When does human life begin? That is a Religious question. I, perhaps obviously, don’t think human life begins when the sperm fertilizes the egg. So far, looks like everyone else commenting here believes life begins at conception.
Some religions say fertilization=start of life. My mom had 5-6 miscarriages between my birth and my brother’s birth (I don’t know the exact number since she only talked about it once, and it was long ago in my memory). Nature said that life does Not begin with conception, 5 or 6 times in my family. Actually, many fetuses are aborted, by Nature, before the woman even knows she was pregnant. So, Death of a potential baby (ie fetus) occurs All the Time.
So where do I draw the “when does human life begin” line? I believe life begins when: a) baby does not require life support, OR b) parents (or the co-religious, or the insurance company), are willing to pay for the post-birth life support. Just so you know, I was born with a birth defect that would kill me. My parents (and their insurance) were willing to pay for the operation that fixed my birth defect. I was operated on at about 2 weeks old, I think. They wanted the baby, me, to live if it all possible.
But I don’t require that want to be Forced on any mother if she does not want it. I won’t force my beliefs on anyone; likewise, I refuse to let others force their religious beliefs on me. Thus, I support abortion.
This is, of course, in addition to the other limits I expressed in my previous post here on 5/12/22.
The beginning of human life is not a Religious question. It is scientific. If a cell is dividing, it is alive. Dead cells do not divide. At fertilization, the cells start to divide meaning its alive. Also at that time, barring flawed sperm or egg, all the DNA making the embryo human is present. But not before. It just takes time and nutrition. As do babies from birth to when they can feed themselves. As to your needing life support, I assume you mean provided by the pregnant woman. This keeps getting earlier an earlier, as technology can provide earlier. What happens if, and I would not be suprised, when an artificial womb that works from fertilization to full term? Of course, miscarriages heppen. That is nature, not human intervention. It can be a flawed fetus, something wrong with the woman’s body, envirinmental, etc., but natural. The fetus dies. Non living things can’t die by definition. So still living and human until death. Now the question is, what rights do the unborn have vs the woman? Does a living human being have any rights in the womb, including the most basic; the right to live? If not, why not? Does the woman have the right to kill a living human being because they don’t want it? Even if its just inconvenient? My neighbor runs her leaf blower at inconvenient times, but I can’t kill her for it. Barring rape, the woman chose to have sex. And yes, if the fetus puts the woman’s life in danger, abortion is valid. Its self defence. But its very rare.

Your side is the one that does the banning and refuses to have conversations on the assumption that only your side of the conversation is allowed to be heard. I really doubt you will be banned unless you act like an obnoxious twit or harass other members.
My feelings about this topic evolved as I matured. It saddens me when I hear the phrase “unwanted baby”. My opinion is that very few people actually have “enough money” to have a baby when they get pregnant. Most of the arguments made seem to arise from a life in a vacuum, with no familial, church, or community support, which indeed is a poor life. And defining the child of an unwed mother as having “bad heaped upon him” is rarely true in my experience. Every life is a true miracle.
That said, I appreciate your post for helping me think about the other side. You are always welcomed to voice your opinion here in my view, even if you might think that this is just another echo chamber.
You only see death as a solution for birth control or an unwanted pregnancy. That is a narrow point of view. I should not have to state the obvious alternatives but do you even consider them? Not in your post. I will not vote or encourage your banning for I want the world to know that people like you exist.
Some comments: Was the woman raped? Still a human being in the womb. Did the birth control fail? Still a human being in the womb. Does the human in the womb put the woman’s life in danger? If so, self defense. No problem with abortion there. But that is extremely rare. How about giving up for adoption? Pregnancy too expensive? How about financial help? Baby would be severely disabled? I know of several people who would adopt anyway. I know a single woman (Christian) who adopted a 14 year old with severe cerebral palsy in a wheelchair, on a respirator, who likely would not live more than a couple of years. Lost track of her, don’t know result. But knowing her, when he died, if she was able, would do it again.
The left is not reluctantly allowing this procedure as an unfortunate necessity (safe, legal and rare) like appendectomies or tooth removal. They are celebrating it as a positive good!
Will you grant us that we realize how unfortunate and tragic it is that people become pregnant under these circumstances, it is heartbreaking but that being said we cannot agree to the death of a human being. Most of us have seen sonograms and a year or two later we are playing and laughing with them. We may not be able to prevent it but don’t ask us to acquiesce to,it.
You will not be and should not be banned for stating your opinion. It is just sad to think that you don’t see any other alternative solutions other than taking the life of an innocent child to solve the problem. It is not at all hard to not get pregnant in the first place which would be the preferred answer to the problem. After a woman fails to do that, then there are many other options that do not result in taking an innocent life. As for your being “appalled” at the Right’s indifference to things, I personally believe that you may want to rearrange your priorities for being appalled.. Taking someone’s life is pretty high up on my list.
When Roe v Wade was being discussed in the 70s, I felt much the same as you. I was against illegal abortion. I felt women deserved to have a safe, legal medical procedure when her circumstances were so dire that abortion was the only option. I thought that there were so many avenues of birth control available pre-conception that abortion would be a very uncommon event. I thought that education would be ubiquitous and along with birth control, unwanted pregnancies would dwindle down to next to none. I was sorely wrong. Abortion had become another form of birth control in this country. I cannot abide that. I do not want things to go back to the way they pre legal abortion. On the other hand, the legal gymnastics of Roe V Wade are not a good way of legalizing abortion either. First, it needs to be left to the states. Second, it needs to legislated, not handed down by the courts. Let’s do it right this time. Make it legal, safe and rare, and let each state determine what that means.
I feel it needful to point out to you that you can’t get banned here simply by stating your true, respectful opinion. Among many other big reasons that’s a big reason why I’m here. As I will now proceed to demonstrate.
I don’t agree with you. People make many, unfortunate, unwise choices in their lives. Screwing without contraceptives at a young age is only one of them. Abortion is murder, that’s the bottom line that you have to start from. Murder is not an answer to poor life choices. If you would not agree to the execution of a baby after it’s born then you are a hypocrite to advocate the execution of a baby helpless in its mother’s womb.
You might be speaking from personal experience, your comment has that tone but I don’t know for sure. If you had a young woman in your life at any point in the past and advocated for her to murder her own child I can see why you might think the way you do. You haven’t admitted to and faced the guilt in that situation. Rather than repent and admit the error of your ways you’re rationalizing murder as a legitimate solution to life’s problems and individual poor choices.
If your attitude is not a result of personal experience then you have even less excuse for condoning murder.
Abortion is a matter of convenience because there are always other routes to deal with the problem of an unintentional pregnancy. Murder is the easiest and cheapest of those many ways. That is a characteristic of murder, it “solves” a problem for good if you don’t mind doing it and you won’t be punished for it. If you’re averse to committing murder then you have other more difficult and more costly options but they are still viable options.
Stop making lame excuses to yourself for condoning murder.
We were told by the other side that legalized abortion would be safe and rare. It is neither one. A young woman having an abortion is taking a crapshoot with her health and future reproductive prospects. Abysmal as the practice of abortion may be, the legality of abortion might have gone untouched if that promise of safe and rare were kept. Like everything the immoral Left does, they couldn’t stop there. The abuses today are so broad that it is not possible to turn a blind eye anymore. Especially being as the idea of aborting a basically formless zygote has progressed all the way to “after the birth is completed keep the baby comfortable and then decide if it lives or dies”.
I’m sorry but your arguments make a lot of assumptions and none of them add up to justification for murder. Murder is murder, it is the unjustified, unrighteous slaying of an innocent human being.
I was in the military, I have no compunctions at all with killing human beings, as long as they’re the right human beings. I’ve never murdered anyone in my life and I don’t condone murder under any circumstances.

Mr Harris, my reply is that in a free country anyone can have any opinion they want. I’m not going to try to argue anyone out of their opinion on abortion. I knew when I wrote my 1st post on the subject that the people who support the end of abortion would be upset (yes, tossing it back to the States does not automatically end abortion, but really, hiding behind that sop is disingenuous, to my mind.). I will say that the punishment of the woman who got pregnant by mistake seems to flow through several of the comments. I personally find that appalling. Also, the speculation that I “got a girl in trouble” and that’s why I support abortion is a slur upon my character. I’ve always felt that when a discussion devolves into personal slurs, it means I “won.”
I would support a personal time limit on abortion based on when that clump of cells turns into a person…but again, this is a religious question, subject to the Constitution and subject to Your Personal Opinion…I won’t deny you the right to carry your own clump to term, but I will defy you to impose your religion on me or anyone else who disagrees with you. Freedom is tough.
