Despite enthusiasm among young people for Bernie Sanders’ socialist movement, young people failed to wake up to vote for him in primaries to date, allowing Joe Biden to take the lead while getting drubbed by Bernie among the young. Sanders turnout is down compared with his 2016 run, but perhaps more startling is the disconnect between the passion young voters display, and the votes they don’t.

Some random thoughts and responses as the video went along…
“age of the bumper sticker” is now the “age of the hash tag” shown by the Obamas when they begged #bringbackourgirls instead of sending the Marines. You don’t even have to show up, really, just wave the flag and that’s enough. Tweet a hashtag, share a facebook or instagram post, and you’ve done your part to save the world.
“you get the trophy for showing up” does work because you can take a selfie at the rally and post colorful pictures to Instagram. Polls on the other hand are no-pic areas. So you get a trophy at the rally, not the poll.
A caller to a talk show here the other day said there should be a max age for voting, asking why someone got to direct a future they wouldn’t be around to see? The host didn’t really think that was a great idea and was asking “Where do you drawn the line? 85, 80, 60?” and the caller only said that was another discussion.
I don’t know if the numbers support this, but I wonder if all of the youth who are for Bernie did get out and vote, but its only the vocal and active youth that for him and they are a small percentage of all youth. Most just don’t pay attention to politics and the conservative ones are quite quiet about it so they don’t get doxxed and harassed off college campuses.
Biden connecting with people on a personal level will be shot if any of the vicious comments he’s made to people’s faces gets out. If the party attempts to keep him quiet and under wraps succeeds, that would also hurt that kind of connection building.
Enthusiasm for Bernie reminds me a lot of the Ronulans from our side. And lest anyone thing I’m just bashing him, I’ve always appreciated how Ron Paul was able to sometimes raise questions that nobody else was asking and would otherwise get ignored. Unfortunately, most of the time he was Ron Paul.
He wrapped up some valid points in tinfoil hats.
