Common-Sense vs. Constitution: Biden Gun Bill to Make America Safe for Criminals

Will Biden find enough support among Democrats to make America safe for criminals, or will a few still hew to the Constitution.

On Valentines Day, President Biden announced his support of “common-sense” gun laws that would ban “assault weapons” and “high-capacity” magazines, slap fees and fines on a wide variety of firearms, as well as make it easier to sue gun makers for the crimes of people who use their products illegally. Will Biden find enough support among Democrats to make America safe for criminals, or will a few still hew to the Constitution.

I had someone ask on Quora if conservatives had a viable plan to curb gun violence. My answer was to ask if leftists had a viable plan to curb gun violence.

Notice that 3 of the list of 10 are firearms. These were made by people while they were in prison. Presumably they were not allowed to have weapons, and I imagine that few people are under closer surveillance… and yet even under those conditions, people who wanted one were able to make firearms from scratch.
So no, “common sense gun reforms” don’t do anything to curb gun violence, never will, and in fact cannot. All they can accomplish is to curb the ability of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves against gun violence.
Okay, you don’t think I should be allowed to own a semi-automatic rifle? Okay, no problem. I’ll only own one rifle….
…an M67.

And it’s not a semi-automatic, it’s a single shot, no magazine at all.

Oh, I’m sure the bill in its totality is doomed, but they’ll likely get at least some of the low-hanging fruit to pass. Like Bill said, repeal of the Protection Of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act is one of the scarier possibilities – get rid of the gun industry, and the Second Amendment is gone within a generation.

I, like all living beings, have the unalienable right to live and to defend my life by any means equal to, or greater than, my aggressor. I have been endowed by my creator with this right. No person, no government, no social network may abridge my right to live, or my right to defend my life. Those who do, without my consent, become my aggressor – a threat to my life. If my aggressor has a bump stock, so shall I. If my aggressor has a full automatic weapon, so shall I. If my aggressor has tactical and combat armor, so shall I. If my aggressor has bombs and explosives, so shall I. If my aggressor has missiles and combat vehicles, so shall I. None of these items possess aggression, a will to harm, or a will to defend. Those characteristics lie with the men and women who hold and use them.
If you want a kinder, gentler world; address the aggressors, not the defenders

I’m old enough to remember and been involved in the “NRA Youth Marksmanship Program” in the 50’s that got kids over the age of 12 with their parent’s written consent to go to the local police pistol range on Saturdays and shoot .22 rifles at paper targets for 50 cents for 10 shots, all the while being instructed by Police and National Guardsmen on proper weapon and range safety. This was promoted by President Eisenhower in an attempt to keep the country’s youth ready for military service if needed. Keep in mind this was just after Korea and before the Vietnam debacle.

I’m sure this helped a lot of draftees survive Vietnam that might never have held a firearm before. I think the main reason the program died was that “with their parent’s written consent” clause.

Come to think of it, what is a firearm but a better and more efficient method of throwing stones? People will protect themselves any way possible. Those that expect to live anyway.

Let’s mess with their wokerati minds!!
One idea I have had is to promote a “Militia Preparedness Certification” program for the states. Some details yet to be defined or revised, but the core idea is to have the governors of each state certify that at least 50% of the militia age males and 25% of the militia age females* in their state can or have demonstrated periodic (preferably yearly) proficiency in selected weapons usage (legal education, training in mechanics, demonstrated firing range results, etc., to include at a minimum a handgun and a long gun of some suitable description. ) National Guard and law enforcement personnel can be included or counted “automatically” if their employment already includes such demonstration, but otherwise a suitable number of adults would be required to attend a several hour to all day event to achieve certification for themselves and thus for their state’s obligation.

The participants would not be required to provide their own weapon(s) but might be allowed to if their weapon(s) is (are) judged to be sufficiently equivalent to the state designated weapons. [In that case they would also be expected to provide their own ammo.]

We would have to come up with a suitable set of carrots and sticks to “encourage” the states to do this. I suspect in a wisely developed program the cost would be $50 to $100 per person per year.** Perhaps remove/ reduce Medicaid grants until certification is provided? Provide additional supportive grants specifically for this program? Any other ideas?

A lot of details to be defined and “objections” to be overcome, but it would be promoted as complying with the “militia” language of the 2nd Amendment and explicitly identified as required to prepare the population to resist an (foreign or domestic) tyranny that might develop (i.e., separate from any self defense criteria). And just think how unifying it would be: you are preparing to resist Trump tyranny or Biden tyranny, take your pick, but you are then prepared.

*If the women insist, we can raise the requirement for females to 50% as well.
**A four hour (private sector) class in legal issues and gun handling safety, with a 10 minute segment of actual shooting at a local range, cost us $50/person for a 20 person class. A more “mass production” process should be able to keep costs within that range even for a government run program.

I only have one personal problem with this idea. Why should I have to jump thru hoops to be certified for something I’ve done all my life?

Sue Chicago Cutlery for murder by steak knife…(mentioned by Bill)

“Public searchable database” was tried in New York, right? Results were bunch of homes burgled for firearms?

Going with Steve’s option B, they think they have it all locked in, and haven’t learned enough from the last three (though they might just be learning and adjusting, adapting and updating the machine).

The problem with this game that the Democrats play with this gun control routine, is the Republicans and how they deal with it. The Republicans always end up giving into a little of what the Democrats want, the Democrats knowing this can slowly eat away at our 2nd amendment rights. But it may be that we have a weapon to use against the Republicans to stop them. Threaten to bring Trump back in every time they look like they’re going to cave into the Democrats. It may even work with the Democrats.

Or maybe Biden announced on a Sunday BECAUSE a lot of Americans would not notice.
Don’t know about it, don’t rebel.
Don’t trust the RINO’s or other Rep’s in house or senate.
Neither of my “representatives” ever respond with anything more than a “template” thank you, then silence.

Point of Order, Stephen Green…

If you think that owning an Abrams Tank will allow you to drive on ice and snow, then you demonstrate a degree of naivete…

An Abrams on ICE is more like a 70-ton Hockey Puck… However, you might not have to worry about your vehicle much beyond scratching the paint…

So, you’re saying that it handles similar to a ’73 Olds Delta 88? My brother and I had some good times, growing up outside Chicago, sliding that beast sideways down the streets of our town…

I think this is distraction to get people talking while they do other things we don’t want.
Except for the registry. They really want that registry.
Bill – you have had firearms fall overboard, too, huh? Wow, small world.

Common practice of Negotiations: Demand the whole Bakery while expecting little more than half a loaf of bread.

The Left are artists at this… pressing for the most radical ideals and expecting the Vichy RINOs to “reach across the aisle” and compromise on the “more reasonable” infringements. This way, they continually “thin-slice” us over the edge to total confiscation.

Trump understood this. Prime example was “making Mexico pay for the wall”, making building it a foregone conclusion

Yeah. The lakes, rivers and other waterways are at risk of being filled with arms. I think that it’s past due to include the heads of many of these bastard politicians.

HR 127 would reverse the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) enacted in 2005 during the Bush (43) administration which prevents suing firearms manufacturers for misuse of their products by negligent or criminal people. This bill would also make it mandatory for you and everyone in your household and guests who may have access to any guns you own to undergo a psych evaluation. This makes the 1994 gun ban seem like it was a kid’s birthday party! Gotta stop this one folks!!

How do we stop it when contacting our rep’s gets no response or a canned letter but no follow-up?
Sorta like the election . . . we vote and they aren’t counted. (?)

I feel for you. I live in Orange County, CA. My Rep is Katie Porter.
Yes, THAT Katie Porter. The one with the sink full of moldy dishes that’s getting the vapors from Laurie Boebert’s AR-15 cosplay during a Zoom meeting.
I have about as much chance of convincing her to down-vote HR-127 as I do of convincing Bill to put flotation devices on his ordnance during boat trips!

HR 127 may be a distractor so that other, “less intrusive” anti-gun bills (e.g., HR 1004, 1005, universal background checks on ammo) will be contrasted to HR 127, and thereby be deemed “not so bad,” giving them a chance at passage. Watch for the legislative prestidigitation.

We must be vigilant and continue to publicly-reject ALL infringements upon out unalienable rights.

What happened to unity?

That disappeared when the Democrats Party “leaders” decided to publicly-adopt the tenets of Islam and declare that either submission or death of all the “unwashed infidels” is required.

The funny thing is they don’t realize they are pawns too. Useful idiots who will be “removed” after the REAL bosses take over.

Why shouldn’t Dems have any fear of losing the House in 2022? If 2020 taught them anything, there’s no reason for them to ever again lose any election that they don’t want to, thanks to what Biden* called the most extenive voter fraud operation in this country’s history

Exactly! Until we get these election laws tightened up and the process fixed, they’ll just keep pulling ballots out from under the table, or out of a closet, or from the trunk of someone’s car until they have enough to win. They’ll never lose again.
