Sevier County, TN, Commissioner Warren Hurst calls Pete Buttigieg’s presidential candidacy “as ugly as you can get” because Mayor Pete is “a queer”. Hurst was making an argument about his county becoming a gun sanctuary, but has drawn national protest and ridicule for his broader comments about society, Democrats, homosexuality, and the waning rights of white men. Will Progressive free speech advocates stand up for Hurst’s right to offend? Should elected officials be held to a stricter Constitutional speech standard? Did Hurst scuttle his case by spouting his controversial views?

It is Commissioner Warren Hurst 1st amendment protected right to say anything he wants and it is my right not to listen to nor care what he has to say.
One of the defining characteristics of being a free American is the ability to give the finger to any social or governmental group you want to in terms of free speech. He can say whatever he wants. Wisdom may or may not have anything to do with it. What he can’t do is violate anyone’s Constitutional rights. Short of that, he can say whatever he feels. That’s how it works. Whether I like a comment or not, when dealing with any American, and especially an elected official, I’ll take an honest opinion over a tactful lie any day of the week.
I would not be surprised to discover that this is a trap. At the next county election the left will throw all their resources at him, legally and illegally. The Sevier County Election Commission maybe gearing up to catch election cheats with Warren Hurst putting him self out in the open as bait.
Sounds like a brilliant plan, I hope it comes off with a dozen indictments!
Sorry, “Progressive” and “free speech advocates” together in a sentance is an oxymoron.
I think you just need to reverse “Progressive” and “free speech advocates” in your sentence to line up properly with oxy and moron:)
Just as Rudyard Kipling’s “Ballad of East and West” starts with “Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet” the same can be said for morals and ethics: “Oh, morals are morals, and ethics are ethics, and never the twain shall meet.” Morals are as far away from ethics as east is from west. It’s a good thing it’s called the “House ‘Ethics’ Committee.” Because, if it was called the “House ‘Morals’ Committee” Katie Hill would be in deep do-do, because morals are as far away from ethics as east is from west. Bisexuality, divorce and “throuples” are fine by today’s ethical standards, but pronouncing homosexual behavior as “ugly” is unethical because it’s hateful! Morals came from God and ethics come from men. Morals are universal absolutes that are true yesterday, today and forever, and ethics are as shifting sand, relative to fickle, fallible, finite men. So, unless someone is willing to go out on the limb of morality, they need to keep their “jackass” mouth shut.
I’m from Tennessee.
I agree the statement is rude and crass and like Bill, I don’t agree. What I really do wonder is if all the people who are really bent out of shape are equally concerned about the ugly slurs and and out right slanderous lies that are daily directed at President Trump by the media and other elected officials. If not, I really don’t care what anyone’s opinion about his statement is, as I am sure they don’t care what mine is. As we used to say about most opinions back in “the day”, that and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee (coffee was a quarter).
If someone calls me a racist, then I call him a f***ing idiot. Two assertions without proof; end of conversation. However, all opinions are revealed.
When you grab by the b*lls instead of winning hearts and minds you run the risk of the “grabbees” lashing out.
While I agree with Bill (again), the real reason that this is international “news” is that the Left wants it to be so. Remember; a gatekeeper not only decides what to prevent from crossing the path it also decides what is permitted to pass, and once past, how loudly to communicate it.
