To me, given the distance and time involved, manned flights to Mars necessarily must involve a community rather than a few. There’s a reason punishment in prison is being put in solitary confinement. No matter how strong the will, the mind cannot take it long enough to have sane people land all the way to Mars. The risk, of course, of something going wrong escalates when more folks are involved. So there’s that.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Artemis is basically the cancelled Constellation program renamed and resurrected. It’s Shuttle-era technology revived, about 35-40 years old. SpaceX can (and should) do everything Artemis might be able to do, cheaper and better. NASA should be contracting transportation services, not trying to compete with private industry.

I remember Walter Cronkite in particular being way beyond supportive of NASA back in the day. Kinda lost some credibility there, but he was portraying the “riding high” vibe of the time. When JFK pronounced putting men on the moon “before the deck-ade is out” in his inaugural address in 1960 and then NASA had the stones to make it happen, hey, it was a good time to be an astronaut and a flight engineer.
Leaks in Artemis? After the Challenger catastrophe in 1986? AYKM? Heads ought to be rolling in NASA with that one. But I fear that the NASA + Deep State Protective Society will bulldoze their way past that one.
Where is Congress with this? You know, the guys & gals who write the checks? Oh, sorry, I forgot. They’re primping before the camera and they’re on vacation worrying about their next election.
Got it.
NASA – you’ve got it made. You’ve got charlatans (Congress) funding your stupidity.
