I saw an article recently (I thought at NRO but I can’t find it again now) where the argument was that we should not settle for a debate bar where Joe just manages to appear sane and cogent. The point was we are talking about two people contesting for President of the United States and our bar for debate performance ought to be reasonably high. Decent command of the issues and personalities, even if not of all salient details; sane explication of your policy positions and why the opponent’s views are deeply flawed or not possible; past experience and accomplishments relevant to this position; etc.
If what we are looking for and expecting is high enough, I wouldn’t have any problems with the candidates using notes, having access to the questions ahead of time (all the moderators are for is to make it info-tainment with gotcha questions rather than serious political discussion), and even having access to ear piece assistance from assistants on particular points, etc.
Trump has a decent story to tell but he also ought to do some preparation to tell it rather than expect to be facing an idiot or mental defective. His moves on the 1776 education program and his EO on removing critical race theory type sessions across the federal government executive branch are good things to emphasize, for example.
I don’t think either one of them should have crib notes, cheat sheets, ear buds with aids whispering answers to them, teleprompters or any of that so I respectfully disagree with you
It’s not at all unreasonable, in my never humble opinion, to expect someone who wants to lead the free world and the most powerful, richest nation ever devised by mankind — To know his policy positions by heart and to be able to think on his feet so as to present his case in a convincing manner. That’s the whole purpose of debates. If we’re going to have policy wonks and fact checkers behind the scenes feeding information to the candidates as they stand there … That’s not even a debate, that’s just another episode of The Five on Fox News.
Now, having said that, I think that having multiple sources of information in front of him would be an advantage to Trump because he’d have someone pumping him zingers and a disadvantage to Joe because if ol’ slow, sleepy, creepy Joe is as deteriorated as he appears to be he’ll become confused and overwhelmed trying to sift through it all and get his tongue untangled long enough to apply it.
Still, I prefer an old fashioned, knock down, drag out fight between the two candidates. Flat footed, unaided, and from the heart … Not from some college kid who thinks faster (and likely clearer) than Joe Biden does.
I have friends coming over for the Presidential Debates. I have a professional, theater grade popcorn machine. I’m going to be heartbroken if Joe wiggles out of this somehow and we don’t get to watch Donald J. Trump exsanguinate then eviscerate Joe Biden in front of the nation.
That will be devastating but …
Not showing up for the debate, for any reason plausible or not, will be the last nail in the coffin that is Joe’s campaign.
Did you perhaps forget drawing and quartering, crucifixion, stake burning, or Guillotining?
If you bought your machine from Amazon or Costco you can probably get your money back if necessary. Or put it into storage for 2024, although by then debates and political contests in general may be merely proforma for the Democrat Party.

Have they set the rules? How long is very important. And what time at night. The longer and later the better for Trump.
There is one scenario I can see where the debates may seem somewhat of an opportunity for the Dems, and so they will come out and try to make it happen. If they can get Joe to stand up and seem calm and competent for the required time, and feed President Trump some lines that will send him off on a typical Tweet rant, then they may pick up some favorable sound bites they can use out of context to make the President look bad in the media …. which is really what it is all about leading up to the election!

So many possible scenarios, but I actually hope for a debate. Get your popcorn and a cool frosty beer ready! That is, if these fools rea;;y ;et Biden get on the stage with Trump. I can imagine all manner of excuses from the puppet masters why their puppet cannot attend, we will see!
How much can they drug him up? Amphetamines can help with dementia clarity… for a time.
That’s true, but amphetamines or Ritalin (which is probably what they would use) can give a guy Joe’s age a heart attack pretty easily too. Joe having a heart attack on national TV would pretty much end the contest right then and there.
I don’t know if there are any other drugs that will help in masking dementia.
If they use a stimulant it will at the very least be likely to cause Joe to have muscle tremors, even enough coffee can do that. Then Trump will hoot at his rallies about scaring Joe so bad he was shaking.
My debate fantasy is more along the lines of Joe gets so confused and inarticulate that Trump calls for Jill to come out and ends the debate, telling them to stop the cameras.

I actually didn’t mean it to be funny. I think it would be very sad. But it would also be definitive, showing the American people how unscrupulous the Democrats are. It would make it extremely clear that it’s really Harris who’s at the top of the ticket.
The only question here is how far gone Joe really is. It’s possible he’s faking it a bit, trying to trap Trump into complacency or something. If he’s not faking it, and he is getting worse, then something like that is bound to happen. I have no doubt that Trump will be magnanimous in such a situation.
I suspect that Dr. Mrs. Biden has a lot to answer for, although we can only guess at any of her motives or issues. Perhaps marital love even to the point of “Joe has wanted this for so long so badly that ….”
I presume she no longer practices medicine, whatever her specialty was.
She is not a medical doctor, she is a Ph.D. in something useless like education.

I predict something at the last minute that prevents “face to face” debate (covid-19?) and that Biden offers a “virtual debate” which Trump will refuse, making him the bad guy!!
That could be a scenario but I doubt that Trump’s people would outright refuse. Instead they would use the fact that Joe is now known to use notes and a teleprompter for coaching and say …
“That’s fine. Each candidate has to be shown in a room with nothing else but cameras in it and from several angles so we can be certain neither candidate is cheating. The other side gets to control which cameras are active and each will have an observer at the other’s location to prevent any question of the validity and authenticity of the debates.”
Which would put that ball back in the Democrat’s court. If they refuse, it’s proof they intended to cheat.
The only way Joe can wiggle out of this is to flat out refuse to debate at all, which will look very, very bad for him.
