Did COVID-19 Paycheck Protection Cash Go Only to Big Firms, Members of Congress?

The Washington Post story indicates much of the $660 billion COVID-19 Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) — cheap or free loans — went to big firms, Members of Congress and others who didn’t need it. Some 90,000 loans apparently produced no jobs, and 43 Planned Parenthood locations too the federal cash.

Did the Post suddenly realize that federal government redistribution schemes are rife with mismanagement and corruption?

It is tough…none of our business interests really lost any income and kept our one employee employeed, so I didn’t feel right taking the money, so we didn’t. But at the same time, feel like a chump because other also-open business owners in town did!

OK, two-pronged success story for this loan program.
Our church’s financial administrator completed the paperwork for a loan through this program. It enabled us to pay our staff, both full-time and part-time, and our utilities (we have no mortgage, though it would have helped with that) during a time when we were not allowed to have in person services. We went to on-line service and bible study. So while giving was of course down, many were laid off, we were able to continue our mission in some form.
I received a phone call one evening from one of the part-time staff who wanted to stop being paid since she was no longer performing her duties. I was able to explain to her why we were able to pay her and that this was not a hand out. So this loan did help us continue, and like Bill said, some people will try and do the right thing.

And I still remember being one of the very lonely voices saying that Dubya’s post 9/11 stimulus checks would have been better used paying down our national debt.

It’s a shame that Biden isn’t Presdient right now. I’m sure he would have managed this every bit as effective as he did Obama’s “stimulus” money

Couldn’t agree more, Steve. I beat that debt drum for years, until the 2012 presidential election. It was a national referendum on debt, and we lost. So now I’ll occasionally mention it but am not wasting time screaming when nobody is listening. Sadly, it will only get noticced when people start feeling real pain

Government programs are designed to “sound good but eventually to fail”. That way, the Government can claim not enough was done so as to justify doing more of the same on a larger scale. It too will be designed to “sound good but eventually to fail”. Rinse and repeat endlessly until the society so treated will fail catastrophically. THIS is the way of government since the time the first warlord took over the tribe and eventually delivered oblivion.

Why then do we expect Government to save us? We believe in magical thinking. We believe the soothing words from our leaders that the next program will make all things better. Eventually, we find out the reality of the situation is that too much Government IS the problem. We would have made out much better on our own but it is too late. We have lost our individual rights of Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness. Our Civilization has been spent into oblivion.
