Friends,
Perhaps the concern about the Left’s seeming superiority in storytelling could be addressed by renewed appreciation for the traditional stories of Western culture, including fairy tales and mythology. It occurs to me that capitalism is resonant with The Round Table, a beautiful symbol of equality of opportunity. King Arthur wanted the table to be round to avoid disputes over rank. When he issued a challenge, individual knights would head out into the Forest of Adventure to seek their peculiar destinies. Whereas, a striking symbol of the devastating results of socialism, with its purported equality of outcome, is Procrustes’ Bed. Too short for the bed? We’ll just stretch you until you are long enough. Too tall? We’ll just lop off the excess bits. Jonathan Pageau’s website, the symbolicworld.com, is a refreshing reminder of the significance of symbol and story in interpreting the world.
Pax vobiscum,
Susan
