Well, I can honestly say that I disagree with Briggs’ assertion that
I suppose that that makes me debased from his perspective. Or perhaps that was a typographical error given the rest of his discussion and word associations.
I wonder if all the commenters actually read the info. in the link? Either they didn’t or I think I understand the point of it and absolutely do not. ???
I have no problem labeling myself as a conservative because that is what I am. The left doesn’t get to own that term any more than heterosexuals get to own gay. How many more words are you going to run from and how is doing so a virtue?
What I consider truly loathsome is not the label of being conservative, but passive aggression used to bolster one’s importance.
Did you bother to read what pops up when you click the link?
Well said!
Briggs is always an interesting read. I’m about mid-way between the middle and far right on the based continuum.
I don’t like being called Conservative, either. Conservatives I have voted for have thus far made little effort to conserve anything!
If you want to call me anything, call me a Constitutionalist.
I am Conservative in outlook, and that outlook includes but is not limited to politics and policy.
I dislike how many people did not learn to memorize multiplication and addition tables, or learn the difference between cursive and block writing.
I dislike how so many of our reference books are online and not on our bookshelves. There’s no changing the meanings of the words in the College Dictionary, last updated in 1966, on my brother’s bookshelf or Mom’s 1943 New School And Office Dictionary.
I dislike how likely it is for people to not know that the Slide Rule was invented by Reverend William Oughtred in 1622 to help him more quickly calculate Logarithms – or the importance of the fact that Oughtred knew how to calculate Logarithms without the Slide Rule.
I also dislike that I have watched engineers draw out blueprints by hand and guided by a complex array of strings and have to wonder if today’s engineers could draw a blueprint without the AutoCAD.
So new words like “Base” do not impress me as much as the inventors of them want me to be impressed.
I’d not heard of ‘based’ before. But it makes sense. Might see a few more unpaired words as this goes along.
I have no idea what you mean by “Are you based?” What is that, some kind of pajama-boy terminology? New Age psychobabble? It sounds like a crock to me.
There are a whole lot of conservatives dismayed, concerned and involved in actively moving to correct the current crisis. If you don’t want to be one of us, don’t let the portal impact your posterior as you accomplish your egress.
Seriously, this is a bullshit post and I mean that most sincerely. I’ve been a conservative all my life, long before anyone ever heard of Neo-Cons or those nut jobs at Q-Anon. I served in the Marine Corps and I’ve been battling leftism with everything I can muster for decades. I tell you most sincerely — If you’re not with us you’re against us and we don’t want you.
You’re not better, more patriotic, more in the know or more deeply concerned than any of the rest of us. You’re not “more based” whatever-the-f*ck-that-is or more anything than the rest of us, especially here on this site. You’ve got a lot of balls talking down to your betters and peers, a lot of nerve posting trash like this on this site … Get over yourself, you’re just not that special. Stop living out a movie in your own mind with you cast as the hero. The adults have serious work to do.
If you want to hang out with real conservatives, start by not associating yourself with a ComBloc piece of junk weapon and get back to us. Only teenage boys whose gonads haven’t dropped, people whose instruction is gleaned from movies and cherry dipsticks that listen to Viet Nam era REMFs think the Automat Kalashnikov is anything they’d tie their name to. I don’t care if your initials are “AK” and you’re “47”, the inference is unmistakable.
Yeah, you offended the hell out of me, maybe you noticed?
Semper fi, sh!tbird.
I thought he mistyped and mean “biased”.
“Based”?
That term reminds me too much of Freebasing.
Freebasing was for Richard Pryor, before he got burned by it.
I also initially read it as a misspelling of biased, but further inspection corrected my error.
Regardless, I refuse to accept the theft of language. I have never ascribed to political correctness, and I will not relinquish my definition of “conservative” or many other words the radicals of the world misuse and rebrand.
For example, a rainbow remains a symbol of divine covenant to me regardless of the abuse it takes from the rear-enders and their apologists.
So, in spite of ACTS‘s over-the-top rant, he got at least one thing right: the linked essay was nothing but “some kind of pajama-boy terminology” or “[n]ew Age psychobabble” because it relinquishes the battle field of language to those who would subvert our culture and society.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow your roll. Did you bother to follow the link? Your spleen-venting rant suggests that you did not. If you had, you would probably have aimed before firing.
In deference to Bill, since this establishment belongs to him and not to me, I’m going to restrain my urge to unleash my sailor mouth in retaliation to your broadside. Instead I’m going to present you a quick pull quote from the piece you didn’t bother to consider:
Don’t think for one minute that I hold myself out as superior to anybody who’s a longtime member here, nor that I’m insulting you or any other patriot. I’m a plankowner here, Gyrene, and I’m also a veteran … but neither of those facts render my opinion more trustworthy than anyone else’s. That applies to your opinions too, in case you’re still too outrageously outraged to catch my drift.
I loathe communists, progressives, socialists, and Democrats (but I repeat myself). Hell, my fondness for smack-talking them got all my Twitter accounts banned. Relatives of mine were swallowed up by Stalin’s gulag, and my parents and grandparents fled to America as refugees after WWII because they weren’t interested in a permanent vacation at Vorkuta. I joined up because I treasure the Constitution and this country, and I regard the oath we swore as a deadly serious matter.
Now I’m going to continue to render you the respect you failed to offer me as a fellow human being and a fellow patriot — unless you choose to rage at me again without first considering what I actually typed, and what the linked post actually says.
To quote Instapundit, RTWT.
PS — All my AKs are long gone, since a tragic canoe capsizing incident a few years ago over a deep part of the Great Lakes. I’m very broken up about it.
“based” is one flag I feel the need to see up the flagpole for a while to see how many people and who and for what reason they salute it.
Maybe it’s kosher, maybe it isn’t. I don’t and can’t trust the editors of dictionaries as much as I used to. And I cannot and do not completely and implicitly trust professional categorizers of human beings like William Briggs to not be just trying to stay relevant that way Scott Adams is desperate to do so.
