I was just reading a blurb about Pertinax, a Roman emperor who ruled for only 86 days. He was considered competent general and governor, and was installed by the Praetorian Guard as emperor after the assassination of Commodus, who was dangerously insane. The Pertinax immediately began to make reforms intended to restore stability and good governance to the empire (Make Rome Great Again?). But he was assassinated a short time later when his reforms called for restoring discipline to the Praetorian Guard and a stop to the praetorians from plundering the roman treasury. Ultimately the Praetorian Guard had to be disbanded altogether as they were only ever going to serve themselves.

Point taken about the date, I should have pointed that out but the politicization of the Intel apparatus has been going on for far longer than those two years. Like you, I wonder if changes over the last two years have improved the situation. I suspect only superficially because it runs deep.
