This is another issue that I am fairly torn on.
On one hand, I believe that there should be absolutely no restriction on drugs.
I think treatment for addictions is a far better solution than incarceration.
I also don’t think it is up to anyone to decide what a citizen can do to their own body (and yes, a pregnant mother is a different story)
My stance is in no way to make excuses for those people that neglect their responsibilities nor to excuse those that commit crimes while under the influence.
Additionally, while I sympathize with the families who have loved ones die to overdose. I tend to think of these deaths as a way of a self-correcting equation.
These people hooked on drugs are not good for society and will generally OD and not be a burden on society (yes, that is cold hearted, but the reality of the situation is these people do not care about you or society or anything other than their own oblivion. I have very little sympathy for such selfishness)
I think that a free person can do whatever they want to their own body tattoo it, cut it, fill it full of drugs… and they MUST understand that there are ramifications to such choices.
I also think that employers should be able to do drug testing to make sure that the people they employ are not a risk.
Also, recipients of public assistance should have to prove they are not on drugs.
(For that matter I think if you work for any government Federal state county city etc you should be regularly tested)
People on public assistance should be working to get out of the system and my tax dollars should not be funding their drug habit (nor their gambling habit or any other habit. It should only fund basic necessities).
I know full well that having a society fill with people drugged out of their minds is not a good thing. But I believe it should be treated like alcoholism. Treat the people and the underlying causes for why they feel the need to escape reality, rather than restricting every single citizen.
