After a life of 96 years and reign of 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II has died.
It’s odd. This is something that was going to happen sooner rather than later. Something that I, and friends and colleagues, have been involved in making plans for at a royal palace and will now be involved in delivering. Yet somehow it always felt like something that would never happen. It just doesn’t seem real, but it is.
She knew and worked with 15 Prime Ministers and met every US President from Truman onwards except LBJ. Her political experience was unique and her subtle influence profound. Her first Prime Minister was Churchill, when he first became and MP the monarch was Victoria. She was a link across distance and across time.
It’s a time of slight trepidation here as well as the obvious loss. I won’t dwell on the likely push now from those who want us to become a republic, this is not the time, but don’t be surprised if things get a little weird here.
Whatever happens to us, she is at peace now, and back with Philip.
The Queen is dead, long live the King.

No matter if a royalist or Republican, you have to say she was remarkable. Full of grace, humor, optimism and calm in hard times, doing what she could to help, even in war. A steady hand that will be missed. I never knew her but by reputation, and even in this jaded time that expects the worst in people, that reputation was superb. Her sense of noblesse oblige was well defined. She will be missed. May the UK have more like her. And may every nation have one too.
Its time for her to rest; in the undiscovered country.
Take care of yourself Davey Packer in this time of loss and change.
