A Light at The End of The Barrel

Tonight I walked with my neighbor (We’ll call her Hope) as I have many nights before. I took up the habit because she has had multiple operations on her feet and cannot run from danger with any great speed. Most nights I point out satellites crossing the sky or identify foxes and coyotes traversing the subdivision. Despite living all too close to a major city this is as exciting as it usually gets…Until lately.

With the riots and senseless violence rising up across our nation, Hope asked me what I thought about it all. What do you tell a 62 year old woman that couldn’t fight off a cold much less an angry hate zealot, when she asks you what you think about it all?

I am not smart enough to come up with a compelling lie. So, I told her the truth. “Hope, I recommend buying a means of protection. If you need me, I am nearby but please buy a gun. Get training and practice.”

I half regretted the words before I finished speaking them. You see, I live in New England, which is Latin for “Does the state allow us to do that, here? “ She looked at me for a moment, frowned deeply, then said “You know what, I need to. I really need to do that.”

Hope, you might be interested to know, was deeply liberal in many regards (including the second amendment) only a few weeks ago. She believed that weapons were the stuff of good cops and bad headlines. I have spent some hours over the years attempting to convince her that good citizens with firearms save lives. It took the insanity of rioters and violent people to show her the rational preparedness of firearms ownership.

Hope is not alone. Gun sales in the United States have climbed skyward in response to the chaos taking our streets. Those that were adamant anti-gunners are now making purchases in hopes of having what they need before they need it. The Democrats likely missed this bit of reality while cheering on the ruin and vandalism. And just who is it that supports the right to bear arms in this country? Who has been struggling to keep that God given right unmolested by agencies and elected officials?

If I were a betting man, I would guess that bit of knowledge has dodged the goalie and made it into the minds of many formerly anti-second amendment voters. Come to think of it, I would bet my last bullet that these same people have noticed all of the other preposterous nonsense of the left in the last few months.

I have to believe that people will take some of that to the polls with them. As dim as things are, if you squint and look really closely, you might see hope walking through the streets of this battered country. Don’t you worry, friends, hope is armed and ready for those that wish to snuff her out.

Vote like you mean to preserve Hope.

For my birthday this week, my brother took me to a gun range. Despite my best intentions of always wanting to learn to handle a gun properly, I hadn’t been shooting since my dad took me to the dump to shoot cans when I was 12. That would have been with his .22 revolver. Of course, back in the olden days we didn’t Need No Stinkin Ear Protection. But I was a Girl, and I didn’t like the noise, and the gun was too heavy for me. So I went and hid in the truck while my dad, my brother, and his friend shot cans and old TV sets and whatever else they could find.
Anyway, I’ve now had a brief professional tutorial and found a gun I can handle well (Walther CCP) and was pleased to discover that I remembered, instinctively, all the lessons my dad taught me when I was 12.
Thinking of putting my paper target up in the window by the back door since I don’t have a Dobermann anymore.

My brother teaches weapons and tactics. He has given me pointers for years. All of my military/law enforcement/corrections training was nothing compared to good one on one training with a pro. Excellent work, Laura!!!!
