Freed from History: Boston Mayor Backs Petition to Take Down Emancipation Memorial

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh backs petition to take down the Emancipation Memorial (also called the Freedman’s Memorial) in Park Square. It’s a statue commemorating President Abraham Lincoln issuing the proclamation that freed Black people from bondage.

Tory Bullock, the young man who started the petition, notes the posture of the freed slave in the public art work: “I would always ask myself, ‘If he’s free, why is he still on his knees?’ No kid should have to ask themselves that question anymore.”

On this Juneteenth, Stephen Green helps Mr. Bullock see the statue for what it is, as the men of Right Angle try to prevent all Americans from being freed from history.

Steve, your close covered what I intended to comment. I can see the movement in the freed man’s pose, and it saddens me that the younger generations have never learned to see beyond the starting point.

History encompasses The Good, thee Bad and the Ugly. Simply because one does not agree with History, therefore, you are not automatically given the “right” to rewrite it, DENY it and/or fabricate it.

I will never forget a story in the news (after obama was elected) that a Muslim Imam in a school in the eastern US was rewriting and defacing our history. An American history he wrote involved 2 native Muslim indians being the first ones to greet the Pilgrims when they came to these shores. If I remember correctly one was named Abdul Rahman. I am not kidding. I wasn’t laughing then and I am not laughing now.

The past was never meant to be a hitching post as was pointed out by Bill. Do all those who are defacing, tearing down statues and demanding they be removed have nothing else in their lives except destruction, hatred and violence? If so then they are indeed hopelessly spiritually and mentally deformed and not fit to be citizens of a civil society.

America’s leadership is becoming like France; appeasing surrender monkeys. But in a stunning reversal, Macron is refusing to let France’s monuments be torn down. Go figure.
Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so too is offensiveness. Slobs project slovenliness onto whatever they see. Fascists project fascism onto whatever they see. This is the strong delusion that God sent “that they should believe a lie.”

Pretty sad when France is the one leading the way in refusing to countenance the destruction of statues and monuments, even calling it by its correct name of “destroying history.”

This seems to tie into the personal truth, relative truth and the view of art that says “what I see is more important than what the artist says”. As Steve pointed out, there is a story in the statue and it is sad this young man cannot read it, nor can he have anyone read it to him. It is even sadder that the mayor was so quick to wave his virtue and waive his leadership, that he did not have someone from a neglected history department or some art museum provide the story of the statue.

I was appalled when yesterday Lord Newsom removed the statue of Columbus and Queen Isabella from the Capitol rotunda in Sacramento. He was proud of it too. Not only that they want to replace Christopher Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. I was so happy to see you guys telling it like it is. Thanks to all of you!

Two points:

  1. Maybe it is me, but looking at the picture of the statue on today’s R/L display shows a view that is slightly more front facing towards Lincoln, while the view shown about 40 seconds before the end by Steve shows a view slightly more directly facing the crouched former slave. The latter view better shows Steve’s point about a man getting ready to rise, or in the process of rising. Interesting that such a slight change in viewing angle can have such a strong impact on interpretation.
  2. Lionell, I guess the rules say I can/ should only give you one thumbs up per viewer, but when you said “…require they face the reality they have worked so long to deny. It is face reality and work with it as it is or die.” it was an alternative version of my strong belief that “our path to Liberty requires that we face Reality and accept Responsibility” for what we find.

BWDC is helping us to do that, and today’s R/L is one of the better sessions the guys have presented, so thanks again Bill, Steve, and Scott (and team behind the curtain).

Brilliant presentation. Steve, thanks for the comments on the deeper meaning of the statue’s composition. Great ending to the discussion guys.

Isn’t that special. Our gallant SJW’s today know more about slavery over 150 years ago that the actual slaves who lived it. This is so tiring. I would like to see legislation proposed that say NO monuments can be put up using tax dollars. If someone wants a statue or any other monument it would need to be paid for by private funds and voted in. At lease when the malcontents are allowed to either tear it down, smash it, remove it, burn it or whatever, it did not waste tax money.

The destruction of statues seems to be The Radical Left’s attempt at creating a “year zero” that they were unable to under Obama

There was a canary in the coal mine in Obama’s time. When he had the bust of Churchill removed from the Oval Office.

Without full context, all things can be destroyed.
The point of the protesting thugs is destruction. They have no concept of building anything. They equate the power to destroy superior to the power to build. After everything worth having has been destroyed, there is nothing left. After which the thugs will cry “We didn’t mean for this to happen.”

Yes they did. It is not so much that they want to live at other’s expense, they want all others to die. They want others to die with maximum agony. After which they will die as sniveling cowards when they face their own death they so long wished, planned, and worked for. “But..but..but….”

May they live forever in the hell they are trying to force upon the rest of us. We don’t need them. They need us. Give them NOTHING! Do not permit them taking anything. Leave them to their own devices and require they face the reality they have worked so long to deny. It is face reality and work with it as it is or die.
