I want to download videos from Youtube and other sources for personal use, im pretty sure thats legal as long as it is for a personal use. I wanted to ask a trusted source ( you guys) for what is the best and most trusted 3rd party source to download and edit videos. I just don’t want to download a bunch of malware or make a bad mistake as I dont know very much about this kind of stuff. I have an interest in learning some HTML and website designing and am looking for a good place to learn. I have heard of youtube-dl and screen recording, is either of these sufficient. I just want to save more permanent records of videos I like incase they are removed from youtube.

Downloading is an excellent idea, as I’ve seen many good videos removed and am glad I’ve saved copies of at least some of them. With the resurgence in deplatforming this seems likely to accelerate. I’ve used YTD (www.ytddownloader.com) on macOS (looks like there’s a Windows version too) for several years with generally good results. Sometimes it stalls (“jiggling the handle” by playing the video in a browser window often helps with this) and for some videos it fails, but those failures are often corrected by newer versions. (I suspect they’re in a constant arms race with YouTube changing their streaming mechanics to either make enhancements or try to deter this kind of thing.) I’m currently trying to get a copy of this 9/11 memorial video, but YTD is consistently failing on it. I’ll be interested to give some of the alternatives mentioned here a try, but YTD has done a pretty good job for me for the most part. Hope this helps!
I use savefrom.net and keepvid.works. I think the sites may have ads and things but I have all those blocked with ublock origin etc so I don’t see them.
Okay – don’t know why my previous attempt to give an answer got hung up as “awaiting approval”. Maybe it was the links?
So let me try this without the links. A DuckDuckGo search of these items will bring them up quickly anyway.
One good tool I use for video download is:
4K Video Downloader
It’s straightforward and easy to use. No confusion about the UI. Gets right to the point.
If you’re trying to keep bandwidth to a minimum or all you are interested in is music, then this next one will do nicely. Basically it’s the above tool – but stripped down even more:
4K Youtube to MP3
These have served well for my purposes.
