Tom Skerrit getting killed was one of the brilliance of that film. When he died, the tension skyrocketed cause no-one was safe.
Bill, the shark never worked.
A DeSantis primer:
Italian rules: Day-SAHN-tees
American rules of adjusted European languages: Deuh (as in good or book)-SAN (like San Francisco)-tiss (rhymes with hiss)
Californian rules (all vowels are schwas, no stressed syllables): Duh-San-Tuss (Californians understand San, so they can say it)
NPR Rock Throwers (Pretending to be Europeans, just not quite): Dee-San-Tees
Trump: Dee-sank-tee-MOHN-ee-uhs (snort)
You guys need to watch the original move, “A Man Called Ove” made in Swedish (English subtitles). The part with the student is slightly different (a gay person), with no connection to the former wife. I liked the original movie much better.
It is good to hear that Bill is a trekkie. I went to the ST convention in Hawaii 1974. Met Gene Roddenberry there. great time. I got tickets #48-51, front seat, middle.
About the dinosaurs, amazing facts of how real and recent they are. Catch the Institute for Creation Research or Answers in Genesis groups. They’ve gathered information from around the world about dragons (now called dinosaurs), match it up to the bones and even the photographs of recent creatures humans have killed. It’s just the millions of years. Scientists have even found soft cologen in T-Rex marrow that can’t be more than a few thousand years old.
Check your Bible…
I will probably not watch Dune part 2 or whatever others they make. I will go back to the original…
Err, Bill…Peaky Blinders is set in post First World War Birmingham, England. There are Irish characters in it, but most of the characters are from the English Midlands.
Related to TV show audio, one explanation I had heard, besides the poor mixing mentioned, is that a lot of TVs just don’t have great speakers, and what they do have are mounted facing backwards.
I think regarding the eagles flying over Mordor, what I recall reading from Tolkien fans is that the eagles are not just trained birds but some mythical or mystical demi gods along the lines of that universe, and were not willing to take sides. Essentially, they could not help in a strike against Sauron, but once he was out of the way, they could give someone a ride home.
Wile E Coyote, Supergenius!
John Scalzi wrote a pretty good book called Redshirts, as if there was a parallel universe where a TV show like Star Trek was creating what happened in their universe.
Scott in a “Low Rider”…that video I would pay to see.
The Ott’s new ride pictured below.
Technically, I’ve never bought a brand-new car. If I can’t afford to pay cash for it, I don’t need it. The only ‘new’ automobiles I’ve owned were ones I made…Kit Cars and Street Rods, and that was way back in the early 90’s.
The reason you are still using YouTube for this escapes me, since the reason Scott gave me no longer applies. Of course, it’s your show, and you’re free to do what ever you want…as am I.
It’s becoming too much of a pain in the ass to rip the show from YouTube, and by doing so, you don’t get my view count.
That Rebel Battle Cry – chilling!
Ahhhh….GM. Saturn Sky? Pontiac Solstice?,….”so what if it’s the same car….slap a different badge on it and people will buy”.
Oh, and while I was at it…..
I like these two better. Though I enjoyed my SAAB 9-3 very much until the computer went and the oil pressure soared and took the head gasket (et al) with it. Nearest guy who could replace the computer was 180 miles away and was more than the car was worth.. But it was fun for a while.
I love the looks of the Sky, but I think the Solstice is hideous. That soft round nose and body lines just turn me off.
Of course, my last car (had it 22 years and I still love it, even tho it’s gone) was a Nissan Silvia. Known as 240SX here in the States.
This is my beauty:
I had to sell the Silvia to buy a truck to move out of CA.
And, yeah, it’s really nice to just step into the truck without having to get down to slide into the low-slung car!
BUT! Dammit, I miss my sports car!
My wife and I now watch shows with the captions on. I believe it is due to the “improved” sound level of all of the back ground noise. But we both find it very difficult to understand most dialog on dramatic shows.
I don’t consider myself deaf at all and still have all my pitch recognition. One on one communication is just fine.
I attributed it to bad audio mixing, which can be very very bad these days…. of course, once I got my resound hearing aids….I can now hear – and understand – ever word of dialog….imagine that…
I am blaming the TV people until such time as the evidence is overwhelming that it is me!! 😉
Really hope it’s not as if you can’t hear, it’s really hard to be in the symphony choir.
My husband and I listen with the captions on, too. What I find funny is when there’s music playing, the caption will be a couple of musical notes, or when there are sounds other than dialogue, such as wind blowing or birds singing, it will say that. Is that important to someone who is deaf/hard of hearing?
I like when it says ‘background traffic noise’. I know, that’s why I have the captions on.
I drove a 1975 Datsun 280-Z for 13 years. One does not ‘sit in’ seats (that were sunk in between chassis rails) but rather ‘fall’ into them. Plenty of fun, but older I got, the longer it took for me to get out of the car. 🙂
I just watched Air this weekend. I concur. Great story and very well done.
The scene with Matt Damon and Viola Davis at the Jordan’s home was done so simply and the two of them were great. Two very good actors doing no visible acting.
One of the prettiest cars I’ve ever owned was the Chrysler Sebring Convertible – 2004 Metallic Red with tan top and interior. It was fairly low slung but I was younger then 😉
The correct pronunciation of Gov. DeSantis’ last name is:
WINNER.
This explains everything , Scott. Sienna driver! Yup. Everything. Swagger Wagon!

Toyota’s best commercial, Sooooo Mr. and Mrs Ott! Sienna lovers til the bitter end.
Angela Cartwright was in Alien? 😉
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. Excellent show, as always!
The Trans character was added for the movie. It is not in the book, which was quite good and called “A Man Called Ove” and took place in Sweden.
It was quite unnecessary for the movie and clearly done on purpose.
Other than that it was actually quite a good film.
Scott. I have a 2018 Toyota Sienna Limited and it is one of the best vehicles I have owned. I am still discovering the many things it can do. I only have 90,000 miles on it and have never had a problem with it.
Hope to drive it many more years.
Bob
Hearing the rebel yell was great, but I had no idea that Billy Idol was that old.
I have had my 1965 Triumph Spitfire for 46 years. I often joke that I have to work on the suspension as it seems to be getting lower and lower each year. :-). Will drive it until my last days!
Lucky lucky lucky man you are Joe. I had my 1970 Spitfire Mark 3 for 7 years until it died. Loved that little car. Must have been 4 inches off the ground, and a whopping 76 HP. Whittle’s Camaro? I’d take that bloaterd piece of American trash in the first 15 feet. After that, that’d be the fastest I could go. And maybe I wouldn’t even make the quarter mile at that. I was always replacing one thing after another, usually electronics. Decades later, a co worker jokingly said, Oh, a Triumph? Yeah, electronics by Lucas, (prince of darkness).
I have 213,000 miles on it, never let me down! I did do a engine rebuild at 147k. It is a MK2 with overdrive. Never electrical issues, although I am a electrical engineer which helps. Won it’s 4th national concour title. I love that little car. fun factor off the scale.
Envy! Color? Red, Green, Black?
My biggest issue with the sound on TV and movies is that more often than not the background music is so loud it drowns out all the dialog.
If the film makers were to ignore the Academy’s :GTBTIDASQ+ mandate and just make good movies, what would happen? I think that the Academy Awards would be giving awards to real crappy movies.
Is this garbage what we want in movies?
Can you image a trans Oskar Schindler? Is that what we want?
Can you imagine Rick at the bar saying “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, ‘he’ walks into mine.” Is this what we want? Can you imagine two gays on the bow of the Titanic saying: “Queens of the world!” Is this what we want?
In order to follow dialog on TV I turn on closed captioning. I have it on all the time. It really helps.
De ‘Santis………like de niece and de nephew……
I’m 72, 5’11” 250 lb. and just bought a Miata! Its my latest of many, many sports cars. If you love em, you love em.
I’m 72 (but 180 lb) and have a Solstice (same as the Sky) and a Morgan! I’ve had the Morgan for more than 50 years.
I hope we are all trying to encourage Scott rather than “one up” the next guy, but I, also, am 72 and a couple of years ago, I sold my motorcycle and bought an older well kept BMW 325 Ci convertible so I could still ride with the wind but on 4 wheels instead of 2. I am 6’7″ and 275 with a knee replacement. I admit it is more difficult getting in and out but that is only for a few brief seconds. The ride and the drive is what the driving experience is all about and nothing can beat the sport coupe feel on a spring or autumn day driving through the mountains. Bless you all and as someone quoted Clint, “don’t let the old man in”
saturn roadster- so funny- i gave up my Mazda for the same reason- my response? get a Jeep and lift it 2and a half inches… don’t have to squat anymore… lol
Watch the original Otto, a foreign film. Excellent!
Scott is much more forgiving on most things than I am, if I know they’re going to rub my nose in their nonsense I won’t watch, I considered Otto but now nah.
James Dean was another method mumbler, Dennis Miller once said ‘He made four movies, if he made a few more people would say “What is he mumbling about now”
My parents are from Kerry in Ireland, the men are known for their mumbling. My friends couldn’t understand my father at all.
Clint Eastwood movies, Chris Carley the young man who played the priest in Gran Torino is my first cousin once removed , that is, his mother is my very close first cousin and today is a birthday for both of them.
I just watched Otto recently. Found the Trans person not that bad, but the lecturing disruptive of the whole movie. If they had just left that out, the movie would have been a wonderful tear jerker.
Just have to take something wonderful, and turn it on into something at best annoying.
Yes, Harry It was an un-needed addition over the book to make that character trans and then have him/her ( I actually don’t recall which it was) get kicked out of the house by an intolerant parent.
His late wife’s former student going through difficulty of any type was all that was required. This interrupted the flow of the movie.
I also find that I am just done with all of this woke nonsense. I don’t want to see it. Of course the overt, over the top, nonsense… but also the thing where they try to reinvent beloved characters to suit a narrative. I would be fine with them coming up with all new characters, just stop rewriting the classics already!
As the owner of a BMW 650i, you get used to getting in and out. You build up your squat muscles. The drive is worth it.
Speaking of the Dinosaur show with Attenborough, what’s refreshing is finally speculating about color in the heretofore grey creatures. You think of the variation in the colors of birds, one of our many current dinosaur descendants, you realize they weren’t just bland in color.
Bill’s voice issue is statistically most likely related to reflux. Episodic irritation of the throat and alteration of the voice is often a function of eating late and going to bed when you are born with a tendency to have stomach acids come back up into your throat as you sleep and snore. It is often “silent”, manifesting as throat clearing only, feeling like a post-nasal drip sensation.
I just presumed that his voice is tired from all the DW work. I know when I have weeks where I sing a lot I often get up one of the days with tired vocal chords that need a little rest. (The number of days with singing in a given week that I can do also reduces as I get older) I need to work more at the craft.
I saw Otto but slept through the last half. I will check out Air the little Mermaid is supposedly underperforming but these days I just don’t know. De Santis might have just committed political suicide if reports of a book deal backed by Murdoch to the tune of 10 million dollars are true. Looking forward to the topics this week.
I found the movie ‘Otto” to be quite good with the only sour note being the unnecessary insertion of the trans agenda. I wondered if the character in the original script was just an oddball of some sort, or perhaps gay. Fortunately, this unsubtle messaging was not made into a major theme in the story.
Another movie that demonstrates how the left cannot resist rewriting stories to promote an agenda is ‘On a Wing and a Prayer’ with Dennis Qaid. Apparently, based on a true story where a father with almost zero flight experience manages to safely land a twin-engine plane containing his family after the pilot has a heart attack. Of course, he accomplished this with the considerable assistance of air traffic controllers and an experienced pilot or two guiding him through the process. The movie had a lot of prayer and positive religious references which surprised me given the nature of the movie industry. The kicker comes at the end when they show photos of the original people involved and the actors who portrayed them. Two or three were changed from white to people of color. I was a little shocked because these are not fictional characters. Reality be damned, we have a narrative to sell.
Otto started life as a novel from a Swedish author. It was “A Man Called Ove” . In the novel and the swedish film there were two characters: one who wanted to fix a bike for his girlfriend and his gay coworker who is kicked out of his house by his father.
In Otto, those two characters were consolidated into one character and then made into a trans character, I am sure for the obvious reason.
But the story is from 2012 so why couldn’t you just keep the young gay man?
I think they wanted to cut one of the characters, so instead consolidated them and put in the trans loop because surely no father would kick his gay son out in 2022, so he had to become trans. Because reasons.
