Hydroxychloroquine and Zinc – More Studies than just Dr. Zelenko

In response to Orange Pill Bad today, I made a comment but thought it better as a blog post.

Bill mentioned that the  message from Kern County (CA) doctors about the clinics being underused to the point of closing, was basically ‘disappeared’,  and that President Trump taking Hydroxy as a preventative ran counter to the narrative.

As Bill said so well, so many years ago, “these people ran counter to the narrative and they must be silenced” Just last night I watched that Afterburner about the origins of Political Correctness – from what, 2009?

Bill is also right about Hydroxy being useless without the zinc, which is the active ‘ingredient’ in the mix. I agree, and we’re not alone in this belief.

On May 8 th, 2020, Doctors Philip Carlucci, Tania Ahuja, Christopher M Petrilli, Harish Rajagopalan, Simon Jones, Joseph Rahimian have penned a medical document and published on MedRxiv, a website which self describes as “free online archive and distribution server for complete but unpublished manuscripts in the medical, clinical, and related health sciences.” These 6 doctors are from NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Here’s the title: Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin plus zinc vs hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin alone: outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Here’s their conclusion: Conclusion: This study provides the first in vivo evidence that zinc sulfate in combination with hydroxychloroquine may play a role in therapeutic management for COVID-19.

Here is the link:

I understand some don’t like links, so here’s the basic text of their study.

Background: COVID-19 has rapidly emerged as a pandemic infection that has caused significant mortality and economic losses. Potential therapies and means of prophylaxis against COVID-19 are urgently needed to combat this novel infection. As a result of in vitro evidence suggesting zinc sulfate may be efficacious against COVID-19, our hospitals began using zinc sulfate as add-on therapy to hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. We performed a retrospective observational study to compare hospital outcomes among patients who received hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin plus zinc versus hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin alone. Methods: Data was collected from electronic medical records for all patients being treated with admission dates ranging from March 2, 2020 through April 5, 2020. Initial clinical characteristics on presentation, medications given during the hospitalization, and hospital outcomes were recorded. Patients in the study were excluded if they were treated with other investigational medications. Results: The addition of zinc sulfate did not impact the length of hospitalization, duration of ventilation, or ICU duration. In univariate analyses, zinc sulfate increased the frequency of patients being discharged home, and decreased the need for ventilation, admission to the ICU, and mortality or transfer to hospice for patients who were never admitted to the ICU. After adjusting for the time at which zinc sulfate was added to our protocol, an increased frequency of being discharged home (OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.12-2.09) reduction in mortality or transfer to hospice remained significant (OR 0.449, 95% CI 0.271-0.744). Conclusion: This study provides the first in vivo evidence that zinc sulfate in combination with hydroxychloroquine may play a role in therapeutic management for COVID-19.

My back story. I have a graduate degree in Pharmacology. It is an all but the thesis PhD. I bailed because I could not withstand two to three years of post doctoral penury. Also, I wanted to be involved with molecular/physical pharmacology. Rather than continue, I became a Biomedical Engineer, discovered the power of computers, and jumped with both feet into Software Engineering.

I had long been vulnerable to the ravages of the common flu. I soon discovered that I could shorten my time of suffering and the usually associated bronchial pneumonia by taking large doses of Vitamin C, Garlic, and Zink. This I was not at all surprised that Hydroxychloroquine, Zink, and Azithromycin was more effective than when Zink was omitted.

I also knew that ALL drugs have side effects and that how bad the side effects are depended greatly upon the condition of the person taking the drug. In a word: Idiosyncratic. For example, Aspirin is recognized as a very safe drug and has been for a very long time. Yet, deaths have occurred from the taking of a single dose. Hence, taking ANY drug has risks. The point is does the likely benefits exceed the probable risk and by what margin?

Hydroxychloroquine is a long accepted as safe drug and has been safely used for treatment of various conditions. Yet, like Aspirin, there is a finite risk. If, in the opinion of yourself AND your medical consultants, the benefits exceed the risk, you should have the freedom to take it in spite of the whims of the FDA. After all, you are an adult and it is your life and your risk take. That should be quite enough. I simply suggest that you make your choices wisely with full knowledge of the possible consequences: both good and bad.

The government and the FDA want to treat you as a willful 6 year old and dictate what you can and cannot do. They presume the power to punish you if you don’t obey their whims. I object Intellectually, Philosophically, Morally, and Politically. The power they presume is totally and completely illegitimate.

I shall call you “All but the Thesis Dr. Lionell”. What a great comment and now I will read each of your posts with much greater care and interest!

I have been researching these new antiviral therapies (including HCQ) in some detail and want to report but I’m just too dang tired.

And THAT, Laura, is why I joined into a community (BWDC), to help carry the load when others are dang tired. I read all your posts on this subject and they are very informative.
