Northwestern University journalist complains that White students fail to make way for him and his Black friends when using the sidewalk. Is this systemic sidewalk racism a throwback to Jim Crow laws?

Kenny Allen has a job waiting at Evergreen College for president. Walking while black, (to the exclusion of white students), will soon cause racist underfunded potholes to appear all over campus.

This is a classic example of, “When you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail to you.” Extrapolating that premise to the subject at hand, seeing everything as racist makes Kenny Allen more than a self-opined victim. It makes him the actual racist.
This reminds me (a white male) of a conversation I had with a woman while waiting in line to enter the Pinnacles National Park bookstore earlier this year. The park was crowded that day and there was a white, male ranger directing traffic, diverting people away from parking lots further into the park that he assumed were full and to the overflow parking behind the visitor center. Prior to getting into line to await entry into the store, I had exited the further-in part of the park (I arrived very early that morning to hike and so was allowed to park near the trailheads further in) and parked in overflow. When I stopped at the ranger’s diversion point at the three-way intersection where he stood with another ranger directing traffic, I rolled down my window to tell him that I had counted at least eight empty spots at the parking lots near or in the lot I had left. He mumbled an “Ok” and motioned me forward. Not sure if he was being dismissive, uncomprehending, or just didn’t care, but I decided he didn’t understand the implication of what I said and so I told him again, this time putting the pieces together for him. Again, a mumbled “ok”, almost no eye contact, and a verbal direction to move forward because the lot was full. I asked him how long he had been there diverting traffic. Answer: about 45 minutes. So that meant there were 8 bonafide spaces available for people to use that were MUCH closer to the trailheads. But his response was, “Well, I’ll need to verify, but we don’t have the rangers available.” This guy just didn’t seem to care, and his tone of voice implied that he didn’t believe a word I just said. Dismissive and rude, frankly. So I drove to the visitor’s center and parked.
The woman I was in front of in line (there were others in line, too) struck up a conversation with another waiting woman. She was indignant that the ranger was quite rude and dismissive when she asked for some information. She was upset but maintained and composure, though her words were sharp: “Probably just because I’m a woman he didn’t give me the time of day. He was so rude. It’s like he couldn’t be bothered to answer my question.” (She was small, pretty, light brown-skinned, probably early 30’s—most men I know would have flirted with her and been quite happy to answer he questions, not dismissed her.)
I couldn’t just stand there and let that slide. I just hate our culture’s victimhood mentality. Her imagined micro aggression (or experienced “discrimination”) was bogus, and I had the first-hand, fresh experience to know it; I had experienced the same attitude from the very same ranger. I asked her some questions to verify we were talking about the same man. We were. I said as gently as I could, “Ma’am, I couldn’t help but to overhear your conversation. I don’t mean to be disagreeable, but…” and I told my story and sympathized with her about the way the man treated us. To her credit after we found the common ground about how the man had treated us, she realized her error and changed her opinion of the man from “rude because I’m a woman” to “rude because he’s just that way.” And she seemed to loosen up a bit after that.
Anyway, point is that, like you three are saying in this video, Kenny’s sidewalk “racism” experience is b/s because a lot of people are just rude and don’t bother to move at all for others of all “races” when they’re walking. I felt like I had accomplished something that day by gently recalibrating her thinking to align with reality, which to her credit, she did.
Interesting. And hey, thanks for taking the time to gently and civilly correct the situation. We all need to be alert for opportunities to do the same. Blessed are the Peacemakers … etc.
The guy The Boys are talking about in the video did just the opposite. Instead of trying to defuse a situation he was wrongly and for selfish reasons adding fuel to the fire. I think people like that do that kind of thing intentionally. Both to signal their own virtue (and having the opposite of their desired effect) and to drive wedges between people. Divide and conquer … etc.
When I left the NY-tri-state area for college, the resident halls were separated by the academic buildings by a large (22 – acres) expanse of space. I was getting extremely agitated because the damn southerners walked so slowly and then didn’t move when I passed them. Or worse, they would just stop in the middle and have a conversation with someone coming the other way, forcing me to go around both of them. Why couldn’t they just use the sidewalks for the purpose intended, moving from point A to point B as rapidly as your legs will take you?
Ah, to be 17 again and think all the world revolves around you.
Eventually, I realized that some people allow extra time to get across campus and are not always rushing. That this NY gestalt was not necessarily the optimum and running into someone you know amongst 40,000 people is actually pretty cool. Having the time to stop and chat, even better.
Maybe one day, Kenny will grow up. I am not thinking that this is likely, but it is possible.
Bill, it’s not just that pointing out silly minutia is petty and venal. Now every Black person who read that article is going to focus on and take note of every time any non-Black person doesn’t defer and yield sidewalk real estate to them. Every non-Black person who read that article is going to be more conscious of not crowding Black people on the sidewalk.
Some, certainly not all but some, Black people who have read that article and now notice that someone with white skin ignored their “sidewalk privilege” and just continued on oblivious to their blackness — Will find a new reason to be offended at something they never noticed before.
Some, again certainly not all but some, non-Black people (mostly white beta males trying to exhibit their wokeness in a mating ritual to attract woke females) who notice a Black person on the sidewalk will now virtue signal by stepping aside in an obviously servile manner.
This is a subtle “death by a thousand cuts” strategy that feeds the monster of racism. It’s racism because the fulcrum is skin color.
That’s why you’re seeing all this silly crap. If you dig at a pimple long enough and hard enough you don’t get rid of the pimple, it becomes an infected, weeping open sore.
Why are you capitalizing the “black word”, but not the “white word” in all of your copy?
#RaceBaiting is not a virtue.
it’s possible he set it up that way. why not ask him?
It’s actually grammatically correct either way, various authorities on English Grammar go both ways. Some news and scholastic organizations capitalize both Black and White when referring to race, some capitalize just Black and not white, some capitalize neither black nor white. I was using the capitalization to make a subtle point about some Black people getting the idea that white people should step aside when Black people come down the sidewalk.
Clearly the point was way too subtle for Mr. Erin W. Hood (no relation to Robin). Six people clicked “like” on that comment but apparently all he got out of it was an opportunity to parade in his asshat and play grammar police on a petty point he didn’t even understand. I’m willing to be he doesn’t even realize he’s the idiot that has been caught in an idiot trap and probably thinks I’m referring to you. I’m not.
When I write “Black” with a capital and “white” without a capital I’m distinguishing the racist predominance in an idea. Same goes for if I write “White” with a capital and “black” in lower case. If neither is capitalized I see the racial factor as neutral. Like this —
“The Ku Klux Klan’s White men in white robes have a history of hostility towards black people. Some White Klansmen and their sympathizers even go so far as to claim that black skin is the ‘Mark of Cain’ referenced in Biblical Genesis. This is a virulent form of White racism.”
“There are Black people who believe themselves superior to ‘non-melaninized’ white people. These Black people believe melanin is a sign of superior genetics and white people having the least melanin are the most inferior. This is a virulent form of Black racism.”
“The crowd was peaceful and composed of white, black, hispanic and other people of both sexes. All the attendees of the event; white, black, brown, yellow and red — displayed no indication that race, creed, color or sex made any difference to them in any way.”
None of that constitutes any sort of “race baiting”, btw. That idea is absurd, Mr. Hood read something into my words that was not there. That’s called a “straw man fallacy”.
Because it’s not a hard and fast rule of grammar I sometimes capitalize either black or white with no real purpose at all. I type 90 words a minute and sometimes my fingers just do whatever they feel like doing to get my thoughts into text. This isn’t formal writing so I don’t really worry about grammar on the level that a thesis or novel would require when I’m commenting on forums.
Unless you’re talking about the surnames Black or White, then no, it isn’t proper grammar. It’s a woke thing that race-baiters do.

i knew what you were doing (as most here would). erin has an edge that needs to be smoothed out.
respects and keep on keeping on.
It’s an idiot trap and Oh look! I caught one!
You found a mirror?
Lol, a variation of the old “I know you are but what am I?” comeback from 3rd grade. Good one, Sport, way to show off your 4th grade education.

I gave you too much credit saying you have a fourth grade education. No one above the third grade let’s YouTube do their talking for them. I’m not going to go watch a video you think makes your point for you, you’ve already shown us your interpretation of video information is abysmal. Grow up, Sonny.
Stop taking yourself so seriously, I don’t…

Try this experiment — Go grab two other white people, walk three abreast down the sidewalk in South Central Los Angeles or Harlem — And see how many black people get out of your way. While you’re at it turn around and look back at the crowd that’s gathering behind you. That way what happens next won’t be a complete surprise.
Kenny needs to grow up! He is exhibiting nothing but the childish behavior of the freaks rolling on the supermarket floor demanding their mommies buy the candy.
Kenny is a retard!
Sidewalk etiquette, is racist? Wow that’s definitely reaching. Most humans are selfish, self-centered, mono-universe people. This type of lack of respect for others has no racism involved at all. Instead it is actually a sign of the exact opposite by not noticing anything about others. In other words these selfish sidewalk drones don’t notice or even care there might be others wanting to use the sidewalk. These drones especially don’t care if others are purple, pink, tall, short, old, young, alive or dead. These selfish people are just selfish jerks, but most especially it shows they are not racist, they just don’t care one way or the other. Racism takes actively noticing others and work to choose treat them differently than others. Racism, isn’t ignoring others.
It takes some active choice to deal with them, but the simplest way is to just stand your ground and wait for these self-centered drones to either move around you or in some instances even run into you. (I do love these instances and then tell the brain dead zombie “Yes other people do exist.” Cell phone drones are the funniest to watch literally run into things/people.
Next we will hear the sunlight is racist and needs to be filtered for color.
Tell that “journalist” to actually try investigating the schools funding sources for political/foreign influence and/or bias.
Anybody but me remember black Band-Aids? They didn’t sell very well at the time.
Kenny sounds as useful as a marzipan battery operated personal massager.
When I walk down a sidewalk, l have noticed that there is a full exchange of people yielding to others in the downtown areas. Blacks, whites, Asian, homeless, suits and casual dress. They are just trying to get where they are going. You just happened to be in the way.
On the north side of Spokane where I live, its different. I’ve noticed that people have crossed the street to avoid passing me. It might be because the young ladies are scared or wary of a white male. Or it could be that I’m 6’6″ man with a frown. I do try to smile. Does that mean I believe everyone is below me? I am 6’6″. I try to show kindness in this cruel world. They just have a hard time receiving it. Too bad for them.
I am of the belief that if one wants to feel a victim of anything, they can, and there is nothing I can do to encourage or stop it. Everyone has that right. Its their choice.
No, if you gave black people a wide berth on the sidewalk, they (and by “them” I mean the CRT race-baiters) would rationalize why that is ALSO racist. Something like “see, they don’t want to be anywhere NEAR us! Rassssssissssst!!!!
I’m starting to wonder if these blacks that experience these bogus “micro aggressions” would prefer segregated sidewalks. “Rosa Parks be damned! George Wallace was right!” seems to be the next logical step in Kenny’s thinking. He has been educated from elementary school up to NWU to believe he’s a victim and that society owes him something (especially us inferior white folks, per Critical Race Theory) and must treat him like a king. I mean, everyone gets a participation trophy in school sports so that everyone “wins”, right? Combine this “you are special” bs with the victimhood bs with the CRT mega-bs and you get their chromosomally anomalous love child: Kenny.
There are people at various colleges already advocating for segregated residence halls and holding colored-only social events. I don’t think its racial though, but they’re afraid of getting non-woke cooties. They attack and drive off people of color speaking ideas that don’t fit just as hard.
Self segregation is, like all other discrimination, perfectly legal unless done for illegal reasons. Way back in the day, we had an all black frat on campus that used to haze their pledges by making them dress in paramilitary clothing and march around campus, occasionally shouting out cadences and otherwise being a curious annoyance. I took to calling them the Namibian National Air Force. Self segregation. But they didn’t demand everyone adhere to it themselves, and, aside from the marching and cadence calling, they were largely innocuous.. Such is no longer the case.
And, rest assured, the safe-space-only, no whites allowed thing sweeping through Wokiversities nowadays is most assuredly “racial”. They seem to believe that two wrongs make a right. I blame Affirmative Action for that flawed logic.
Yeah I would be fine with black only student groups just as I am fine with Christian student groups asking their leadership to be, and espouse, Christian values.
The University run dorms on the other hand, shouldn’t be racially segregated, and the various Affirmative Action seem to have brain washed a variety of people into thinking certain groups of people have to be treated differently because they are different and not just that some were held down for a period of time. Those held down should have recovered by now, as shown by others that were held down, both here and in their home countries, but have succeeded here.
I think we need to emphasize that both inner city blacks, trailer park white trash and (and hillbillies) of whatever derogatory category you want to use can succeed in college as long as they have had the fundamental schooling prior to enrolling. They are not “too stupid” due to skin color but because they haven’t built the base to support the rest of the structure. If we make special exceptions because we feel sorry for certain people all we do is doom them to overpriced, excessive bills (or if we just hand them cash) a wasted 6 years when they could have gained useful knowledge and started making their own money, and way in the world.
The decline of civility has been in motion since my childhood in the seventies. As my parents us, I taught mine: Be polite, keep to the right. My mother had an effective way of making people aware of their self-centeredness. She would come to a halt two steps away from the on-comers and they would either have to bump into her, or yield to her. We would be lined up behind her, as is proper. They would give her looks, and she would return them with a cocked eyebrow. My mother was the queen of the nice lady “screw you.”
My mother was a master of that too. Learned from her mother.
“Make way! Make way! Black man approaching!”
I’m feeling more racist every day. The campaign appears to be working.
It’s a good thing I live in a gated, white neighborhood, huh? Not.
I do live in an armed neighborhood, so everyone is polite.
I lived in the pre-civil rights south. I don’t think any of these mouthy little “hand-held personal massagers” have ever seen racism. No one would have ever found their bodies.
I have begun to adopt the same attitude I had when my freshman year girlfriend accused me of cheating on her. Since I was already paying the price for my crime, I saw no reason not to reap the benefits thereof.
Chicago is MAGA country, Steve.
Like a prospector panning for flecks of gold, the grievance mongers have to hunt for flecks of racism

You have to understand the motives of Teh Radical Left – victimhood isn’t a bug; it’s a feature. I can’t remember who wrote this, but the cult of victimhood requires three things: a victim, a champion, and a villian. The victim is obvious, the champion is the Leftist – guess who the villian is
The way I see it, the “cult of victimhood,” as you call it, defines the victim, champion and villian. All three characters are actually the same individual … the Leftist idiot. He’s both the victim and champion in his own delusion, and he’s the villain to the rest of society. It’s a one person show that has spawned from the hedonstic ME culture of the 1960’s to the present, and he expects the entire world to cater to his every whim. By any rational definition, this Leftist idiot suffers from sloth, envy, greed, lust, pride and finally wrath when others fail to do his bidding.
As you said, all of these things are “features,” and they are designed to undermine and destroy anything good in the human condition.
