Looking at a Black Hole

Scientists are on the verge of releasing the first direct images of a black hole.  This is something that is very Stratolounger friendly.  I hope the images are intriguing, but I noticed that that they are cautioning that the pictures would not be “in high resolution”.

Yeah, it’s not a bad photo at all when you consider the scale of the achievement.

I thought about posting on that subject, but the fact is that the observations aren’t going to yield much of anything that looks like an image. The general publicke is led quite astray by all the fancy graphics. A scientist familiar with the subject can look at a normal picture with three pixels in unexpected places and get very excited, but it goes right over Joe and Jenny Barcalounger’s heads.

The fact is, if you are close enough to a black hole to get the kinds of pictures that artists think look, well, like a black hole you are in the process of getting sucked in and nobody else is going to see it anyway.
