Teachers executed in Active Shooter Drill.

When I first read this I thought, come on. I’ve never used airsoft guns. But real ones are serious and paintball can be, so I looked up Airsoft injuries. Maybe the planners of this exercise should have as well. I think some loud bang type noise instead of an actual projectile of any kind might have been much more effective for the exercise.

Anyway, Leaders of the Indiana State Teachers Association say, earlier this year, teachers at an Indiana school were shot with plastic pellets and injured during active shooter training. In response, the union is calling upon lawmakers for more regulation.

ISTA officials confirmed the incident took place at Meadowlawn Elementary School in Monticello, Indiana, in a training administered by White County Sheriff Department.

Union leaders say teachers and some cafeteria staff were brought into a room, asked to crouch down, then shot “execution style” with plastic pellets from a gun. The bullets resulted in welts and blood, and teachers outside the room reported hearing screams.

I had a few hours to think about it, and realized why I was so pissed off.

This active shooter training apparently put teachers in a passive role, to illustrate just how dangerous the situation can be. Putting them all in a room, and shooting point blank range is antithetical to giving teachers instruction on how to actively approach the situation.

Stop putting teachers in a passive role. Give us some figurative (and literal) ammunition to diffuse the situation.

Quit putting us in the sitting duck scenario. It’s demeaning, and in the end, useless to us, and our students.

I agree, Cheryl. What was the purpose of this training svenario? Name the school shooter, or any location shooter, that wasn’t a random spraying of shots. Taking a group to a separate area? No way that happens.
To answer my own question, I think the purpose of this scenario was to sow fear in teachers.
