Amy Shira Teitel has a fun, Apollo-era-focused YouTube channel titled “That Vintage Space” that I’ve greatly enjoyed for a while now. Last night I ran across this livestream she did from a Spacefest conference 3 years ago that was simultaneously a delightful watch and made me yearn for a time and world in which such gatherings will be possible again. The desire to go to such events and connect myself more with things I love and people who share similar interests intensified for me over the past year or so, peaking just as COVID lockdown became a thing (my father’s passing in February and my consequent re-examining of my own life no doubt contributed to that feeling). I wonder now with a bit of longing when we can expect such gatherings to be possible again, and what unseen potentials we’ll be missing out on — chance connections people might have made that could have led to something in business or friendship — with the current and ongoing limitations on our ability to gather. I hope there will be a time in the not too distant future when we can gather and enjoy such conferences and events again, and perhaps be newly grateful for the opportunities and togetherness they offer.
