When the chancellor of Germany and head of Poland think America has something wrong with its social media control, maybe folks on the left should take heed. Now I haven’t agreed with Angela Merkel on pretty much anything she’s done, but as someone who grew up in East Germany she knows firsthand the power of State control over speech and thought. And Poland has proposed the ability for citizens to petition a court with jurisdiction over social media to have accounts and writings reinstated with potential penalities of up to €1.8MM Euros. I haven’t read the actual bill/proposal, but the irony when Germany and Poland are lecturing us on freedom of speech is palpable.
