Dear Scott,
We love you, man, but I must firmly disagree with your point made in the episode “Protestors Mock Man…”. We can and must reach out to reasonable people on the left to address serious abuses of justice, like no-knock warrants and the inefficacy of the Drug War. But that discussion must first start with a thorough repudiation of the people breaking things, attacking people, virtually demanding a socialist revolution, and calling for patently racist remedies to these injustices. Otherwise, we have no common ground on which to base our discussion of justice, since we cannot even agree on what is just.
The ones burning, rioting, and attacking people are very loud and proclaim to speak for the entire left wing. Reasonable people on the left need make it clear that these people are wrong and that the rioters do not speak for them before we can have a productive discussion.
Thank you, Scott, Steve, and Bill for all that you do!
Best!
Jacob Jones
One reply on “Sorry, but I must disagree firmly, Scott”
As has been said elsewhere I think that Scott’s point is very valid but it is a matter of timing.
The reasoning together should have happened over the last 4 years as voters on both sides tried to push their parties to cooperate. There may well also be a time after this point where it can still happen.
But right now someone needs to step in and clamp down on the loose cannons who feel they are above the law so that conversation can happen in the right environment.
Scott strikes me as someone with a lot of hope for the future and who sees the majority of ordinary decent folks as just that, on both sides of the political table. Without that outlook you are left with no hope and a deeply divided country. I can see why Scott chooses to see the possibilities in a more positive light.
