We need to seriously think through our alliances and commitments. Good piece that documents how untrustworthy our European allies are:

I only read the title and didn’t bother with the rest. Posting eu as “friend of Russia” and especially with the pair on the picture means the author is either an outright liar or is living on only fake news.
Certainly a bottom line conclusion that they are no freiend to USA can still be correct for different reasons — and mostly is too, nation leaders are supposed to be friends for their own nation and use others only for advantage. If they are any good. (Again, the pictured couple is IMHO pretty far from that, but that is another story.)
I’ve never assumed the countries of Europe would stand beside us in any meaningful way if we started having serious problems with Russia or China, so this article was not a big shock to me. If the shoes are ever on the same feet as they were at the end of WWII, though, I think the US should be a lot less generous with rebuilding a devestated Europe.
I’m all for the countries of Europe building up their militaries… something that is long overdue.
They are all in the NATO, and unlike Trump, Biden will likely return to the ways to pay up the bill and let them coast, so why would they bother with armies? :-/
The only use the EU et al has for the USA is our foolish willingness to give them money.
The big issue is the EU is designed to allow the political elites who lean socialist/authoritarian to impose their will on the people of Europe. The propaganda in europe is as bad as in the US. Everyone is being trained to hate individuality and freedom and embrace socialism and deference to the state.
The people of the UK are the only ones who seem to be resisting at all and even then, not by much. (obviously a generalization).
fyi, I am in the UK.
Does the UK consider itself one of the EU?
no. we voted to leave the eu, even after our politicians tried to impose it on us without our consent.
I am curious about how long Britain can not only be independent of the EU but be able to develop commercial and diplomatic relationships that helps Britain to not need the EU.
Britain was the main if not a major trading partner of the United States (especially, I have read) the Southern states for a long time after the Revolution.
Those links were part of the cause of the War of 1812.
Full separation will happen. But under Boris Johnson? Under the Conservatives (never mind Labor)?
With Biden having already reestablished relations with and aid to the PLO? This action suggests where Biden will go with Britain.
You don’t just get out of bed and instantly banish your old lover. But any grown ass adult can still banish their old lover.
Is Britain a grown ass adult? That is the $64,000 Question.
TBH, i think the UK politicians are just like those in the US congress, some few are ok, but most would sell us out in a heartbeat, to any who would pay.
As we are (or maybe were) the fifth largest economy, we have some pull in the world, we just need to stand up for free speech and free markets, or we will fall like everyone else.
Well, Britain has got the resources to have Pull.
It has shown there are people who have the Will to use that Pull, and use it for enough of the right reasons.
So I see no reason to give up on either the US or the UK, yet.
Brtitons also have a history of being less polite to their leaders, elected or crowned, than many seem inclined to be today, so that hope is bolstered.
I believe we need to refresh and restore the English -speaking alliance. US, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand. I would add strong allies in key spots-Israel, India and Brazil come to mind. The organization would be a free trade zone and a military and cultural alliance.
I have heard this was a possibility before.
Hopefully it can be made so.
New Zealanders have to get rid of that Flake they have first, maybe.
And Australia has got a little too much Covid on its mind (I had no idea Covid-19 shared traits with Syphilis).
But where there is life there is Hope.
I left off Canada and Japan…but your observations about our brothers down under are spot on.
I think that would be nice. But I don’t see any of those particularly interested in such thing at the moment.
Except a woman who was arrested when 8 months along in her pregnancy for conspiring to violate Qurantine laws, and the people who saw the video of her being arrested.
That film made it all the way over to here in the United States.
The Wanker Constabulary have a LOT of egg on their face. That egg is curdling.
Yeah, that was pretty awful to watch. But it wasn’t the last of similar videos. And wasn’t she just writing some comments on FB?
Recently USA is no better, they arrested some bloke for posting memes back in 2016 and want to throw him in jail for 10 years for election interference. I wish it was s joke.
I am counting on Frustration and Festering Outrage to scare the politicians the way they scared the people feeling it.
You gotta be pretty Sheeply Sheeple to not want to get out and maybe even get back at at least one Wanker Constable.
The vaccines are multiplying, so the BS will have to end.
Also, I hear only reports of numbers, then reports of playing with the numbers. I don’t hear reports of people piling up corpses to burn, or any new Hampstead Heath’s undeveloped since the 17th Century Plague contaminates its soil.
Give it a little more time is all.
BTW, I really do prefer Hampstead Heath to either Central or Prospect Park.
There is a park in Dunfermline, Scotland that is just as nice, including a nice, deep, wild gorge.
And thank you again for the advice on the tea.
Did Brexit ever happen, or is it still on hold and being argued?
The UK parliament ratified the agreement in the last hours of the last year. The EU members allowed themselves some more time till end of Feb that might be extended, but porbably it remains just a formality. I didn’t hear anyone objecting even a comma.
Well, as I recall the thing the vote was on some interesting short claims that was revealed as pure lie right on the next day — and later no one bothered to offer a real vote on the actual realistic choices.
But that’s in the past, and the BS negotiations on the details too. If someone read the final result and understand it I’d be happy to read a summary, to me it looks like the Brits get exactly what they had in obligations just lost the representation. Not very clear what the upside is.
As I see it EU was actually designed for the opposite, the EU Parliament was never supposed to have any real power, and nations elected their waste politicians to go to that circus to not be in the way at home.
Unfortunately the design was not very strong and big movers arranged a different setup — i.e Soros bought up more than 30% of the EU reps and put them on work to create actual policy. And from there it is all obviously downhill.
I’m very sorry about UK leaving as they could have helped to push it backwards. The brexit slogan of “taking back the power” made perfect sense out of context — the part no one bothered to look was once taken back where that power will go. And as I see the folks at helm in the last many years, they don’t look any better than the rot on the other side — kinda across the board. (I liked the SNP guy, but that is a local-only power.)
Now pretty likely Boris will manage the un-united kingdom pretty soon, as both S and NI will want to split and go back the EU, and any argument he could have against it is easy to shoot down with his very own words form the brexit battle.
Sorry, but you have a profoundly distorted view of the EU. there is no mechanism to improve the EU, it was set up to ratchet the power away from the people and the nations and put it in the hands of people who are unelected.
The only way to improve the EU is to leave.
Nice example of arguing FROM conclusion. Most of the EC decisions require 80% majority or even 100%. That is a mechanism in itself — as long as the countries vote accordingly. And EC has actual power.
The EP is mostly just talks, but even there you could do some stuff lately is arranged majority vote.
As I remember UK was not really up to try any of those. It didn;t try and fail but started with throwing in the towel.
And it is not about one’s view but simple facts from history. If you can show up any actual fight please do.
Also you could explain us some points of grief UK was very laud about, like fisheries (where I agree it look pretty much nonsense), how come they signed on on those in the first place?
