I was thinking about my time in the Army recently and the music I was listening to then; the awful Clinton administration was just ending and I had just found an amazing album from one of my favorite metal/hardcore bands from my youth – Method of Destruction (M.O.D. ). Metal music had saved my life in 1993; I had listened to it almost religiously from my youth, through my teens, and into adulthood, through drug, alcohol, and sex addiction that nearly killed me. By the grace of God I heard what I call “Prophets of Doom,” metal musicians who sang of life and death (lots of death) and all that fills in the space between the dates of our birth and death. Bands like Megadeth, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains, W.A.S.P., and M.O.D. wrote lyrics that focused on heavy issues like: God, Satan, heaven, hell, cancer, death camps, corruption, and much more that made their fans ponder their place in the world, and ultimately their own mortality. Interestingly in 1983 the band, Iron Maiden, wrote a song called “Revelations,” that was about the biblical book of Revelation, and I read it after hearing the song. The book set me on a path that ultimately led me to come to faith in Jesus Christ years later, but the time in between was thrilling, terrifying, and tragic, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything – listening to the Prophets of Doom, after reading Revelation, and walking into a dark wilderness of pain and suffering, brought me to the throne of God and saved me. Many people think that metal music is purely Satanic and should be avoided at all costs, but if you listen closely and heed the warnings of many in the genre, you hear stories of redemption and much wisdom, along with some really great music. Many in the metal world are also believers now, including Alice Cooper, Dave Mustaine, and Blackie Lawless.
Anyway, on to the lyrics/music:
Taken from the M.O.D. album – “Dictated Aggression” (1996). Billy Milano wrote these lyrics in response to the dirtbag in chief at the time, Bill Clinton.
“Silence Your Sin” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqxhMyQiIM8&t=144s
I choked on a piece of the American Dream.
The taste of blood, apple pie.
Scars and stripes, was enough to make me scream.
I cried as a piece of the rock went south.
It crossed the border at half past twelve.
Thanks to that dick, in the white house.
Speak with your heart.
With your heart you will pay.
Think your own thoughts.
Your rights are cast away.
Fit in the mold, then you get to plant your seed.
But…silence your sin.
I wipe my tears as I gaze at the red, white and blue.
I think of God and of family pride who were sacrificed, for shit like you.
It burns, to watch your flag, go in flames.
I see the fire burning up, from Thunderbird.
And people haze.
“In My Shoes” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqxhMyQiIM8&t=1483s
You’ll know what I’m saying. When you walk in my shoes.
You’ll know what I’m saying. When you walk in my shoes.
Equal rights, don’t apply. Quota calls, aren’t civil rights.
Split the vote, split the state. Split the house, income rape.
Doors are shut, need not apply. There’s no one here to fight for my rights.
Walk the straight line. Left then the right. I live the injustice.
Of liberal insight. Motor vote, I say motorhead.
I work a job, I don’t lay in bed. Payed my dues, pay my way.
I earned the right too have my say. I’m sick to death, of liberal views.
The liberal fools are fucking you too. You’ll know what I’m saying.
When you walk in my shoes.
One reply on “Lyrics from a Great American – Billy Milano.”
I always fely that Billy’s finest political commentary came in that ballad we all know so well- “F*** the Middle East”
