Food rationing has begun!

Grocery chain “Pick-N-Save (parent KROGER) has announced a 2 package limit on all meat purchases. Beef, pork, chicken are all limited to 2 packages with no discretion given to weight/size. We were told that this action was taken due to the Corvid pandemic.

Kroger said in the media that this is only happening in “select” stores. Like all of GEORGIA and WISCONSIN just to name 2 states.

A manager at the COLUMBUS WISCONSIN location said “time to stock up”! With a 2 package limit how the hell am I supposed to do that?  On top of this action, produce prices are on the rise here. And we are fortunate to continue to have an income. There are those who do not.

I was then aske to “please don’t horde”. I looked over at the meat case (and the large 2 limit sign). Too late. Most of the selection was gone. And I was only allowed 2 packages anyway. I wonder if the same rules apply to store management or their employees?

What happened to the flattened curve? Must have flattened all the meat too!

This has been happening locally for me (SW VA) for over a month. It was not due to any dictate from Kroger parent, but rather people hoarding items and not having meat on the shelves. The local store managers did it so they could serve their customers. Since they started it over a month ago, it has been an easy adjustment. And it is not 2 items total, mostly the large quantity packaged chicken. Really hasn’t had an impact on us. But I like to cook with fresh produce so we go to the store twice a week anyway.

Now the price impact, yea, that bites. Especially the alcohol.

With us it is 2 packages as a limit. They also have the smallest chicken section I have ever seen in a supermarket, even in good times. I guess they can get away with it being the only grocery store within 10 miles.

My wife brought up one of those delivery services the other day, butcher box or one of the others. We are thinking about it and weighing cost vs availability.

So much for that idea….

I do Butcher Box…
The thing with them is that it is grass-fed, organic, yada yada.
It makes sense that they would be running short, if more and more people are going towards them and they have a limited supply of this type meat.
It’s good quality meats, makes sense that they couldn’t live up to their expansion in business!

Grace, is it worth the price? I can get good meats at Fresh Market, which is already a price step above Kroger. Is Butcher Box worth the mark up above that?

Gene, thanks for checking.

I think so, but…
You are paying more, because it is organic, that already makes it more pricey – but better quality.
Also, the deficiency of the process is that you get a already defined set of meat, I do chicken/pork/beef. You don’t get to pick and chose like a grocery store. There are add ons, of course, that you can chose to add, but those are extra.
You can also chose how often you receive the box, monthly, bi-monthly, or even longer.
It comes well-frozen, insulated, dry ice, so that is also good. Many items I just put right in my freezer…
