I’m not a great theologian, but I think it’s reasonable to say that those 60 Dems who wrote that letter are as dead in the Spirit as anyone can be.

I read and appreciated your essay. (And may I say, I too am a Mahlerian.) When I try to reconstruct the phenomenology of someone like Pelosi or Biden, people who would license the killing of babies in the womb but who want at the same time to be identified as Catholics, or even just as generic Christians, I fail. Maybe it has to do with the ubiquitous narcissism of contemporary politics. Even for the non-religious, despite their alienation from Grace, the Church retains a luminosity, to share in which a Biden or a Pelosi thinks will be of benefit on the campaign trail. Like every position pronounced by a Lefty, it is pure ostentation, intended to bolster the ego. But the thing about the narcissist is — his ego is deformed, shrunken, and stiff.
