Conservative Sticker/Icon

After listening to Bill’s podcast about Terms of Service this morning I was reminded of several times when an icon or patch or sticker has been applied to signal to each other “I support BLM” or “I support gay marriage”. Various causes at various times have seen twitter, facebook, websites, even physical places of business sport some small symbol to state compliance with (or at least fear of) one cause or another.

I was never very happy about it, and still do not know how I feel about this, but would be quite fascinated if there was some symbol (not unlike the American Flag, or the don’t-tread-on-me, or Gonzales TX “come and take it”) that would be subtle but recognizable so that conservative establishments could signal their “Terms of Service”.

Things I’ve seen on businesses and cars that tell me they’re very likely a Conservative:

  • Gadsden Flag
  • Gadsden rattlesnake or wording
  • Military branch (especially the Marines) sticker
  • NRA member sticker
  • Marine Spartan helmet
  • Army Punisher skull
  • Any kind of firearm sticker
  • Yellow “Support Our Troops” ribbon
  • Blue “Support Our Police” ribbon
  • Thin blue/red line flag
  • Any American flag or flag overlay
  • Any kind of Trump sticker
  • Any veteran support or veteran-owned info
  • Any kind of classic US motto (E Pluribis Unum, In God We Trust, Proud to be an American)
  • “Molon Labe”

I don’t have any suggestions on this but I’d be interested in hearing or seeing some too. I will remind you that lots of organizations have long used various symbols to signal their sympathies and allegiances.

I.E. the Christians (of which I am one) have used the simple symbol of a line drawn fish (the “Ichthys”) for nearly 2,000 years and it still carries the same connotation that it did originally.

I’m not saying we should use the Ichthys, not every conservative is a Christian and not every Christian is conservative. This is OK, I don’t care and am just as happy to have atheists and Muslims voting conservative. But the power of a symbol is inarguable.

That might be an idea, or something along those lines. That’s nicely concise, easily understood and irrefutable by the logic of mathematics.

First thing I thought of was the date 1984 with a circle with a line through it. But I think I like yours better.

From a design standpoint, it is too busy. Icons/logos need to be very simple so they work at many sizes and near and far distances.
Maybe blocky numbers on a very simple background? Or perhaps a black background and number as if handwritten with chalk, blackboard style? hmmm…

Yea,I didn’t like the light USA map, but it was one I had. It’s what you get in 3 minutes. But I think it has merit. Might have something tomorrow. Asian clients awake now.

We need more than my input, surely. But, I wouldn’t underline the 4. I would go with understated. If we were going for emphasis we should just borrow the scene from Star Trek TNG (“There are FOUR lights”). I like the math better because it is sort of “duh”, and the 1984 reference is great. I believe it got some use in communist controlled Poland as well, but someone should check me on that.

in thinking about it last night, underlines in mathematics actually has a meaning. So it wouldn’t be appropriate. K.I.S.S. is always a good starting point.
