RIP Chuck Yeager

You’re always sorry to see the great ones go, but to say “he had a good run!” is an extreme understatement.  He did his bit for God and country, and at 97 he’s earned a little rest.  I am reminded of what George S. Patton, Jr. once said, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived.”

As if 2020 hasn’t been brutal enough. I have such deep admiration for Yeager — the man who concealed a broken rib (horseback riding injury) to keep his date with breaking the sound barrier, bringing a sawed-off broom handle along to help him close the hatch to the X-1. A hero forever, and as American as they come. Ad astra, Sir!

I am chagrined to admit that I did not know Chuck Yeager was a General Officer, although I’m not at all surprised to learn it.
