Right Angle: Backstage 08/15/23

Baseball, football and fires, among other random topics this week.

On the menu this week: it’s BASEBALL, Ray; a heartwarming story gets blindsided by modern ethics, and a withdrawn attempt to put the horrific Hawaii wildfires into some kind of context without coming off like an insensitive lout. All this and so much less on this week’s edition of Right Angle: Backstage!

My part time job is ushering for my alma mater Purdue University sports events. While the opposing team players are announced at girl’s softball games, they play the Star Wars Imperial March. LOL

Vincent Price (the actor) was a gourmet chef and wrote several cooking books and one was something like “The Perfect Meal”. In this book he included a hotdog at the ball park along with some suds. His rationale was that there was nothing more appropriate and satisfying that those two during the 7th inning stretch. Baseball is a great game to watch IN PERSON. It is such a big game that gets compressed with TV. I miss the old-style ball parks

Looking forward to a more complete discussion regarding the Marion County Record (KS newspaper) scandal. It’s more complicated than it seems..

Scott you could not be more wrong on the UK boat migrants story, please consider watching some of the Podcast of the Lotus Eaters coverage of that story for a more accurate take.

We would repeat the “Sir Robin running away” part of “Holy Grail” when running in our high school cross country meets. (I only scored if the other team didn’t bring enough people). If around others passing us on the course we would break into “How do you know she’s a witch?” or “Bring out your dead” sketches. If they were running with us in a pack we would do the entirety of the Frenchman’s insults from the castle, sometimes adapting the words to our “audience”. “That one smelled of elderberries.”

As a Northern Colorado resident, we have the NoCo Owlz. The Vibes play us. Much lower than the old AAA Sky Sox. However, the vibes mascot is a s’mores. Which is awesome! I need that hat.

Steve, 63 deaths attributed to the 89 Quake dubbed the Loma Prieta. Per Nat. Geo. We had at least one death in Santa Cruz when an old unreinforced brick wall collapsed on Pacific Ave. I know all about it. I was 6 miles from epicenter. Damn TV jumped off the table and tried to crush my then 3 year old daughter. No warning. Last thing I thought of on that October day at 5:04 pm was to blame the Government.

Question for Steve (and to enlighten anyone else) are you left or right eye dominant?
For shooting in particular, one eye is usually stronger than another and means you should (or is easier) to shoot that hand. My brother and I are both right handed, but left eye dominant which we found out getting into archery when we were younger. I’ve tried shooting gun and crossbow later, and nearly cannot aim shooting right handed.

Running can be fun if you’re on a trail with potential nature visits. Where I walk, I can spot squirrels, deer, count bird calls, and a variety of other things.

Small towns are sometimes known for an old boys network, or power cliques of old families that run the town either covertly or overtly. If the police chief has been the chief in town for a couple decades, he might think he IS the law instead of just an enforcer of it, and use his buddy deputies to come down hard on someone threatening to take his power from him. – The NY Times is only against these police because they probably think flyover country is all red and these people are all wrongthinking.

You know what? If all you guys ever did was the Back Stage episode and never did anything else — I would consider my membership well spent. This is a better insight into how you think than anything else you produce. You could go through this for 2 hours or more and I would consider my membership among the best investments in information in my life. Bravo, keep up the good work.

As usual, speaking of what and how the government works that are not obvious to the proletariat, Bill is spot on correct with why the Navy didn’t call off the search for dead civilian submariners. I don’t know where Bill gets his wisdom on things like this but it’s valid and accurate.

With all the nonsense going on out in the world, it’s best to not be walking or running while being distracted by your phone or input from your earbuds. You lose situational awareness of evil that may prey upon you. This distraction attracts bad guys. I hate what this country has and is turning into.

With regard to chip manufacturing, Intel is not “it”. There is another American company called Applied Materials that is, by far, the world’s leading supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Most of the machines that make the semiconductors are made by Applied Materials.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that most guys love the Three Stooges while most women do not. When my daughter was young, we used to speculate that gay guys probably didn’t like the Stooges either.
So, she would sometimes say to me about some guy, “I don’t think he likes the Three Stooges.” And that was our code word(s) for gay alert.

Um, no Steve … A tornado WARNING does not mean there’s a tornado on the ground. It means a tornado, or a funnel cloud which is a tornado that has not touched down and has not yet become a threat, or a TVS (Tornado Vortex Signature) has been spotted on radar by your local WFO (Weather Forecast Office) of the NWS.

You should NEVER ignore a tornado warning but your response depends on the proximity and expected rate and direction of travel of the purported tornado.

If you don’t know that information then you should take shelter immediately. Err on the side of caution. There is a real threat, you simply might not know the particulars of it and so have no way to gauge your response.

I work in a volunteer capacity for the NWS and I often see a TVS before the local WFO spots it. If it’s somewhere that it’s possible for me to see a funnel cloud (or a tornado on the ground) I go outside and look to establish visual confirmation. A TVS can occur masked by clouds because it’s up where you can’t see it or it can be unobservable because it’s rain wrapped.

If I can see it, I call it in in the capacity of a certified storm spotter volunteer. l have been trained so they take my word for it. If I give such a report the WFO sounds the alarms, send texts and all the rest of the warning system.

If I can’t see it then I don’t call it in. I continue to monitor the NWS radar feed and wait to see what happens. If I see a TVS and they mark a TVS on radar there still may not be a warning issued because they’re looking at what I’m looking at but they’re professional meteorologists and know more about what they’re looking at than I do.

I hope this clears up the process of a tornado warning being issued.

Gentlemen, Speaking of Monty Python and the cheese sketch, did you know the John Cleese’s father changed his name. It was originally Cheese and he changed it to Cleese.

I’m old, I’ve been attending games mostly MLB since the 50s, never had a ball come closer than about 20 feet away, unfortunately with cameras everywhere today if a grown man catches a ball today and fails to hand it to the nearest cute kid he will find himself mocked nationwide on social media.

I had the choice to catch a foul ball AND put down the hot dog FIRST, OR, try to catch the extremely high pop foul with one hand while still holding on to 7 buck dog.
Hand up… ball hits forearm between the wrist and elbow, nauseating thud sound, ball not caught….dog bun and kraut dropped… crowd response was “ohhhhh that’s gonna hurt!”

That’s a first. I guess even The BeastTube has a slow conversion speed, and I caught it too early. IDK…but when I ripped it, the first time, it was only listed as 360p on The BeastTube. Maybe they are feeling the pressure from Rumble’s success…lol.
Speaking of which, if you still were planing on it, as you guys told me…All you have to do to move this to Rumble, is the same thing you do on YT…embed the link to where your “unlisted” Rumble video is. You did that on accident, I assume, a few months ago. Just wanted to know if you changed your plans or what.
