As usual, Bill has a thoroughly considered view on this subject, especially given his long interest in and knowledge of Russian/Soviet history, and now also because of the insights of his wife. Bill makes the case that Putin is and always was someone who wants to be at or near the power and control positions so historically Russian in nature, and that in becoming one he has become isolated, unable to listen to critics who wouldn’t dare question him. But in the article I refer to below, Putin HAS listened to others, including one Alexander Dugin.
I’m including excerpts (in quotes) from “The warped mind behind Russia’s war”: ( https://www.spiked-online.com/2022/04/22/the-warped-mind-behind-russias-war/ ). I’m doing so in the interest of suggesting there may be more, perhaps a lot more, than Putin trying to reconstitute the Soviet empire, or acting like a tyrant holding on to the last vestiges of communism. I do not see Russia as communism because it is enabling the reconstitution of traditional religion, something communism obviously did or does not. So in this I differ from Bill’s conclusion.
Alexander Dugin, is a current Russian philosopher who Putin has apparently followed and listened to from time to time. But unlike the title of the article, it actually makes the case that the real force behind Putin’s Russia as a reaction to the West’s anti-traditionalism, hedonism, and wokeism. and, I would add, anti-religionism. See if you might think the same.
I’m also very inclined to consider deeper Russian motives above because I am so opposed to the West’s deep state globalists pushing their anti-Russan narrative in so similar a fashion as they have pushed so many of their false narratives the past decades. Such as climate change that isn’t, a pandemic that wasn’t, a vaccine that wasn’t, racism that wasn’t and isn’t etc. So why are we so willing to endorse this globalist/Biden narrative hook, line and sinker? Perhaps the globalists et al can be right like a broken clock twice a day, but they have lied to and deceived the world so fully, I remain justifiably skeptical.
Anyway, here’s some additional quotes from the article that bear some investigation, in my opinion.
“In 2014, a Foreign Affairs article described Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin as ‘Putin’s brain’.
“At the time, it seemed a fitting epithet. The then 52-year-old Dugin was championing Russia’s annexation of Crimea and urging on the further conquest of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. Superficially, at least, he seemed to be uncannily in tune with the Kremlin.”
“There were countless other parallels emerging during the mid-2010s between Dugin’s thought and Russia’s political trajectory. He had long championed Russia as the leader of a Eurasian bloc, not dissimilar to the actual Eurasian Economic Union which came into being in 2014. He had consistently attacked the moral hegemony of the West, much as Putin started to do from his famous 2007 Munich Security Conference speech onwards.”
”Since 2014, Dugin’s influence over the Russian president seems only to have grown. Today he is conjured up as the ideological driving force behind Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine, the dark Rasputin-like power behind Putin’s de facto throne. He’s ‘the Russian fascist who helped to convince Putin to invade’, ‘the man behind Putin’, the thinker who, in the words of the Washington Post, ‘has brought us here, to the brink of another world war’.”
“It’s wrong to say he’s “Putin’s brain”, that he’s sitting at the end of these gigantic tables, whispering [in his ear]’, he tells me. ‘But neither is it true that Dugin’s a blowhard who managed to beguile academic and journalistic commentators into thinking he’s significant when he’s really not.”
Alexander Dugin is significant then. Not because he exerts any direct influence on Putin. And not because well-thumbed Dugin tomes sit on Russian generals’ bookshelves. But because he has helped forge, as a leading part of an increasingly active nationalist intellectual milieu, something that Russia’s ruling elite has lacked since the fall of Communism: namely, a sense of national mission, of near spiritual purpose. To use Teitelbaum’s words, Dugin has ‘narrativised’ and ‘characterised’ Russia. Through his books, lectures and media appearances, he has told Russia’s leaders over and over again what Russia supposedly once was and what it should become again – not just a great power, but a spiritual power, a bulwark of tradition against the nihilistic, everything-goes liberalism of the West.[my emphasis]
“And this reveals something important about not just Dugin’s thought, but also about the nature of the Russian nationalism he has played such a key role in promoting. In Dugin’s telling, Russia is fighting on behalf of the East against the West. In Dugin’s telling, Russia embodies tradition, spiritual truth and order against the soulless materialism, individualism and moral decay of the West.”
“Russian nationalism, Dugin-style, draws not on Russian strength, but on the longstanding turn among Western cultural elites against Enlightenment and modernity, from Nietzsche’s assault on Western nihilism to its latest iteration among the woke.”

We can only hope that Russians oppose this incursion into Ukraine, and protest his delusional idea of reconstituting the Soviet Empire. I think he has miscalculated the will and strength of his initial forces, the opposition of the Ukranian people, and the condemnation of the global community. But he is not one to back down, which makes him very dangerous. It is up to the Russians to decide their future with Putin.

Well I agree with you about the powerbase and embarrassment and I share your optimism that he won’t last much longer.

As far as “last dying gasp of communism” … I hope you’re right, but I fear human nature has not changed and that seed has been planted and germinated throughout the younger generations in the west — people who really believe that there is coming a society where no one has to work.

Ok Bill, excellent expose’ on how Putin got so rich and to where he is. Now, how about we hear how Joe Biden and his cronies did it. Not as rich as Putin, but plenty rich for gov’t work. I’ll be waiting. These crooks need to be shown to We the People for what they really are. As to communism’s dying breath, It may be dying there but it appears to be picking up steam right here. Seems the globalists may have a hand in this. Oops, more for you to dive into. A good man’s work is never done, eh.

You have clarified the thoughts I had about Putin’s future. But this is the next to last dying gasp of communism. There is still China. Xi isn’t going to soften up because of Putin’s absence. They will see it as another opportunity.

All attempts to take anything west of the Kyiv| Odessa line appears to have failed. Belarusian forces pulled back to their country and are bombarding the border towns. In some places Belarusians defected and, in one case, surrendered without a shot to the first Ukrainian they found. He took two hours to find out what to do with a whole battalion of fully armed POW’s. Ukraine is offering Russian pilots a million dollars to defect with their plane. 10000 per armored vehicle. Billions of Dollars are flooding in to Ukraine to buy weapons and bribe Russians into switching sides. Its working.

Putin has the third best body guard in the world after Trump and Biden. He also may have bypassed the safe guards on nuclear weapons to create a nuclear dead man switch. I suspect taking him out will involve some mechanism that makes it look like he is still in power for a few days while they round up the fanatical agents with specific orders. So there is a possibility that this process is already under way covertly. To retire off Putin they may have to quietly isolate and eliminate a dozen people around the country.

Excellent description of Putin. I have heard an alternative explanation for what is going on around Kiev, that this is like what the Russians did in WWII in the battle of Berlin. They encircled the city and then sent probes into the city. Could this be what we are seeing now?

No, the Russian forces have tried to encircle the city from three directions and have been blocked ten times. South west and south east of the city Zelenskyy has huge mobile and stealthy forces with drone cover. Far to the south a Russian column from Crimea has advanced along 5 roads. Each time they have been cut off and destroyed. The roads lead into well designed and hidden killing zones. Kyiv has become Putin’s Stalingrad. https://liveuamap.com/
Its a classic hit and run tactics from the Ukrainians which still somehow have mobility. The commander of the Russian force driving south west of Kyiv got his headquarters vehicle obliterated 13 hours ago. There is no information if he was on site at the time. Putin is fast running out of commanders. 9 generals dead, 20 to 30 majors. etc. Why fight the conscripts when you can kill the generals and fuel trucks with apparent ease. Putin has also sacked 10 to 20 generals. We do not know who.

Putin out by the summer? Could happen. BUT if the Russians can continue the offensive and gain more territory over time, then Ukraine will eventually fall and Putin will remain in power. So if the war is short and ineffective, Putin goes. But if the war continues into the fall/winter and more land is controlled by the Russians, Putin stays.
I hope Ukraine defeats Russia or at least stops their aggression and forces them into a standstill.

Bill is exactly right about everything he said in this video, as far as he went. That’s not surprising, Bill and I think nearly exactly alike, I’m just a much bigger prick about it than Bill is. But then I don’t have a website and a business to run where I have to be careful what or how I say things either.

It astounds me how short sighted, small minded, ignorant and outright stupid some of the people ostensibly claiming to be on our side can be.

Many are now all for letting Russia gobble up Ukraine because Ukraine has characteristics they don’t like. George Soros, Hillary Clinton and the Biden Crime Family are heavily involved in Ukraine so being as they are, then any greater evil that occurs is permissible to them. If those bad actors are involved then anything that stimies them must be the very best course of action.

This is exactly the same kind of stinking ignorance and mindless, dangerous partisanship that has the Biden Administration doing just the opposite of anything Trump did just because they think that if Trump did something it’s so bad that the opposite must be the very best thing to do. This is the flip side of the same coin and why we now have disasters in border control, energy independence with a marketable surplus, runaway inflation and much more.

This attitude of ignorance is not a matter of ideology or sound tactical and strategic thinking, it’s a thing called “contrarian paradoxicalism”. It is a form of “adversarialism”. If my adversary does anything then the opposite must be the best course because I am right and if he were right he wouldn’t be my adversary.

This is circular logic at its worst. It’s also lazy and stupid because the practitioner is relieved of any and all considerations of reason, degree and nuance. It’s an easy way to think because it requires little or no thought. This is a stupid person’s ready refuge and allows them to falsely believe they are doing the right thing and therefor smarter than anyone who does otherwise.

In the case of the current situation in Ukraine it goes “George Soros (et. al.) is on the side of Ukraine therefore I want Ukraine to expire as a nation. That serves Ukraine right and I hope they lose.”

Which is the bigger threat; a nation known for corruption supported by enemies of democratic principles that may eventually become a responsible democracy — Or a nation known for corruption run by a psychotic kleptocracy that wants to dominate the world for corrupt financial gains and just happens to also be armed with nuclear weapons?

Which is easier to fight and more likely to come around to Western ideology? The country that is merely corrupt or the country that is grossly corrupt and an existential threat to life on planet Earth?

If Ukraine prevails then Soros, the Clintons and Bidens may continue to fund their operations through gains harvested from Ukrainian corruption. There is at least hope that could be countered and neutralized. If Russia wins the oligarchy in Russia gains even more financial power to support a kleptocracy backed by the weight of a large, potent nation armed with nuclear weapons that threatens our very lives. Ukraine will be gone, replaced by an even bigger threat but hey, at least Ukraine is gone.

Here’s a clue. One might present challenges that may or may not be overcome and the other can flash fry you to a crispy crunch right where you sit.

One or the other is going to come out on top in the war in Ukraine. Both are bad, neither are good, but one is much more bad and much less good than the other. So which side makes sense to try to help and which side makes sense to try to stop?

I suppose the only rational response to some of those people is “George Soros wears pants, so you better order some kilts right quick” or one I think I remember from a few years back that “Trump breathes oxygen so you probably think that’s a bad idea.”

Yes people fail to realize that Zelenskyy beat the Ukrainian kleptocracy, their Nazis and the pro Russian faction resoundingly. He is a Trump nationalist. He seems to have spent the past 3 years preparing for this war far better that anyone expected. His forces are mobile in conditions that has his enemy bogged!?! His people have equipment that no one knew about. He has hacked, disabled, or manipulated the entire Russian encrypted command structure. His hackers are pranking the Russians with the internet troll face and Q memes. That says one thing: It’s not Biden!

Sarah Hoyt called this the Russian version of the Ghost Dance, the last gasp of a dying empire. Seems you are in agreement. Unfortunately, history also offers us an alternative scenario. By 1940 the German economy was on the brink of collapse due to the unsustainable government spending and the dearth of foreign currency reserves. The National Socialists gangsters sought to fix that problem not by getting rid of their problematic leader, but by launching their war of conquest. Someone better figure out a way to pack a lot of golden parachutes for the kleptocrats now that the jig looks to be up, or maybe they will decide to roll the dice on war (because there is no other winning option).

The Russian economy isn’t in danger of collapse like the German economy was … Though sanctions are not helping that and because of the kleptocracy Bill mentions it’s by no means as healthy as it could be.

A more likely scenario is that Putin will be deposed and replaced by the oligarchy because of the old saying “a half a loaf is better than no loaf at all”. Or to put it in a more relevant frame “A 450 million dollar yacht is better than no yacht at all.”

If the patronage of the Russian government gets rid of Putin they can hope that the situation will return to the previous status quo with a new puppet, or at least that something worthwhile can be recovered from the wreck. If they decide to egg Putin on to a war of conquest comparable to the Nazis they risk losing everything and joining the bread lines. Self-interest would seem to argue for the former.

Yeahh blah blah blah. Am I listening to CNN or the NYT? Talk about Zelensky and the Elite puppet state of Ukraine. How Ukraine officials refuse to allow the people to flee in order to use them as human shields. Putin offered a cease fire to specifically allow them to evacuate citizens! The more dead Ukranians the better for the globalist government there. Please stop shilling for your enemies. You are smarter than that. The same people who have persecuted you Bill, are the same people supporting Ukraine. Think about that and keep thinking about that. Peace
