Clues from the Mural Mystery: Understanding the Black Death That’s Killing Our Society

The COVID-19 pandemic problem is not a virus — it’s a Black Death of cultural and moral decay. And we don’t have the basic research to understand what’s going on.

The COVID-19 pandemic problem is not a virus — it’s a Black Death of cultural and moral decay. And we don’t have the basic research to understand what’s going on. Bill Whittle finds clues to the answer in a mural mystery trail that starts at an old planetarium.

It’s the death of reverence brought about by the Frankfurt School marxists and the decades-long war of attrition carried out first clandestinely by the KGB and their traitorous US agents in academia, media, schools, government, and journalism. Yuri Bezmenov, a 1970s KGB defector, describes it in a series of videos that somehow are still available on Youtube. Since the rise of China, this work is now being furthered by the Chinese quite openly and self-perpetuates and accelerates because it has become part of the liberal world-view.
In a corollary to the broken windows theory of crime, why wouldn’t people lose reverence when there’s no stigma or shame brought about by

  • the coarsening of language. I’m in sales and F@*k is the most common word I hear throughout the day, and I’m mostly interacting with strangers.
  • dressing down to look like overgrown babies who have been left to fend for themselves in the streets
  • the normalization of pornography
  • the open dishonesty and corruption of politicians, bureaucrats, journalists, scientists and teachers.
  • abandoning religion and disrespecting Christianity by, for instance, submerging a crucifix in a jar filled with urine
  • fathering kids and leaving them to be raised by over-whelmed, poor, and ill-prepared mothers.

When hardly anything has a lasting and serious consequence, people will choose the path of least resistance. If graffiti goes unpunished, why not punch an old Asian lady in the face when you pass her in street? The marxists and fascists who rule all our major institutions are dedicated to breaking this country and they have figured out that if nothing is special or holy, then all of society’s guardrails are gone, and we will finish off our civilization ourselves.

you were right on target except for the last bullet point. females file for 80% of divorces. who is abandoning whom? women are now married to the government. the fed pays her bills and that buys her vote……hence 60% of females vote d’rat. 70% of college student loans are held by females. otherwise good post.

I did not account for the demise of marriage as an institution. You’re right. I was mostly thinking about the “baby mama” phenomenon where marriages don’t even happen and single mothers have children with more than one father who is absent from his children’s lives.

Go to Amazon Prime and watch “How Should We Then Live”. It’s a 10 part series from 1977 by Francis Schaefer. He does a fantastic job of going through history and showing how society shifted as we moved from a God centered view of truth to the humanist, Man centered view of truth. At the end he predicts what other things will go wrong, and he is almost spot on to our problems today. It’s scary because it essentially validates his thesis. But he does show that getting back to absolute truth, God’s truth, is our path out of all of this.

I remember reading a book years back called “Freakonomics” which tracked trends with non-intuitive causes…One of their studies connected the 1960s/70s dramatic rise in crime to TV (no NOT TV “violence”…just TV!)… Before television, people lived in relative isolation…with TV, we got to see how others lived..specifically how the rich and well off lived… Envy set in…and with envy comes jealousy, discontent, and a “why can’t I have that too” attitude which meant more people willing to commit crimes to get what they felt they were entitled to. Turns out there’s a GOOD REASON the 10 commandments include “not coveting thy neighbor’s wife of goods”.

Integrity: doing the right thing even though no one is watching. Integrity is a learned behavior and is contrary to human nature. Human nature is about me and mine, but integrity is about honoring our word, our oath, our neighbors, our community, our existence. There was a time when we learned integrity from our parents, our teachers, our scout masters our church leaders. Not any more.

agreed. those are gone it seems. golf is a game where your integrity (or lack of) gets tested. that’s why golf is seen as a game of the right, not left. cheaters eventually get exposed in golf. you’re out there on your own and mostly no one is watching that close. it’s not a game for people like palosi, omar, tlaib, aoc, mccain, shumer, sasse, romney, chaney, mcconnell, biden, harris, maddow, whoopie, baher, hirono, clinton on and on this list could go for pages.

I remember when violent video games and TV shows came out and thinking this is going to end badly. Add that when Mom’s went to work and leaving their kids at home watching trash TV and you have to wonder what happened to our society?

Bill part of what you are seeking I think lies with the formal introduction of the dept of education. Reagan’s greatest failure in my opinion.
i’ve observed that in general most of the people that have no problem defacing society graduated after 1984.

A few libertarian writers have pointed out that the spread of the black death matches the spread of several popular tax laws. Popular with kings that is. This included the taxing of reed ponds used for thatch production. The taxing of fern ‘farms’ and wild harvest of ferns, used for bedding. People switched to untaxed straw. Both reed thatch and fern bedding repel rats and flees. The kings also tried to tax rabbits and banned pet weasels and stoats used to hunt rabbits. The weasels and stoats also hunted household rats. The plague killed the kings too because they were too proud to use the peasants bedding or their smelly flee repelling herbs. There is a couple of scientific papers mapping the correlation.

Early in the black plague the Jewish communities of southern Europe worked out plague was spread by the flees. Quarantine is in the bible in the book of Leviticus. The word is the Latin translation of the key word 14. However antisemitism was so fierce in Europe at the time of the plague that Jews who proved immune were killed for witchcraft in several places when they tried to warn people. It is safe to say that in the medieval era antisemitism killed more gentiles than Jews worldwide.

Ah, you beat me to it. And the bad cargo was most likely due to the breakdown of trade after Constantinople fell.

You must go back and find the people who predicted what is happening now way back in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. Those people include: Henry M. Morris, R. J. Rushdoony, David Noebel, Carl Wieland. I am proud to say that I know the latter two and have corresponded with the sons of the first two. Their books are widely available.

The Media is the Vector. Most, if not all of the respondents on this page have a solid and lucid take on the situation and/or its component issues. In terms of these macro-trends and their late 20th century/generational timing: This cultural decay (moral entropy, a.k.a. sin) was not really initiated by the rise of mass media & pervasive comm technology since the 1950s, but unleashed and hideously accelerated and facilitated by it. A critical inflection point on the acceleration curve, if you will.
Consider 1950s media content: Even as more wholesome content initially ruled the airwaves, reflecting established, Judeo-Christian cultural norms, Hugh Hefner got another camel’s nose into the tent. What concerned parents warned about Elvis was actually true about Hefner’s budding media empire.
Coached along and defended at every turn by the instinctively destructive Left in the form of activist lawyers, Frankfurt school acolytes and actual Soviet Influence operations, these kollektiv ticks eventually dug in so deep, they became the dog: With precious few exceptions, our J-school graduates are now well trained, functional Marxists, even if they would slag-off Marx himself as a ‘dead white guy.’ Redefine Journalism in a self-serving way? Why stop there? Redefine Truth itself; a fungible commodity in their bloody hands.
Not a coincidence that modern media moguls, to include Silicon Valley now rule (significant portions of) this darkest corner of human enterprise.
Doom On Them.

re: Vaccine Passports and Tech.
I’ve work in tech for 30 years. I’ve spent time in “The Valley”. My conclusion is that many of the people in Big Tech companies generally have gotten used to the idea of “lording” over others and they like it. They hire young people, usually from South Asia, but a fair number from East Asia too, and with a single word for speaking out of turn, these young people are sent packing. No second chances, just gone. It’s a variation on indentured servitude. Behave absolutely and you won’t risk losing your visa.
Power is addictive, especially for small people. Now they get to apply the same principals they’ve used on young people from Asia for years, to the rest of us. Comply or lose your right to free movement.

We no longer teach the “Golden Rule”, or as Jesus told us, the second great commandment: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” Following the first great commandment would certainly be an excellent starting point, though. Satan has infused our society with his hatred and deceit. Unless our country rejects that and returns to God and the values He has taught us, our society is in rapid decay. Can you say, “Sodom and Gomorrah”?

So many others have pointed to our culture turning away from God.

I will add an element to the discussion. Part of the problem may be individuals turning away from God as they age, but I doubt it is much. Part may be that each culture is invaded by ‘barbarians’ known as children, who must be civilized. Maybe we didn’t civilize our children well enough, or teach them to fear God, or at least respect each other…

But maybe we were invaded by barbarians that were NOT our children, too. Maybe adults and adolescents who were not raised in Miami came there from a less moral place that didn’t teach them to respect other people and their things, to always play fair and be honest. And those foreign barbarians didn’t care as much about the murals, because it’s not their culture as it’s not their stuff. And no, I am not just talking about New Yorkers.

Don’t you think that in the developed world there are people who don’t respect rules? Maybe more than America ‘s… maybe less… but if you invented an immigration system where you can come live in America and get free stuff from the gov’t and charities and all you have to do is… be willing to cheat. Just break the rules and you can come here. That’s what we have. Our immigration system is a giant filter that makes it hard for honest people to get in and easy for cheaters. Get a student visa and disappear. Cross the border illegally and stay as long as you want. If you say to yourself or your family ‘I don’t care if I could sneak over and make a lot more money… what profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul! I refuse to be a cheat or a liar for an easier time!” You can stay in your country filling out forms for decades and we probably won’t let you in.

We deliberately attract cheats and filter out honest people. What did we think would happen?

Lastly, I’m not sure the distrust of police and prosecutors is a bad thing. We have far too much trust in govt officials now. Make everyone’s first thought be “prove it” and it will reduce the amount of corruption they can get away with by smiling and saying “would I lie?” Yes Senator. Yes officer. Yes Mr. Comey, you probably would. If they are honest then they won’t object to you wanting proof. If they bristle at the demand to prove things beyond their words, it’s safe to assume they are cheats.

Lastly: r/K

I would say and have said, the answer to every question and problem in this world is Jesus. I know, I am just a crazy nut job, because that just cannot be the answer.

There’s the broken window rule. An abandoned building with lots of windows can sit there for many months intact, until some kid comes along and throws a rock through one of them. Then other kids will see that and throw their own rocks. Soon, all the windows are broken. So if you own that building, you must fix that first broken window fast, before the broken window syndrome sets in.
Later, John.

The 1946 movie It’s A Wonderful Life has the scene where George Baily throws a rock through the old building. He pays for it later as it becomes his home, but still.

Love me some Steve Miller band, but you are right-on with your take on Take the Money and Run. Amazing how you can apply a good tune to a horrible message and you start singing it and liking it. However, that song came out when I was a junior in high school and I knew, just listenting to the words, that it was a f’d up message. Bored, lazy and selfish teens or 20’s rob someone and kill them, run away and keep running, and no morale, no ending, and probably to this day drinking margarita’s in Cancun. Why did I recognize it was a messed up lyric? Possibly through the luck of the draw, I pulled a royal flush in two very very good parents who strongly suggested that murder and robbery and not being accountable for your actions was, well, WRONG..
Miller’s greatest, Fly Like an Eagle, “feed the babies, who don’t have enough to eat, shoe the children, with no shoes on their feed, house the people, living in the street, Oh Oh there’s a solution….” And what was his solution? “I want to fly like an eagle to the sea, fly like an eagle let my spirit carry me, I want to fly like an eagle, til I’m free, right through the revolution”.
Yeah Steve Miller, who was thick in the middle of the summer of love in San Francisco, that’s really helpful.
That was the culture then, and it spawned a million more devotees who spawned a million more.
But hey, man were those catchy hooks.

I think we stopped placing importance on a persons character and started looking at issues and likeability that enabled and facilitated our current situation. Looking at your music example, some adults thinking they were righteous (parents and leaders) did not accept the rock music at it’s face and called all of it tools of the devil they didn’t want to accept the fact that the tune was fun throwing the good out with the bad lyrics. This heavy handed approach started as a current shift in the youth and in time they too used this same heavy handed approach dismissing those they once respected. In some ways this was just the normal phase that teens rebel, but the music brought in a lot of new looks and attitudes and because discernment wasn’t used in the beginning it started a shift much greater than normal. It takes more time and effort to go to the character of an issue but saves a lot of grief in the end if effort was used in the beginning. Chasms are hard to fill let alone push back in place.
And that leads me to the beginning. I worked for a Disney branch related to the parks and in the building where I worked those types of murals were painted continuously for parks around the world. The Disney parks do not have too big a problem with these vandals because every day park workers go through the park looking for damage, they correct it quickly. They do this because when one miscreant sees where someone tried to make a name for themselves by tagging something it encourages others until the whole thing needs to be replaced. To top that off there are very little if an consequences to bad behavior or respect for private property. People have been carving in trees forever, seeing it encourages others to join it even romanticized the destruction though it is a different story if you own the tree.
Yes there is a problem with America’s behavior and thinking or character. We have taught or allowed the youth be taught that they have a right to be happy not just a right to strive for it, to have what they want immediately and that consequences can be escaped The belief that adults should be at the very least listened to can be dismissed as it has been for generations. I believe this attitude can be fixed but the cost of fixing it may just be too high for most people in the US.

Politics < Culture < People < Morality

Morality guides people, people create culture, and politics is upstream of culture.

We used to have religion to provide moral guidance, but people abandoned a belief in an absolute truth and instead adopted moral relativism. Bill, even your friend Evan Sayet would agree that relativism is at the heart of leftism. If everyone returned to believing in absolute truth then leftism would collapse. I’m not saying all atheists need to become catholics, but there needs to be an absolute truth that guides morality and religion did a great job at that for a long time.

Bill, you’re right. At 3:02, we are suffering a “catastrophic moral plague.”
Where does morality come from? What is the source of morality?
Is the source of morality the individual (wherein everyone has his “own” morality)? Is it the school or the educational system? Government can enforce morality but is government the source of morality?
At 12:35 — “Politics is downstream from culture. And Culture is downstream from people.”
AND PEOPLE are downstream from God.
If people no longer believe that, or they forget God or actively reject Him and His moral standards, then morality is LOST and lawlessness replaces it. That’s where we are now and that’s what you’re sensing, Bill.
The only way to fix it (that I am aware of) is to return to God who will lovingly forgive and “heal their land.”. If not, then that nation is doomed.

I remember thinking early on when I heard that Steve Miller song, what a morally bankrupt story it was (I do listen to lyrics closely, when you can at least understand them). I also remember associating with a movie of the same period – and I always wondered if there was some association twixt the two – “The Getaway” with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. That was one of the first movies, at least in my memory, where not only did the bad guys not get caught and get away, there was a lot of subtle (and not-so-subtle) plot elements leading you to the conclusion that it was okay that they escaped the normal moral justice outcome.
As to where we have gone sideways, and more recently more like backward, I see a lot of the reasons in the comments here. And I believe they are all correct. There are many reasons for our current state of dysfunction, but the most generic label I think we can put on it is a turn away from God and basic moral principals. If it is not being taught and ingrained within a family and community structure, it will not be absorbed magically through osmosis.
Civilization and order are difficult. Today’s society is constantly and obsessively seeking the path of least resistance. This is just as much a naturally human behavior as it is the nature of water and electricity. The Bible constantly reminds one that the easy path (for us humans) is generally provided with the assistance or involvement of evil and temptation, whereas the difficult, but righteous path to a destination will yield a greater reward as a result of the more complete journey. You could be a complete atheist and still recognize the truth in that.

It has something to do with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ5LAJsebzM
This is what happens when integrity is lost and principles are put after self advancement/self aggrandizement . Be that robbing a man’s castle, placing graffiti on a wall, or placing yourself above the others on a sports team.
There are no longer negative consequences – social or legal to bad behavior and often the bad behavior is rewarded – either because you simply “got away with it” or because the society has actually begun at laud that behavior.
The “transmission vector” is a form of cynicism… why not take advantage of this? Everyone is doing it. You don’t want to be a chump or a square , do you?
In the past this sort of moral decay is not stopped except by religious fervor – which itself can be turned into a dangerous and destructive force that most classical liberals/libertarians/individualists are very wary of.
Ben Franklin wrote an article on the importance of gossip and censure in human cultures, so that the patterns of “good behavior” are reinforced and “bad behavior” was discouraged. The gossip , while bearing a stigma, was doing the community a service as well. Back when your murals were pristine they took the form of the “Church Lady” – the holier than thou social scold that made sure everyone knew if you were coloring outside of the lines and encouraged others to censure you.. But then coloring outside of the lines became fashionable in the 60s’ and individualists/libertarians helped this along – wanting to be free to do and live as they liked. They taught their children to not care what other people thought of them (with the expectation that one would still choose to seek the respect of those worthy of commanding your own ). But there is no objective definition of what is worthy – so freedom was given to respect those who were – well – not worthy.. .
Individualists/libertarians generally reject collectivist arguments – that LGBTQ relationships, or drugs, or whacked out belief practice A/B/C is corrupting the children, or that certain lyrics or words needs to be restricted for the “social good” – So in a way individualism/libertarianiasm/Classical Liberalism advocates a culture without cultural antibodies. The natural antibodies – the scolds – through suppression of religion, and general social ethic about caring about such censure, found their own way to be important – They became today’s Karen. They are basically co-opted antibodies , now trying to establish new collective normal, and via the same means. Wokeness is still a religious fervor – just one with a secular God – Government.
Classical liberalism failed to enlist and retain the scolds – it weakened their positions in traditionally religious organizations and they were then not pressed into service reinforcing the individualist principles. We need people scolding others when they advocate violence to negate natural rights, or abusing government power by refusing to seek the consent of the governed or to faithfully and equally execute the laws. But really, I am not sure our natural scolds would get much out of that type of scolding – as I fear there is insufficient material there to give them their daily affirmation they are better than those around them. Wokism not only gives them ample material but the whole woke Olympics in coming up with new ways to be better and more woke than others. Not sure how to address this, but I think it is , at least in part, the basis of the issue.

There seems to be a cultural component of long standing. Some cultures mark on walls, and others don’t.
There seems to be a reason why the word used to describe marks on walls is an Italian word.

As you read through the Bible you find that the pattern toward destruction repeats itself over and over again. The fallen nature of man finds it impossible to believe God has a better plan. Therefore, Americans took the bait of ‘health insurance’ and surrendered their ‘health assurance’ which led to everything becoming more and more expensive and people becoming sicker. (The medical industry sucks up 1/6 of our economy.)
Women were inspired in school to think of motherhood as less worthy and career superior so they gave up raising their children, surrendering them to the government to twist their little minds and leave them without godly values. Every generation becomes more selfish and less considerate. Godly values and the function of the family, the core of a civil society, continually erode.
I’m a follower of Jesus and regret to say that most of the organized church is more interested in increasing attendance that fostering righteousness. Don’t despair. There will be a tremendous move of God before Jesus returns of His own.

The major difference between the Black Death and the problems enumerated by Bill is that the Black Death was neither a planned event nor was it welcomed.
Today’s problems are different. Starting in the early 1960s a decision was made by our cultural and leadership elites that Western civilization had to be transformed.
Don’t trust anyone over 30. (Those making that request are now our oppressors). I am 69 years old; mea culpa.
Occupy colleges; the administrations acquiesced.
Heroes were bad; the bad guys were good. Individual autonomy was valued until it wasn’t; only certain behaviors and beliefs were tolerated.
The central government destroyed local institutions and the provisions of welfare and services fell under federal control.
There was no downside for asocial behavior; in many ways it was glorified.
I understand the drive from the Left to see that much of the above occurred. In many ways those leftists are being over run by the Thugs.
I do not see any of this being reversed. For the first time in history storming the castle, beheading the rulers, going on strike, etc. no longer are effective. Our overlords control us (merely selectively cutting off Internet access can neuter and real opposition).
I am very pessimistic.

Bill, this is one of the best videos you have ever posted. Your analogy to the black death is spot on, and the unfortunate demise of the murals is a microcosm of the demise of a good part of our nation.

The cancer as I view it, graduating high school in 1967 and college in 1971, is the lack of respect and moreover the lack of trust in authority, institutions, and government overall.

When I was growing up it was like living in Ozzy and Harriet land. Single income households, not much money, but in most cases happiness. We trusted our government, our schools, our police, and our neighbors.

We were with our neighbors almost every day, especially in the summertime. Most of us had air conditioning, but they were all window units and usually in two places, the kitchen and Mom and Dad’s bedroom. In the heat of summer the neighbors used to gather in the driveway to listen to the baseball game, or in the backyard.

As a kid, for the most part, we stayed in line. Why? Because not only had we will look out for our parents when we were out of line, we also had to look out for our neighbors.

The community took care of any wrongdoing. One good example of this was the unfortunate incident where a teenager flashed a young schoolgirl. The neighbors discussed this, the men. I was young and obviously shocked at this event. What I remember was someone finally said ” they have to move “. Nothing more was said. They moved.

We respected one another. If you went to school and disrespected someone you would most likely find out very quickly that that was not acceptable, usually by getting up after being knocked down.

It’s my opinion that Vietnam changed it all. We lost respect for our government, we were encouraged by left-wing forces who used us as useful idiots, and molded our attitudes.

How do we cure this plague? The first thing I would think would be for our government and institutions to try and regain some semblance of trust and truth. The likelihood of that happening right now I believe is zero. The plague is upon us, and as the last one, it is driven by rats. God help us all.

Watch the movie Beat Street and the rivalry between Ramo and Spit. That answers part of the question posed in this video. Also, I feel an inherent weakness in solving the social problem presented while George Soros and Klaus Schwab continue to work their dark magic against us, unchallenged.

Step away from deep breathing while standing over the latrine. I hear a lot of people saying how good it smells. Losing your sense of smell can be very dangerous. Look at Biden and his cabal. Fortunately there will be a remnant of Christians who will stand to survive these times. God has promised us this.

Let’s take as many others as we can. Barbara. Eternity is long and hell and hell.

I have spoken to many, many people about that very song! When people speak about rap (which I am no fan of) I steer their focus right back to Take The Money and Run. Usually that point is followed by something like “Yeah, but that’s different.” Nope. It was the same thing.
Right and wrong are choices. If we decided by what feels good our choices would be wrong far more often. Despite being destructive, our choices would tend toward wrong but appealing actions.
Free love, live the way you want at the cost of others, “Nobody is really ever wrong.”, are just a few plexiglass covers over the artifice of evil. The only thing that has ever shattered that preposterous shield is truth and the application of truth in our lives.
Our dissenters can mock an idea but they cannot so easily hide an open and apparent fact. Living better made the Jewish populations of Europe safer than others. The other populations noted this and blamed them…Because they could not deny the difference.
No one is perfect. We all have our battles. The separation line is at free moral agency. It is at our choice.

I heard that song very little as a child (about 12) because rock music was banned in our house. I never planned on restricting my child’s music because of this however when my child was 3 she was singing a song I liked and those words coming out of her shocked me. So I switched what I listened to and lyrics were what determined my choice
Yes, all actions should have appropriate consequences the problem is the opinion of today held my many is what they do when young should not hurt their future. This is wrapped up with the belief that people have the right to be happy, not the right to strive for happiness.
Truth would have worked as a cure a generation ago but the left is ahead of us, they are teaching a compelling belief of types of truth, your truth and their truth and teaching both are correct, and thus diluting truth (and it is hard to explain that what they were taught was perspective not truth). They need to learn to think for themselves this must be taught at home through the lens of right and wrong.

Excellent words! True, Kathy! agree with you 95%. It is true to say that people have been taught that truths can be mingled with fictionalized elements and it is somehow still truth. It is true that many people are now strong believers in this religion of pleasure worship.
But…Truth has some powerful work hands. Deny it or ignore it for long and those work hands visit in overwhelming force.
Pretend that lethargy is just fine and you end up just broke.
Pretend that drugs a nutritious part of this balanced breakfast and you end up with meth mouth and a long distance relationship with everyone except your cellmate.
Pretend that rampant hyper-sexuality is merely an expression of human nature and should be celebrated. You wake up to an AIDs epidemic (circa 1980’s.
Pretend that your government is a limitless purveyor of goods and services and you get a ruthless police state with the power to take whatever it wants from whomever it desires.
These are only easy to ignore for a while. Then, truth is the looming leviathan. While a lie can be sold to masses, the truth is an individual experience. It will, at some point, meet everyone, individually, in an undeniable way.

I agree, but how far will this country fall, or how bad will their lives get before they see truth? As long as the fantasy can be kept up people will want to believe.

I do not mean to be a pessimist but I believe, at this point, the mask will have to fall away so completely that the left is in a state of full on totalitarianism before the lethargic, careless, good time American can be bothered to examine the truth.
They will see. I think it will be far too late to change that which is done but they will see.

Several have already hinted at or mentioned the answer.

Another has repeatedly objected.

God.

We have rejected God.

Some will find that answer simplistic or wrongheaded or even bigoted and hateful.

So be it. My God teaches me to love even them. Even those who hate my answer and may hate me for daring to mention it.

…and that makes all the difference.

Even those who reject Him are His children and, therefore, deserving of love and respect.

You’re wrong. Those who reject Him are not His children. They are His creation. To be a child of God means to believe in, trust in, put your whole faith in God; then you are part of the family of God and His child. It is available to all who will believe…”…who so ever will…” (free will, choice is ours.)

Moral values are taught and learned… you nailed the issue when you attached a timeline to the slow decay of our moral values… Are we not aware of the activities of those who deem themselves to be above us? The corruption of the education system… the indoctrination of our children …. the morally bankrupt quality of what passes as entertainment…. the vapid criminology of our elected officials… the blatant dishonesty of the news media… the assault on religion… etc ad nauseam….
My belief is that those who make the calls from behind the curtain are the remnants of ancient aristocracy wedded to the Robber Barron banker elites who would fancy themselves as the new nobility… without Noblesse Oblige…. If you truly wish to understand what the hell is going on, Follow The Money…. where the money goes, power flows…. if you doubt this, look up the bio’s of those who make the decisions, nothing but the spent sperm from long past glory… everyone who is in a key position is either a banker or an obscure noble… or they answer to one such. Power corrupts those deficient in moral integrity… and as long as we surrender our children to their tender mercies don’t expect things to get better any time soon.

Bill,
What society is lacking today is several things. And to fix the problem requires all of them. Replacing just one of these will not fix the problem they al must be implemented.
The problem with society stems largely from the male side. We have taken todays boys and convinced them that they are nothing more then broken girls. and there in lies the problem. We must stop this. I will list what needs to change.
1) Boys need a father who is a strong masculine man who is not scared to show affection for his wife (NOT girlfriend, life partner, or what ever. marriage and fidelity are essential)
2) Boys need to be left alone to fail, repeatedly.
3) Boys need to be left alone to explore and play soldier. This is natural and unstoppable. To repress this will only cause damage.
4) Boys need to be raise in the church, and taught to love and fear God.
5) Boys need to feel powerful and dangerous. They need to feel as if their life has purpose. Take them hiking and camping, Enroll them in Krav Maga or Brazilian Jujitsu, Being dangerous does not make you evil, it makes you prepared and strong.
If any of this is removed you will have a broken boy that will grow into a damaged hollow old man.

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”― Frederick Douglass

agreed. i would add that the ONLY way to save america is to stop the indoctrination of our boys by k12 public school man-hating hate-filled feminist teachers. 93% of teachers (and admin) are female one can logically guess what similar percentage are leftist evildoers? they are inculcating our girls with a sense of unwarranted (princess) privilege and destroying masculinity in boys as fast as they can feed then ritalin, soy, estrogen, title nine, revisionist history and misandry. mothers start the process…k12 teachers finish it off. by the time they hit eighteen american kids are a complete train wreck. sending boys to public school is tantamount to child abuse in today’s new age new world order of feminist ideology.
tally ho.

Bill, the research and questions you are looking for have already been identified. Niel Howe and William Strauss wrote “The Fourth Turning” in 1997 and predicted much of what is currently happening.
I believe what we are witnessing is a “Turning”. As we grow older, the values that we hold so dearly are not always present in the generations that follow. These younger generations were raised in a different world than we were and have a very different view of the world and the existing establishment.
Until I read this book I could not care less about history. After reading this book, I now see the importance of understanding it. By looking at generational cycles the authors found a repeating pattern that predicted much of the turmoil that we are experiencing right now.
I won’t give any spoilers, but if the authors are correct, I’m not sure there is a “cure” for what is happening. Having said that, I am not a defeatist. I just think where we are going as a country may not be what we expect.

Another couple tunes from that era that portended our current national dysphoria are Stephen Stills ” Love the one you’re with” the Guess who’s “Share the land”. The long march through the institutions.

  • There was a time, many years ago, when I believed that if I needed to enter a physical altercation with anyone, I had a chance to survive, maybe even win. At the same time I realized that if I needed to enter an altercation with ten people simultaneously, My chances would be greatly diminished. If there was a single opponent, even though they might be bigger, stronger etc. there was yet hope that through some clever thought/action I might level the playing field. I was an individual with courage and hope.
  • Today are youth taught, or do they think of themselves as individuals? Possess hope? Putting their initials on something may be a vestige of searching for individualism. But most of the youth seam to have very little hope. Their individuality is swimming in a cesspool of identity politics – groupism has smothered the individual.

It seams their hope if you can call it that, is for the group – the class of (fill in the blank) beings. All else is garbage for them.
Parents are nearly no more.

from the time they are old enough to walk american children are now pigeonholed into group think. blacks are repressed first and always. girls are victims first, last and that never stops their entire life. white boys are a problem, never part of a solution. personal accountability, personal responsibility and self-actualization are relics of a past long dead and forgotten.

on and on it goes. fubar.

The mural went from pristine to defaced over time. The first & second generation were taught and obeyed “good citizen” rules, if you will.
While the 1st group were being good citizens, the moral decay was starting in the next generations. So, the good citizens were next sprinkled with some “disregard” for rules, morals, etc. At some point there were more “selfish” new generations who disregard behavior, decorum, good citizen rules.
As Bill mentioned, the music, the movies, our leaders all changed slowly over time. Go back and listen/watch the older stuff. “Leave it to Beaver” versus “Real Housewives of New Jersey”, for example. Or the Righteous Brothers versus Eminem.
In earlier movies and TV no cussing or nudity was allowed. Nothing profane.
Our “entertainment” becomes our culture, morals, etc. It’s changing the culture by increments.
We should investigate WHO runs the music, movies, TV, Internet, social media, etc. that has such an impact on our culture (all over the world).
WHO are the owners, the money lenders, etc. We all know the 100’s of “news stations” are owned by 6 companies.
It’s been a long-term, incremental plan.
Make a list of all the owners, bankers who fund them, movie & music exec’s, and I’m quite sure a pattern will emerge.
We may not like what we discover, but discover we must. We may not like the solution, but our country (and many others) depends on it.
I’m not a conspiracy theorist (a CIA term BTW). I do see patterns though.

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” (John Adams, October 11, 1798.)

The people described above, for which the Constitution was created to govern, have become a minority in this country. Unless that changes, nothing else will.

i am convinced now that the majority, not all of course, of those who are controlling dc and many of the various states are anti-americans who see the country as evil and nefarious. their personal agendas will destroy this country as sure as that guy with three islamic names is running the show as we speak.
there is no way out. william wallace/maximus meridius no longer exist. even trump is willing to work within the corrupt GOP believing that is the conduit by which america can be saved from the machinations of the evil forces inside the oligarchy that now permeates throughout all levels of society.
how do we rid ourselves from the cancers of newsom, whitmer, cuomo, palosi, harris, biden, sharpton, waters, hirono, ocasio cortez, omar, tlaib, pressely, romney, abrams, sasse, murkowski, mcconnell, collins, mccain, chaney, soros and not least of all that guy with three islamic names?
every day i ask myself how the nation can survive these wickedly evil people when millions and tens of millions support their agendas. no answers.

I ask myself the same questions.
All these people expect we will continue to be law-abiding, bend the knee, good people.
They are counting on it and we are doing exactly as they predicted.
If a garden is full of poisonous snakes, how does one cultivate it?

True; then the problem to be solved is How.

With Trump, the Totalitarians faced extinction, so they did the unthinkable; unleashing chaos via biological, race, and psychological warfare. I see Individualism now in tactical retreat, readying vaccines for each, frustrated that they are not yet ready.

Until they are I continue to return here for the most important shot of the needed resolve.

Our problem is, as Mr. Oliva quoted from John Adams, the public, as a majority, may say they are Christian or perhaps Jewish, they are not serious about their religion. Most kids do not go to church. This is especially true in dense populations. Parents teaching kids the Golden Rule is a thing of the past. Until the current conditions are turned around, we will turn more and more toward socialistic ideas and loss of respect for the rule of law.

Jugular Joe—Trying to cut us off from our Bill of Rights oxygenated blood and belief in God. I neither love nor respect his actions. Discernment is key.

The inevitably rotten fruit of Progressivism: Human nature is not perfectible by regulation imposed by government experts; a society expectant of government dependence surrenders its ownership ethos; generations of mass immigration with little or counterproductive assimilation accomplishes its intended transformation from individual sovereignty to mass serfdom; a society beguiled by the lies that sins are liberation, virtue is vestigial, and theft is righteous has squandered its legacy of self-evident truths and justice; the vacuum left by abandoning the choice to love our neighbor inescapably reverts to the law of the jungle.

The brave (really just honorable and honest) Canadian pastor barking at these lame functionaries reminds one of another Good Shepherd who “did not allow [the demons] to speak”…the bureaucrat’s viewpoint is now as well known as it is irrelevant – no one needs to hear it, and the pastor did well not to let them get a word in edgewise.

I would love to see a new political party in this country. Call it the CPR party. Citizens for Personal Responsibility.. Live CPR, learn CPR, vote CPR. The best way to save the nation, take up the mantle of responsibility for yourself.

I just finished reading Vaclav Havel’s “The Power of the Powerless”. It’s sort of the anti-dote to the motto spouted in silicon valley: “Making the world a better place”. Havel in the ’60s, and Jordan Peterson more recently, emphasize the power of the individual who “lives in truth” as Havel phrases it – one who refuses to live a lie in order to get along. Both Havel and Peterson are fine examples of such people in the public sphere, where their influence has been profound, but the private sphere, which is their chief concern, needs them as well.
Which brings me back to the sociopaths of Silicon Valley who are determined to make the world a better place. No, that’s not how you do it.

From The Department of the Silver Lining: it is likely that The Black Death enabled Europe to get out of the Malthusian Trap it was in, or so say some historians who have a good grasp of economics.

Hi Jon, because the Black Death affected the poorest, and those in contact with the poorest, most, resulting in a severe lack of tradesmen in the aftermath. This created pressure for the educated sons of the wealthy to go into trades. The injection of intelligence and inventiveness into these practical fields raised productivity, eventually leading to the industrial revolution. Technical progress was the escape route, but it required getting the smart people interested in ‘low’ practical fields.
In other – more advanced – parts of the world, China for example, the smart people worked in government, studied the heavens looking for signs and portents, and other noble arts. The Europeans caught up and eventually left them in their dust.

The Godless Left (sorry to be redundant) is running the asylum, and many (most?) Christians have gone from being lions to sheep and won’t fight.

feminism. that’s not a cavalier bomb toss. it requires a lot of thought and dot connecting. good luck. it took me twenty years to connect all those dots. mostly because i was wasting my time playing inside the sandbox instead of stepping outside and organizing my own life.

Zo Rachel knows the answer. When people turn their back on God–at the very least His ethics even if they are not believers in His Son–we end up with people being their own gods and setting their own standards for behavior and attitudes toward others. And as is clear now and always has been, people’s self-set standards are a far cry from the ones set by God. He has set absolute standards because He absolutely knows what is right and He absolutely knows the human propensity to do what is wrong when not directed by Him. So we end up with destroyed murals and destroyed cities and destroyed lives.

Atheists live moral lives with standards of behavior that include ethics, generosity, compassion, sacrifice; all the things you think can only come from your god.

Am I immoral and without standards? Am I wrong about things of value? Am I selfish? Am I ignorant of right and wrong?
The majority of humans are theist. That would include the majority of the people who defaced murals, burned the cities last year, and murdered police. It includes the majority of people in prison.
Here’s a standard for you, one in your bible:
Genesis 19:1-11
19 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night sand wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
Later on, after your god burns an entire city of men, women, children, and animals alive, Lot goes on to get drunk with his daughters and they have sex with him. They must have been Jezebels from birth else Lot would not have felt so just in offering them to be gang raped to protect a couple angels.

These are the kinds of standards atheists are missing?

I reject your gods and your religions.

The bible is not a guide for moral behavior. It is not a standard for moral conduct.

Lot’s behavior here is not held up as an example of moral rectitude but rather, quite obviously, as the behavior of a real, terrified person facing down a murderous mob. That mob would happily kill Lot for the opportunity to gang rape his guests, so Lot acted out of panic (just as you would if you ever faced a truly life threatening situation). The bible isn’t a children’s story; it is a book about the reality of the human condition. It presents real people with their real flaws. If you are going to criticize something, you should at least understand it.

You should perhaps read Ben Franklin’s thoughts on the matter when a young atheist contacted him. You personally might have the sort of decency required to behave well without the notion of God. I would argue that many others, do not. You will probably also find that many of the principles you hold as moral came to you via a religious teaching, one that you implictly recongized as a good principle, but one where you rejected the notion divine inspriation behind it ( as is your right) as superfluous and irrelevant. Churches/Religions have always held the purview of moral education throughout history , and in the United States the separation of church and state deprived many of any such an education – even if they, as you did, would rejection the notions of divinity underlying it. It may also be of intertested to watch Jordan Peterson’s series on the Bible – so that you understand that susperstition is not the only compoent at play and that one is very unwise to dimiss a religious text as being worth nothing to a secular mind. Even if you reject divinity, those txts are still a collection of things that generation after generation felt it worth teaching to their kids, because those stories would help their children succeed and the civilization prosper as a practical concern – with or without God’s help. .

The British actor Lawrence Fox commented thus, about the new left:
“They are the god in their religion of one, and they absolve themselves from all sin.”

Ignorance is the bane of humanity. Eradicate ignorance, and you eradicate the problem.
By the way, this is all been planned for Long ago by Cecil Rhodes and company. Do you get it yet?

The Germans were some of the best educated people on the planet, and they started two world wars. Eradicating ignorance won’t fix this, although it sure would be nice if the public-school de-educated generations could hear and believe some truth.

Indeed. Knowledge, without the moral structure that is solely inherent in Christianity, only amounts to a culture which is more efficient in acts of moral decrepitude. For 2000 years, Christianity infiltrated all societies of Western Civilization to such an extent that even the hardest atheist was witlessly benefitting from the cultural order that the word of God had brought. We, as a culture have tossed it aside, and we casually wonder, whatever could the matter be?

Not sure that I understand your point. Are we talking about the same Christianity that lead to so much death and suffering across the breadth of human history?
The same moral righteousness that the catholic church has proven time and again that padre jelly-finger just needs to be moved to another parish, again…?

I used to consider myself a christian, but logic took hold, so now I am atheist. Deities never existed, nor do they exist now.

About the deities?
Yes.
Unless someone has figured out how to prove a negative, there is not one example of any human in all of history that has proven the existence of a deity.

1) One of the ways to success in creative arts is to see things in a new, different way, so that your song, picture, movie, whatever, stands out.
2) Radio and TV spread different memes into regions/neighborhoods/families far faster and in far more abundance than those “local” communities could counter with traditional family and community narratives.
3) When Nietzsche wrote, “God is dead,” he wasn’t proclaiming a personal reflection. He was noting that in Western civilization, the overarching belief in the mythos that was the basis for our morality and system of ethical conduct was gone.

So, painters, songwriters, story tellers (and demagogues and power seekers) know that audiences get off on twists – seeing things in a different way. Radio, TV and movies proliferate stories and ideas faster than human cultures are used to. The bedrock idea of a supreme (and mostly revered) authority saying, “Thous shalt not,” is gone.

So, what’s to stop little twists and new angles from becoming turned into heretofore nonsensical things like “Orange is the new pink?” What’s to stop the obvious notion that there exist some people in responsible positions who act irresponsibly from becoming, “All police are pigs?” What’s to stop a cautionary tale like The And and the Grasshopper from becoming “Easy Rider?”

Without a deeply embedded, discussable and relatable counterpoise, nihilism and post-modernism eat away at a culture because the culture itself no longer speaks against them with one voice – or any voice at all.

Down at the mural level, you didn’t used to scribble on a mural, or litter, or cut in line, or talk after being shushed in a theater, because people frowned on it. And if you kept doing it, more people were going to turn on you than the one person who originally said,”You shouldn’t do that.” And the reason that would happen is because the culture and its norms were founded on a mythos of personal responsibility that was decreed by GOD. And if even only 1 in 10 believed in the actual stories, almost everyone believed in the authority of the concept. After all, they could see the results in the civilization that surrounded them.

It’s not that we suddenly lost faith in the moral underpinnings found in religion. It’s that without being able to use religion as the delivery mechanism, we lost the ability to lend ab initio authority to the guidelines that mankind has learned lead to successful results over millenia.

I don’t need the emotional crutch of gods to be decent and moral and informed about reality. Gods are not the answer, never were. When a person looks to gods to fix life and the world then life and the world go to hell because no one is doing anything themselves.

You’re missing the point. And I said nothing about gods fixing life OR the world. Nor have I made any mention of a god as an emotional crutch. Though millions – billions? – have found inspiration in faith, I am not refering to that here.

The “God” Nietzsche and maybe even Aquinas was refering to was an abstract authority to embody and illuminate the shared wisdom of generation upon generation of leaned human moral behavior. It became “moral” because it worked and did not lead to destruction and misery (for the most part.)

As is alluded to elsewhere in these comments, one person’s morality passed onto another – even father to son – does not historically carry the weight to withstand determined amoral opposition. It takes a shared – communal – morality to withstand the onslaught of a horde. Religion was the vehicle for that shared storyline.

The mythos of religion in Western civilization has been a background story to illustrate what humans need to do in each others’ presence in order to get along and not destroy each other.

the reason that would happen is because the culture and its norms were founded on a mythos of personal responsibility that was decreed by GOD. “

You’re still missing the point. The very next sentence after the one you quoted refers to the stories and authority, so the moral message would carry weight.

If that wasn’t clear enough for you, it was spelled out in detail in the next post: “The “God” Nietzsche and maybe even Aquinas was refering to was an abstract authority to embody and illuminate the shared wisdom of generation upon generation of leaned human moral behavior.”

Nitpick all you want. It seems that at this point you’re merely being obtuse or childishly argumentative. I’ve wasted too much time trying to answer you already.

When much is given without being earned it is not valued. That which is not valued is not respected. Value can be earned through sacrifice, whether monetary, time & effort, or blood. Our father’s generation tried to pass on that message by their example. Somehow we have allowed that most important legacy to slip through our fingers and be drowned out by the maelstrom of negative media where nothing is respected. Now we have several generations that did not earn the gifts they were given and hence do not value those gifts, nor do they understand the great sacrifices that were required to acquire them. In this solipsistic world each man is his own God and any flaw within an idea discredits the whole thing.

The proliferate selfishness of so many who know only comfort and safety and abundance, such that they remain as children expecting to be always indulged, is a waste of the sacrifices of those who made that comfort and safety and abundance possible.

Add to the pot that decline of religion. And now it is not enough you be a non-believer, now you must attack religion and claim to be offended by its mere presence, wherher in words, images and statues. Tear it down, all of it.

Religion isn’t declining the religion of the left (The Spirit of the Age) is growing by leaps and bounds.

the more (faster?) females take over a religion…the quicker it evolves into a negative force that ruins civilizations.

Great point, that axiom can be applied to virtually any industry, not just religion.

no question about it grayson. actually, to be honest and all, i was making that point without really verbalizing it. i am thankful you took up the load. it needs to be stated although at this point i’m quite sure nothing can be done to slow the death by a thousand cuts to our once great constituional republic.
k12 has all but destroyed the alpha male can do build create engineer invent spirit and ethos of the once productive american white male. it remains to be seen what other demographic will take up the mantle. black males, black females, hispanic males and females, white females…..they had better get to it soon or america is toast says i.
respects my friend.

You are guilty of sexist bigotry. A failure of logic and reason. Some never equals any and all in anything. Have you been hurt by some woman in authority?

Religion is not all that and in no way a solution. Religion is part of the problem. Ask any gay person in Arabia, or their own women.

Here is the difference.
When a Muslim kills a Gay person or subjugates and rapes their wife, they are LIVING UP to the letter of their Holy Book as taught by their prophet.
When a Christian persecutes or even kills a gay person, they have FAILED and gone AGAINST the teachings of the Bible and Jesus.
Don’t even bother with quoting some part of the Old Testament. Dead argument. JESUS is the center of the teachings of the Bible. The rest of the book is context, history and if you want to argue the point on history – legends. And Jesus said to love everyone. He said nothing even close to “But not these people”.
Look up the term “abrogation” in regards to Islam. It’s incredibly important to understand this concept and it puts the entire Koran in perspective – short version – the later, violent xenophobic, anti-semitic and warlike teachings of Muhammed nullify the earlier peaceful verses. Armed with this knowledge, you can utterly annihilate the apologists of Islam.
And this is not to say a believer in Islam cannot be an honorable, peaceful person. But if they are – they are likely (in my opinion) that way in SPITE of their religion. Not because of it.
The Christian Bible could be argued to operate in the exact OPPOSITE manner. The God of the Old Testament is the lawful, inflexible God. But everything changes when Jesus takes our sin upon him and gives us all redemption, even if we don’t deserve it. If we act and live according to the principles of Jesus, then we are tolerant, peaceful people. Even to those who disobey other portions of the law laid down earlier.
I admit – I often fail to live up to those ideals. But the failure in itself is expected and tolerated as long as one keeps trying.
So no – not all religion is bad or at fault. Just the people are.

“Don’t even bother with quoting some part of the Old Testament.”
Why, because there is so much in it that is morally appalling and you can’t present an argument to support it?

You can not use a text to substantiate a belief and assert that belief as reality then say the text can’t be referenced. That is insanity.

What is crap? What is it you think I am supposed to know–according to you? What are you so afraid of?

I don’t speak crap. I am very careful in my choice of words so they convey my ideas as accurately as is possible. I see no value in lying while participating in these discussions.

Why am I here? Because I choose to be.
Is this some kind of exclusive club where only people who think like you and are like you are welcome? Explain yourself please.

Perhaps the answers to your mystery lie in between the lines of a recent comment thread I casually started on the Ewe Tubes [1]:

David Pimentel –   Wealth is often the product of individual greed, and greed begets an insatiable lust for more possessions at the expense of all things virtuous.

Chad xxxxxxx –   maybe, but I don’t think greed is necessarily lacking virtue. In reality it is beneficial to everyone, because of wealth creation. In the personal sense it could be bad of course.

David Pimentel –    @Chad perhaps our definitions of greed are significantly different. From my perspective, I believe you are conflating self-interest and greed, which are distinct in their characteristics. There is nothing virtuous about greed.

Chad xxxxxxx –    @David Pimentel No, you’re dead wrong, everything you have came about because someone could make money from it. I don’t think this even needs explanation.

Consider how quickly this brief discussion devolved from a friendly exchange of ideas into something like a playground scuffle. Also, consider the subtle contextual lines of disagreement:

  1. greed begets an insatiable lust for more
  2. maybe, but I don’t think greed is necessarily lacking virtue
  3. There is nothing virtuous about greed.
  4. No, you’re dead wrong.

There is a fundamental distinction here. I know that greed is NOT good. It is NOT virtuous. It, in fact is a perversion of healthy self-interest into something that pursues possessions at the expense of all else. However, a random individual named Chad on the internet believes the exact opposite of what I know to be fundamentally true.
I’ve often half-jokingly remarked that Hugh Hefner, with his hedonistic pursuits, was responsible for the decay of our society, but it’s deeper than one man. There exists within any individual human being immense potential for both good and evil — the latter is too often more attractive, pleasurable and self-inflating. We go about our lives screaming into the universe, demanding to be recognized and valued while simultaneously ignoring the fact that the universe does not care. The chaos of our collective existence must continually be fought against, but our collective of humanity has been corrupted with destructive, greedy behaviors that have metastasized into a cancerous moral rot, unrecognzable by its host.
There is no cure for such cancer. We must continue to irradiate it in order to keep it at bay.
Wow! That devolved into an esoteric metaphor rather quickly.

[1]: We are all sheep. In fact, many are emasculated, no longer to be called rams, just ewes.

Rush said it so well @ late 2012 or early 2013, “America can survive the re-election of Barack Obama. America can not survive a population that would re-elect Barack Obama”

I feel so sorry for Rush. In some ways I could wish he might’ve passed away just a bit earlier, so that he wouldn’t have to know for certain (as he must have just before the end) that his country was lost. At the same time, like the consummate entertainer he always was, he knew when to take his final bow. He words are still relevant. But mainly in showing us the America that should be and should have been. And maybe as a sign-post to show us the way back.
