Political beliefs (Marriage)

This is a religious institution. Marriage has been defined throughout history as a commitment between a MAN and a WOMAN.
Whether this means one man and one woman or one man and multiple wives that is up to the precepts of the particular religion.

This institution is not up for debate by the state. This is something that is between you, your partner, and your faith. Government should have no part in what constitutes marriage.

Now do not get me wrong. This country has an interest in relationships that continue to renew our society. If a couple or multiple people wish to engage in a “Union” that in my opinion is perfectly fine. However, this is not “marriage”. I am not against a man & a man becoming partners. or a woman & woman becoming partners. This union can simply be called something else. Such as “Social Union”. There is no reason to call it marriage other than too bully those religion’s that do not believe in the same notion.

I believe that the US should encourage families with a mother and father as this balance has been the foundation of societies for eons and it works.

Unions that do not fit that model, I do not think should be prohibited. but I also do not think they should be encouraged.

As far as a social union being recognized by the Government. I think there is an easy fix there as well. One or all of the partner(s) legally changes their last name to reflect that fact. and the same rights and responsibilities are applied as married couples.

Marriages and “Unions” will be handled by the government similar to a business contract that is recognized by the government and that is all. The rest is up to the particulars of the religion that the couples subscribe to.

Divorce is a whole “other” subject.

Well as a married gay man, I can say that I am thankful I am considered to be as good as everyone else under the law. I don’t care about the label quite frankly. I too believe the government has no business being in the marriage business, But it is, and with that said, I’m thankful to be participating in it. Churches have a right to not participate in gay marriages, that’s fine. But government cannot and must not discriminate or pick winners and losers as we are all equal under the law. The churches should be left alone, as individual citizens should be also. But perhaps let’s draw the marriage line at two consenting adults?

Divorce is never a good thing, but in some cases it is acceptable. These cases are outlined in the Bible. Anything else is unacceptable and never an option. Some of these cases in which it is acceptable for you to get a divorce include: your spouse is cheating on you, your spouse is a nonbeliever and wants to divorce you for being a believer, etc.

I would agree. As far as polygamy is concerned, I don’t think it has any place in modern America. It was never ideal, but in past societies I believe that it served a purpose, so God allowed it. Single women had no means of providing for or defending themselves in many cases historically. And since men often died younger from things like war and work accidents, there were fewer of them than there were women. Therefore, sometimes it was necessary for men to take on multiple wives in order for all women to be protected and provided for in a society. Thankfully, single women can survive just fine in modern America, so polygamy has no place here.

As I understand it, God allowed the use of concubines in the early days of the Old Testament in order to populate the earth, or in the event a wife was unable to bear children. The concubines were not considered ‘wives’. However, the men who used them would care for both the child and the mother outside of the home.

Actually I’m of a similar belief. Call it a social union or civil union either works for me. Let that be the “governments” recognition of a ” legal” union of two people for purposes of legal and property rights. I’m of the belief that marriage belongs in the church according to whatever “religious laws” govern that specific church.
