Virus versus Virus

Last Friday night, I came down with a sudden bout of chills and fever of 101.8.  The whole event took 15 minutes to develop.  Pretty sudden.  Aside from some joint aches,  no other symptoms.  The fever lasted 6 hours.

As I lay there on the couch shaking with chills and sweat,  all I could think of was the safety of my children,  the happiness of my wife when I depart,  and dang, why didn’t I clean my office before my untimely death.  Since mid February of this year,  the media had convinced me in an intense ramp up, that illness = covid=death.  That’s it.  Get sick, get dead. After all, it’s a pandemic.  The media, the web and of course this guy…

To the surprise of all,  I woke up Saturday with no fever, a little headache, a little tired and that was it.

On Sunday, my thoughts turned to how someone or some people have convinced so many others that there is now only 1 virus.   Only one…Covid-19.  That’s it!  It’s like Covid is so strong, so powerful, it killed off all other viruses on the planet.

Yet, here I was,  working in the garden on Sunday, and not dead! How could that be?  Could it be that I had some sort of 24 hour “bug”?  You remember those, right?  We used to call these events 24 hour bug or flu or illness.   Since March of 2020,  I had not used that term or even thought such an illness existed anymore.

I can’t stress enough how much I thought that I was certainly going to die in those 1st few hours of being sick that Friday evening.   And I can’t stress enough how angry I feel at  the media trying to, and partially successfully too, manipulate me.

I just watched Governor Newsom scold us for not wearing masks enough and not following his orders.  It reminded me of this little scene from one of the weirdest episodes of the only Star Trek.

Great post Tim, the brainwashing (fear) effect of seeing the constant drone of Covid-19, on radio, TV, internet, death, sick, hospitals full, hospital ships, old folks dying, ventilators is VERY real. IMHO the media and the politicians understand exactly what they are doing and the disheartening and depressing effect it is having on the American people. Power grabbing. I’m glad you didn’t have it but even if you did I have a high confidence level that you would have recovered completely.

Buck, BWDC members get this. Probably too all of the listeners of Levin, Bongino, Sexton, and viewers of Hannity and Tucker and more media outlets than I can think of listing. You are correct, we face a pretty big wave of media coming at us. But collectively we are a pretty smart, savvy and tenatious group. I get a feeling that just calmly calling out the media won’t work. We have to get in their faces a bit. I’m starting with my local NBC affiliate KSBW TV.

Thanks Laura! You know, with 21 years of business travel to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, 60 trips in that time period, I have been exposed to every known and possibly unknown bacteria, virus and yes, fungal infection. I believe I had SARS in the height of the outbreak in 2004, after staying in a hotel in Foshan, Guangdong China. I ended up in a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, where at a 1am visit, the ER doc declared I only had a cold and sent me back to the hotel. Took me 5 months to recover back in the USA.
I’ve had food borne illnesses out the wazoo, blood fungal infections, colds, flu’s, you name it. I must have antibodies of anything China can through at me already coursing through my veins. I was in China on my recent (and undoubtedly LAST) biz trip in December of 2019. Riding subways, riding high speed rails, unknowingly touching every surface and breathing every sneeze and cough thrown at me in the Guangzhou South Railway station. I came back in good health and no symptoms or awareness of the viral nightmare to come. All through the shelter in place, I kept telling my wife that I felt like the Bruce Willis character in the movie Unbreakable. I had not been ill at all for 18 months.
And then I caught a 24 hr flu bug a week ago… so much for being “unbreakable”!

So, did you get a covid test to prove yourself and gov wrong?
Of course, I’ve heard the rumors that the covid tests themselves can administer the virus themselves, so buyer beware…

Grace, this is what I know. I called my doctor’s office and explained the symptoms. My doctor got back to me and suggested that I head down to take a test to insure I didn’t have it. My wife had the same symptoms at the same time, and since we share the same family doctor, we both got tested.
Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s clinic in our city was administering the tests in a very amazingly efficient “drive up” system. New tests are now 95% accurate (per several RN’s on staff) and now the swab only goes up halfway to to your brain, not all the way up!
We were contacted in 24 hours as promised, and we both were negative. My work and my wife’s work required testing after fevers simply as a big precaution, and we had to wait 3 days after symptoms subsided, which was fine with me.
Like I said in my post, the media has tried to tell us that all other illnesses / viruses and bacterial infections simply must have gone away, because there is only ONE illness now. Wuhan Coronavirus. That’s it! No more. Well, guess what, they are wrong. Whatever caused our rapid fever and chills, with associated next day headache and fatigue, it wasn’t Covid-19. Maybe it was it’s half pint Mini-Me, Covid -8 1/2 .

Maybe it was a half pint of Baijiu. Or maybe that’s the cure. That stuff will kill anything inside you. Given how often you’ve been to China, you must have had a bunch of it.
Most vile stuff I have ever consumed.
Glad you are feeling well.

Bai jaio. Rougly translated to “white wine”. Right! White Wine, harharharhar hahahaha!..It comes in one and only one style of bottle. Looks remarkably like a Wizard Charcoal Lighter Fluid plastic bottle. I never had the reason or stupidity to try a shot glass of Wizard Lighter Fluid, but it I did, I could confirm it takes Exactly Like Bai Jiao. Ralph, there where times in my early travels where my business hosts would all look at each other, put out their cigarettes all the the same time, and when the smoke cleared, out would come a couple of bottles of Bai Jiao. The best and safest brand is Moutai Bai Jiao. Safe or not, it’s EXTREMELY flammable and that is why it was cigarettes out, then down the shots. Glad those days are 15 years past! I’m so happy I have found someone on BWDC who not only has tried it, but despises it as much as I.

I found it to be the most vile thing. Last year was my first trip to China after 30 years in Bus Dev, party of 3 of us and 15 Chinese. After the third shot of lighter fluid I realized that several of my hosts were drinking wine. Now, growing up in an Italian household (my grandfather came over in 1924) I can drink some red wine. I switched and the rest of the night was fine. My boss, bless his heart, stuck it out. He was hurting the next morning.
I have tried to explain to people what it is but always come up short. Lighter fluid or kerosene is the closest I can come. JP-4 maybe.
Combined with the “fish” we had. Oy Vey!
