Why do people support underdogs? …. is it because they have made a moral assessment of the situation and come to the conclusion that the underdog is the moral side? sigh, no.
We humans decide things based on how we ‘feel’, not what we think. Our conscious mind is merely a mechanism to justify the decision our subconscious has already made. (you, you do that too, whether you want to believe it or not)
So what are the underlying drivers of the emotional decision to support ‘the underdog’?
While there are occasions when other factors influence the decision, the reflexive position of progressives to always support any underdog, is an instinctual strategy we evolved when we were living in tribes like chimps (who display this exact behavior).
When a tribal individual is trying to overthrow their tribal alpha, they will often find common cause with other lower individuals so they can either form a team to take power, or simply exploit the conflict they encourage between the underdog and the alpha, so they can take over when the others are weakened.
While the left will have all sorts of intellectual justifications for supporting hamas or other groups they see as being opposed to ‘the alpha’ (a pseudo alpha they call ‘the patriarchy’, ‘western hegemony’ or whatever their target is), the reality is, their behavior is nothing other than the most base, selfish instinct we evolved on the plains of Africa. The fact that the left, through the exploitation of the LGBT community, ally themselves with muslim groups who believe it their religious duty to kill gays, highlights that the position of the left is not one based on a reasoned assessment.
The left support underdogs as it is an evolved strategy to gain power in order to overthrow the established power structures. … it is not a ‘moral cause’, it is nothing more that a strategy to gain power.
Just as those who will not laugh with you are a threat to you, those who ally with those who attack the social structure you are a part of, would be willing to use violence against you, in order to gain power over you.
