Now a citizen – F Yeah!

Well, a while back I posted about my upcoming interview/test for citizenship  –  that was postponed as that morning we had a freak fall snow day here in the high desert of Abq. Shortly after I received a letter indicating I’d soon receive a letter with a rescheduled interview date (seriously, a letter telling me they’d send me a letter!).

On the 15th I arrived for my test and interview….they’ve 100 civics questions and pick 10 and I had to get 6 correct….we stopped after 6 questions since I got them all right away…yes, I did take some pride in studying these things and being prepared.

With Covid, the usual process of coming back at some later date for the official ceremony isn’t happening. Even quicker, simpler – come back later that afternoon…park by the flagpole….when the officer comes out flash your lights and he’ll come give you your certificate.

So, done deal for me and I am over the moon…woohoo!

Congratulations, asking as a Canadian hoping to one day flee this clown country. How much did the whole process cost, anytime I look for an answer I cant seem to find a good round number. I would love to do it but I have to do it for at least 4 people.

It was not cheap, and cost may vary on circumstance. The initial entry visa on a marriage to an American was about $1000 an a LOT of paperwork. The initial green card after that was about another $1000 and a some more paperwork. The final citizen step was about $800 IIRC.

We started this whole thing back around late 2007. I got my entry visa in spring 2009…not a quick process. My initial card was 2 years with citizenship eligibility after 3 years, so we had to do the $1000 ten year green card – I suppose that’s something built into the system to weed out a few “convenience” marriages. I waited until this year to file the citizenship as I wanted to at least get a bit of my money’s worth from the system.

This last step was surprisingly quick – I submitted all the forms and documents online in March/April 2020 and expected it to be a year at least, but all done now.

Again, can’t say how pleased I am, just feels wonderful!
