I agree Scott!! Great to see women stretching their legs. Nice to see them shucking social “norms” and trying new things. Why let men have all the fun??
LOL!! This is great!!
Bill started out with talking about American exceptionalism. Here is something from way back that really became a hit here in the Detroit area. You can hear it on YouTube. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Americans_(commentary)
Scott, come visit us in Alaska. Lots of room, still some freedom left.
Stephen, we’ll leave a light on for you in Montana. Just stay away from Bozeman and Missoula.
On 28 Apr of this year, my wife and I climbed into a 26′ Penske rental box van, with her Malibu resting on a full-chassis trailer behind. We left San Diego and drove 1800 miles to NE Texas, with a rental cost of just under $2,700 (by far the lowest price among them and U-Haul, Budget, Ryder). When I turned in the rental, I asked about the reverse trip, and was told it was $1,075. The rental agent said that the up-charge for the trip out of California was because they were being forced to hire independent drivers to take trucks back to California and Washington, because nobody was moving in that direction.
Serious “lightening round” question for the blog commentators:
Is there a difference in meaning between the words “liberty” and “freedom” that is, well, meaningful? I couldn’t think of any but maybe I am missing something subtle?
The differences have become mostly semantic, but are not insignificant, if you intend to use the most appropriate words for a given concept. Freedom is a primarily internal concept, beginning with free will, freedom of expression, and freedom of attitude. Liberty is a much more physical ideal describing the absence of restrictions placed upon a person by outside forces. Of necessity there are overlapping functions. You are at liberty to attend church because the Constitution guarantees freedom of assembly.
Thank you for your reply. And yet our language can still trip us up.
“I am at liberty to not attend any church because the Constitution provides the written basis for our rule of law (i.e., law of the land), from whence I/we can demand and work to secure my/our freedom of conscience.” Hopefully that expresses your distinction properly.
But a warranty is only as good as the integrity of the organization and people behind it. The document by itself does not guarantee anything.
And it turns out that “the right of assembly” that we may believe is implied in the 1st Amendment might in fact have more legislative or judicial restrictions than we non-lawyers might have expected. This discussion at Law and Liberty explores this to some degree: https://lawliberty.org/book-review/of-courts-and-communities/?utm_source=LAL+Updates&utm_campaign=24740503aa-LAL_Daily_Updates&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_53ee3e1605-24740503aa-72504701
Whoa Whoa whoa, Constitutional (and Political ) discussions aside, there is a direct difference between the two terms. “Freedom” means “ability to act/think”, “Liberty” means “Freedom with responsibility for that action”. That is what the founding fathers used it to mean and epistemologically that is the fundamental difference between the terms.
You would think that such advantageous U Haul rates would incentivize the leftists/ progressives/ Dems to move from the red states to the realms of their political compatriots.
But nature abhors a vacuum of busybodies so, as Steve recounts with his moves, there is a form of geographic Gresham’s Law operating here to dilute the tendency towards liberty with those who can’t handle it properly. Florida is going purple based on growing from 14 million to 21 million people over the last few decades that I have lived here. We need to reinvigorate the campaign highlighting our cockroaches, alligators, mosquitoes, humidity, etc.
We can remove invasive species of plants without getting any special arbor permit from the county. Wonder if that applies for the removal of invading transplants as well.
Bill, I would be curious WHAT? Evidence and Facts do you have that Putin has NO RESPECT for President Trump? Is he NOT the first President other than Ronald Reagan to stand up PROUDLY and confront the Russian in the last 30 years?
Cost me about $3k to get a Ryder to get the hell outta Los Angeles. That was 6yrs ago. Totally worth it. Even if I did end up on the outskirts of Austin.
You know they say goats will eat anything anywhere. ๐
Just don’t get cornered up a tree, like some of those African goats.
Is that rule 35?
Rule 35: An addendum of the internet rules stating that if there is no porn of it, it will be made
Rule 34, guys. Rule 34.
What is rule 34?
The 34th rule of the Internet, which states that any object, character, or media franchise imaginable has porn associated with it.
Where have I been?
Not on the internet?
AntiFa guy: HEY! Why you doing that? We’re peaceful.
Local resident: You’re peaceful because I have a gun.
Kinda like that time that W surged 7 carriers when China was getting uppity?
Regarding keeping Europe safe from Putin I believe Poland is the first/front line of defense. History tells us so.
Ronald Reagan referred to peace through superior firepower. He also said “Of all the four wars that occurred during my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.”.
I LOVE Stephen Green’s Lightning Round. I know this political stuff is serious business and I do take it seriously but … It’s nice to have a little fun with it once in a while too. Lest we court becoming the thing we oppose.
Is this really on XXIX? Thought for sure it would be over L by now and getting close to C. Also looks like my topic guesses from Backstage was only 20%
Steve,
Thank you for pointing out a financial incentive for these blue knuckleheads to stay in their blue centric hell holes.
Bill, Steve and Scott – you laughed and snickered at the mention of watching the convention coverage on C-Span but that’s exactly where I watched all 4 nights of the RNC – reason being is that they showed ALL of it, uninterrupted, and not a single political talking head telling me their opinion or what I should think. It was an awesome way to watch.
All I watched of either convention was the presidential nomination acceptance speeches. But you’re right, C-SPAN was the way to go. Do you know if any if the mainstream media interrupted or cut away from Trump’s acceptance speech?
I’m sorry, I don’t know – but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did.
MSNBC was constantly interrupting with their “fact checking”. See “Whatfinger.com” for the video replays.
Fox interrupted at the end with all the gorgeous fireworks and the singing going on that I could not hear as bobble head guy was going on and on about what we just saw. I almost threw my almost empty champagne glass at the guy on tv. Yes, I was that mad.
I watched the RNC’s own livestream via youtube. (Didn’t watch it all.) One night, it was a very bad signal, and I ended up switching to FoxNews’s livestream. That was the night of the hurricane (which made landfall 150 miles to my east). I watched the RNC’s livestream again the last night, but learned later that they had not broadcast the full event (there was music beforehand which was not streamed). Fewer than 1000 people were watching. Also, on the first day, the RNC did not have the day’s coverage with the roll-call of the states and Trump’s “surprise” address. They still don’t have it. I had to go to C-Span for that.
