You know what? I consider this to be one of my Social Media outlets, so I’m gonna share my thoughts on things that aren’t necessarily political. I love movies. Here’s a review…
My wife Eileen and I Finally got around to watching The GUARDIANS (the Russian superhero film). The characters are fairly stock (the Melancholy Loner, the Beautiful Amnesiac, the Tortured Man-Beast-complete with unrequited love for the Amnesiac, and the Tragic Badass.
The SFX were weak, the plot was lame, the score was completely forgettable, and the script was insipid. But what this flick lacked in good filmmaking, it made up for in sheer enthusiasm. They were trying to make The AVENGERS, with about ten percent of the talent and budget.
As bad as this thing was, I could, and probably will, sit thru it again. It’s just so delightfully earnest. Plus, Russian actresses are smokin’ hot.
I’m not gonna say that it was a good movie, but I had a good time. 4/10

I watch movies all the time to notice how they made it, and what they did with the budget they had (one of the all-time best low-budget movies is Primer ($7,000 cost!) — but it will break your brain). Rian Johnson, director of Looper, said that Primer was the best time travel movie ever made.
I watched a lot of Disney flicks through the 90s because I was interested in the CGI algorithms they were learning, not that I could get any understanding from my wife (“Hey! Look, honey, they figured out how to do physics-interactive fur simulation!” or “Wow! They finally took refraction into effect underwater!”).
Sounds like The Guardians might be worth a look.
My wife and I both enjoyed it. It’s worth 90 minutes of your time.
OK, on your advice, I watched “Guardians”. You’re right, it’s not a particularly good movie, but it was fun, and I didn’t feel like I had wasted a hour and a half of my life when it was over. I realize what faint praise it is, when say it is arguably better than some recent, Hollywood “blockbusters”. If the sequel suggested in the after-credits scene materializes, I’ll probably watch it, too.
“Fun” has become an underrated quality for movies, I think. There’s a definite tendency for them to be either too serious or else just lazy.
The problem with Hollywood is that they’re too self-important to have fun.
I’m on board for a Guardians 2. I just hope they keep it cheesy.
That kind of bad film can be a lot of fun–where the actors seem actually invested in what they’re doing instead of just reading lines for a paycheck.
To be fair, some of the lines sounded like they came from the narration of a bad video game…
Yeah, I know. But, I’m unabashed in my love for this piece of cheese.
That’s it exactly everyone onscreen really seemed to be trying to make a good movie, but…
More Bud & Eileen movie reviews, please.
Okie doke.
I’m a huge movie buff, and I drag my Sweetie to the flicks all the time. As with you and your lovely bride, I like holding Eileen’s hand in the dark.
As we watch ’em, I’ll write about ’em. Watch this space.
